Once in a while a truly incredible being is lost. The story of Ruffian is one of the most powerful I've ever heard. To never be behind in any race she ever offered, is testament to unmatched greatness. An undeniable sense for besting every horse with swag must have been a common place. Always will you be remembered, your story Ruffian, is one I'll appreciate always and never forget. Rest easy girl, you set the bar.

Is Ruffian the greatest Female Racehorse of all Time ?

Among American female racehorses, arguably yes. For sheer talent, Ruffian probably was the greatest. For greatest achievement I personally would go with Zenyatta (whom I was less a fan of than I was of Ruffian) because Zenyatta won twice as many races, raced over a longer period of time, and most importantly won (once) in open company, against older males, meaning horses 4 years old or older. Three-year-old Thoroughbreds are still developing, and all things equal, not at the peak of their powers. Zenyatta raced against stronger competition than Ruffian, overall. Ruffian, through no fault of her own, never beat -- did not live to beat -- males, or older females. I think she would have beaten Foolish Pleasure in the match race. However, that is an opinion. No one can know for sure. It is not unreasonable to rank Ruffian over Zenyatta, just as it is not unreasonable to rank Man o'War over Secretariat (or vice versa). But I do not rank EITHER Ruffian or Zenyatta as high as Australia's Winx (43: 37-3-0) who retired in 2019. Like many non-American mares, Winx spent much (most, in Winx's case) of her career racing the best males in her country. Also definitely in the running for greatest female racehorse of all time would be the undefeated 19th century Hungarian mare Kincsem (54:54-0-0) who won major stakes against males in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germany, France and England. I'm tempted as well to rank, in no particular order, European mares Goldikova, Treve, Enable and Miesque, and undefeated Australian sprinter Black Caviar, over any of the American dirt mares. It is easier, though, for fillies/mares to compete against males on grass than on dirt.

@@spaz5138 both great great horses!!! Ruffian showed she couldn’t be caught and Zenyatta showed she could run anyone down, so who knows for sure who would win? I’d hate to see either one lose!!! I have to throw Winx into the hat one this one too

I love this horse but she wasn't a great horse really. Her pedigree was horrible! Her Dams Sire broke down 3 times in his race career and broke down a 4th which killed him in retirement. Her Dam broke both legs and had to be put down just like Ruffian did. Sure she was good at racing while it lasted but realistically it was only a matter of time before she would end up like the rest of her pedigree. Some say she could have beaten secretariat when realistically she couldn't.. She couldn't beat Foolish Pleasure. She never faced good horses until the match race with Foolish Pleasure. Her racing style was always be in front which only had it harder on herself.
