Thank you She broke her right foreleg in a match race aganist Foolish Pleasure on July 6, 1975. She spent 12 hours in surgery needing to be revived twice. While breaking up from the surgery she thrashed around breaking the cast and hurting her leg even more. She could not go though another surgery. She was euthanized on July 7, 1975 at 2:20 am. She was buried under the flag pole at Belmont Park with her nose facing the finsh line. Your english is really good.

Why did she have to go so young? She was destine for greatness. She was so fast and powerful like a mustang on the highway. I gave her a nickname," Black Blur"! She was by far the greatest filly of her time and could've been of all time. She's the only filly that I've ever seen in my life that could keep that kind of speed for such a long distance.She would've been Horse Of The Year and would've been put in the Hall Of Horses!:( :(

The tragedy is they didn't check that the both the broodmare and sire were healthy and had no issues with their bones. If they had done, they had found that not only did Ruffian's parents but grandparents both had limb break downs leading to offspring being at risk of having softer bones. Weak bones combined with an extremely intensive exercise regime too young, early breaking, weight carrying before the bones are hardened at 3-5 years of age. The problem with fillies is their bones are not hardened yet, leading to a chronic lameness by the time the horse is 10 years old.

Oh I think her trainer new that and did his home work.. is why he was careful to pick the races and spread out her races ... She had the best trainer out there who actually cared about her and her well being .. She should of never run that race and he new it, but when owners and that bs media outlets and need to save racing crap put the pressure on him to race her.. Probably genetics played its part but people will never get over her passing ever..

We have to be reminded that the best tech and medicines were not as good as what is available now. I know what you mean about her bloodline having dangerous leg issues BUT even without the match race she likely would have broken down as a 3 yr old. Some race or training breeze it was inevitable. I wonder what has become of that bloodline today?Have breeders avoided continuing the chancy blood? I wish I knew.

She broke her leg during a match race with Foolish Pleasure the 3 year old Derby winner in 1975. They took her in for an extensive surgery. As she was coming out of anesthesia, she began thrashing around breaking her elbow and slipping the cast re-injuring the broken leg. She was euthanized and is buried at her home track, Belmont Park, with her nose pointed towards the finish line. ESPN has a great movie about Ruffian's life. It is a bit graphic.
