This, along with Elton John's "So Sad the Renegade," were written for Gus Van Sant's version of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - before he turned the film over to Ang Lee. I wish Van Sant's vision could have happened, though we do have a masterpiece with Lee.

Thanks for this info! I just watched My Own Private Idaho, and was reminded of Gus Van Sant's unique way to telling a story. If only Brokeback mountain HAD been done my Gus Van Sant! // I really was turned-off, actually, by the Ang Lee film. It was sickeningly apologetic, and relied on presenting the secret-love cowboys as victims, and also as complete caricatures of "masculine" men who just "happed" to be totally gay. It's sort of one of those films that was obviously made for an American audience only. I think Van Sant would have taken a much more "realistic" approach. Which would have not made the film the incredible success that it was with Ang Lee. Christ, I'd like to share with you my restoration of a live Rufus Wainwright recording of "Instead of the Dead." I'm am a musical synesthete, and I use a lot of Rufus Wainwright examples when talking about the meaning of "essence" of the different keys.
