So here I take an absolutely classic chord progression-the first 8 bars from "Autumn Leaves" and show you multiple ways to approach soloing over this chord sequence...
IMPORTANT! It's basically an A A B A form except that the last 8 measures do not repeat the first 8. It might -to be SUPER accurate be better to call it A A B C! The chord progression and melody of the C section are both different from the first A if you check out a lead sheet...

Rufus, really great video… I love the chord subs your using. Can you take this lesson to the next level with more articulation and jazz language tutorials using Autumn Leaves?? And creating tension and resolution in your lines?? And the use of space and pacing?? I feel like I’m getting the “harmonic information” but looking for the “storytelling” component of improvising Thanks man, always a pleasure to listen to you

You rock! Now the way you explain it someone has to go and get the information they don't understand before they can fully appreciate everything you are doing. So congrats on teaching at a high level and inspiring students and fellow bass players to learn!

Very valuable information Rufus. Thanks for that. There's so many substitutions you can apply in a chord progression that people often think that almost anything can be played over a jazz standard. The same tune can be played endlessly using substitutions and using different scales/modes. With this video we have a lot to work on. Time to dive into this. Thanks again. These kind of videos are very appreciated.

Hi Rufus,i have a Question,the first chord is Cm7 use C dorian,but im like use the C melodic minor? This is good or bad?
@rufusbass
@rufusbass 10 ай бұрын
There's lots of great solo lines where a player is using that melodic minor over a min 7th-as long as you set up that tension and play in and out of that in a musical way - however, dorian contains no 'avoid' notes per se, over. min 7th, but ...the major 7th in the melodic minor is a great sound too!

Great stuff, thnx! One question: I don't get why you substitute B7 for F7, and use the B Lydian dominant scale. This scale is derived from F# melodic minor, so you can use the F altered scale on F7 wich is also derived from F# melodic minor. Same notes, right?
@rufusbass
@rufusbass 2 жыл бұрын
Well, they are the SAME notes. Derived from the same. parent scale. F#melodic minor. So use whatever you want. You could use A Lydian Augmented too etc etc. B Lydian Dominant fits under the hands easily. Most people have difficulty playing the altered scale fluently , whereas Lydian Dominant is generally easier to conceive and visualize ...PLUS B7#11 and its relevant chord scale can be seen as the tritone Sub of an F7alt so works well in terms of root movement. I think that makes it clear.

Hey Rufus, I gave a question please: your moon basses - that I see you play a lot - are they that good? You Always sound good but I know if you had string on a broom it would still blow us away…lol The ones I see advertisements for are all heavyweights over 9 lbs. Also, what strings and gauges do you use on them please 😬 - ? I have a few basses I need to let go of but thinking of getting one just based on your great vids! Thanks, -M

Hey M! Okay so...those are Moollon basses -the red one, and white 5 string I also use...And then I also have some videos with a very nice surf green Xotic passive J bass -a prototype... I like both! The Moollons are very good- a LONG wait now to order one and get it, so maybe look for a used one? Strings: la Bella Nickel round wound Rx..45-100

@@rufusbass Thank you so much! Your musicianship is off the charts and coupled with that finger sound!..wow - I like the “old strings” sound of the green bass. So great. Are they heavy basses? I’m looking on eBay reverb and talk bass…lol It also looks like you could blow on those strings and they’d be on the fret :-) great action I presume… Thank you and please keep posting 🙏🙏🙏 Martin T
