Hi Vicki, do you have a source for the dates? We'd be happy to update the description box with new information. I believe Staci mentioned 1809 because that is when our founding families arrived in Tyrconnell, Dunwich Township. Thanks!

hi. when the British in India growing hemp, the hemp was used for exporting whatever the Brits/Indians wanted. when the hemp, losely woven into large bags. apparently the bags were used by sailors and they used it to hook rope through the burlap/hemp bags to get a better fabric grip on ropes.when the sailors had to grip other rope on sails etc. so, the sailors were, legend says, were north eastern American sailors and the rug hooking started hooking there. I have read that the hemp/bag/export stuff all occured about 1840's. before then, before the losely woven hemp/burlap bags were available for a hooking base fabric, American women were using a slightly less tightly woven linen or cotton (not frequently the cotton) and hand sewed their patterns with yarn with elevated stitches. this was popular in the Colonial time. I believe the Brits also were doing the same craft. most of these sewn pieces were called "rugs" and were used as bed spreads. hence the phrase "snug as a bug in a rug" I acquired this knowledge because I enjoy textile crafts and been rug hooking, embroidery, commercial hand and machine knitting most of my life. thank you for letting me share some of this stuff!!! the rugs I hook are never allowed to be walked on!!! I use them as wall hangings. I use primarily recycled wool strips from thrift shop garments
