For those that may not know about it - the England Italy game involved Italy utilising a loophole in the rules that states there is no offside line at a tackle, the offside line is only present if a ruck is formed - so if Italy never actually put a man in to contest the ball it would always just be a tackle and thus they could come around the sides. Well that's how the laws used to be anyway. If ii remember right, World Rugby changed the laws so that a ruck was formed regardless of whether or not a defender tried to contest the ball or not. The loophole, though a clever understanding of the laws by Italy, was deemed to be cynical and not good for the game. It was fascinating to watch, but I agree if it was allowed to continue then it would make for very uninteresting games going forward.

Yeah it felt like Poite relished in this loophole with his refereeing. Some refs - Owens included - facilitated games of rugby to play smoothly. Others - Poite in particular - wanted a spotlight on them

I don't agree, before this match the loophole was used occasionally on all levels without a lot of issues. To use it as an approach to a whole match like the Italians did isn't viable because the tactic is extremely easy to counter if you know it's coming. This only worked because English players are notoriously bad at reacting to what's in front of them. Closing the loophole actually lead to the game closing up because of the dominance of the 13 man defensive line. I still think the game would be more attractive if the reversed that ruling

Absolute joke that first half. England were the second best team in the world at the time so most teams would have struggled coming up against a side doing it every ruck, the ref ruined it and should have taken a common sense approach to the game and not let it become a farcical first 40 mins of rugby which it was

Got to love players, like Peter Stringer here, who show they know the rules inside and out. He knew that play is live the second the kicker starts their movement, taking full advantage even from 20-30 yards away.

I remember watching the Eng-Ita game in a pub. As there always is, a know it all at the bar saying "offside... this ref's a moron" My dad. Who knew the laws was trying to explain it to this guy. But it was like trying to explain taxes to a chihuahua. His team used a similar tactic sporadically when he played in the 80's to great effect.. Mind you, like the Italy coach, you have to brief the ref before the game to let them know what's happening. As I remember, the first half was close because England didn't have a clue what was happening, then in the second half they cracked it.

Yes the Italian specifically asked before the game. That's why they weren't going for the ball, because the ref told them that in that case he would have called ruck.

As an Englishman, I was rather embarrassed watching the players asking the ref what they were supposed to do during that game. It’s on the players to know the rules and it was certainly not for the ref to educate them (which he rightfully didn’t).

@@Heathen.Deity. They asked him because he wasn't handling the rucks properly, even taking into account the loophole. They wanted some clarification on how he was judging it because his rulings weren't making any sense.

Are you Surprised? the fucking ref didn't have a clue what he was doing. It was a clever tacktic but Poite bought into it so much that he was ignoring clearly formed rucks and saying they where only tackles. As an example at 5:52 when cole drives on Parrise engages with first Itoje and then Launchbury (forming a Ruck if you can't keep up) and the idiot is stood waving his arms about saying tackle tackle... Haskell has explained in a Podcast that they Spent an entire day in the lead up with Poite (this is normal) and he totally changed what he was expecting in terms of the picture he wanted to see. In every other international game when the Captain askes for clarification over a Law they get a detailed explaination, but Poite waved them away. the law got changed not because of Italy's tactic but Poite's utter refusal to ref the laws correctly.

While Italy were incredibly smart to exploit the loophole around tackles and rucks, you can see why the powers-that-be ultimately changed it. The law stated that the offside line only appeared once a ruck was formed. You can see in the clip beginning at around 5:12 that two tackles resulted in rucks and Italy were still allowed to roam offside. 12 joins in the first one and the 9 joins in the second one. They're only brief but that do become rucks with the addition of an opposing player. Poite was wildly inconsistent with the application of the law, to the point that Haskell and Hartley tried to get clarification, only to get some sarcastic non-comment back. If that began to happen every match, the whole game would have descended into farce. And it didn't work anyway because Italy still lost.

Italy were playing some good rugby there. I am glad to an improvement in their play, it bodes well for European Rugby. Go Bokke!

4:17 TMO gets the decision wrong I think. A quick throw can only be taken in the field of play. The quick throw was taken in goal which is not the field of play. Under the advantage laws you cannot play advantage for an incorrectly taken quick throw.

The funny part of this was that the English players didn't know how to react. Haskell asking the ref "what do we need to do for it to be a ruck" and Poite replying "I'm the referee, I'm not the coach".
