Behind the scenes its well known that Brussouw was physically the strongest of them all ,him and his dad were in the housebuilding trade,laying bricks,hauling wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of concrete,go check that england or lions game when he just picks the guy up like haybale and throws him to the side

Ironically kick and chase rugby is NOT traditional South African rugby. It is in fact traditionally just associated with Bulls/Northern Transvaal rugby. The other teams in South Africa, especially Western Province and Natal, and later the Lions, were more attacking and expansive playing teams (although this changed and waxed and waned as the years went on). But Matfield implying South Africa's traditional approach was the kick and defend type of rugby, is completely wrong. However from his point of view, being an ex Blue Bulls player, it is not difficult to understand why he thinks it is traditional. Coaches like Nick Mallet clearly showed that South Africa could successfully play attacking rugby, even going on to 17 straight test victories. Ironically, his teams were stacked with Western Province and Natal players, at the time. Which were also the more expansive and attacking teams in the country at the time. But this idea of South Africa being a boring kick and chase and defend team, is mostly due to the dominance of the ideology permeated by coaches who bought into the blue bulls model in the country.
