Im planning on buying a Ruger SFAR for a shit hits the fan type of stuff as well as just having fun shooting. I was thinking about getting a 1-8x vortex scope on it and canted iron sights but I'm wondering if it would be wiser to go 3-12x or higher? Anyone planning to buy this rifle, I would recommend buying a spare bolt head. Granted the average recreational shooter won't rack up a high enough round count to break the bolt head, but look how thin the bolt head is where the lugs are. I saw a 7.62x39 AR rifle that uses an AR-15 BCG with the thin bolt head and they were known to crack within 1500 to 2000 rounds. The 7.62x51 ammo is quite expensive, so I doubt most buyers will shoot more than a few hundred in their lives.
@rogermac3582 жыл бұрын
Pause the video at 4:49 and take a really good look at the bolt head. While the outer wall is thinner, the locking lugs are massive compared to the 5.56 bolt and extend past the bolt head recess. Given Ruger's propensity to over engineer things, I'm not sure that's as much of a concern as everyone is making it out to be. Time will tell...

I'm amazed Ruger was able to build such a light weight AR rifle! But my first thought was: I bet it kicks like an angry horse!
@GeorgiaBoy19612 жыл бұрын
The four-position gas port is the answer to that, as well as the double-baffle muzzle brake. "0" is completely closed on the gas system, "3" is fully-open. Once the rifle is broken in, you'll be able to dial it down to "2" - which is the setting Ruger recommends for routine use. Recoil is probably stiff with position 3, but probably not as bad on setting two. If recoil is an issue, wait for the 20-inch barrel model, which should be more-pleasant to use.

@drdrake632 жыл бұрын
I’m not assuming that it will. There’s different metallurgy involved in the Ruger variant and I’m sure it’s been extensively tested. We will see though
@JR15A22 жыл бұрын
@@drdrake63 I'm just thinking about the fact that they're basically trying to do the same thing as fitting the 7.62x39 into an AR-15, except with an even bigger and more powerful cartridge. The 7.62x39 ARs are known for broken bolt lugs due to having a lot more metal removed from the bolt face to accept the more significant case diameter. And that carrier key being held on with only one bolt seems like it would be prone to coming loose or shearing off a lot easier than a traditional 2 bolt design. Most people who buy an entry-level .308 AR won't be putting thousands of rounds through them, especially with today's ammo prices, so who knows. I would still pick an M&P 10 over one of these if it were me. Just my opinion.

@@JR15A2 I haven’t seen the Ruger yet in person, but it reminds me a lot of my DPSM G-2 in .308. Several 16” 308s on the market in the lightweight category. The sig cross comes to mind. I remember when I bought my Remington 700 sps tactical with a 20” “short” barrel haha… anyway, the only chrono data I’ve seen shows about 150 fps less from 16-20” (obviously load dependent) and I think the intended use determines whether that matters. Not gonna shoot over 300 yards? You won’t notice the difference much. Also, the 16” is potentially better for those with suppressors.
