This video shows complete (except rear sight, front sight) disassembly of the Ruger SR 22 pistol. Here I disassemble the magazine, slide, and frame completely. I try to cover as many proper part names as I can, but you should always refer to manufacturer's manuals for this information.
Important note: The pistol will need to be sighted in after slide disassembly as part of complete disassembly requires rear sight removal.
Reassembly Part 1: • Ruger SR 22 Reassembly...
Reassembly Part 2: • Ruger SR 22 Reassembly...
When disassembling your pistol, you are doing this at your own risk, and I cannot be held responsible for any harm you case by or after performing these actions.

Taking it apart after watching this great video wasn't nearly as bad as it looked. I've done the slide and removed the lower assembly but never completely disassembled it. It needed a deep clean. The real test was reassembling it and making sure it works. Success!

I'm getting ready to replace the firing pin in mine (Ruger is sending me a new one, since mine broke.) and this video was the one thing that made me decide to do it myself, rather than send the pistol in for repair. At 75 I have done a fair amount of disassembly for various firearms, this one is full of tricky little parts and springs. Unless there is a need to replace a part deep in the trigger group I see no need to perform this deep of a disassembly merely for cleaning. I would resort to good solvents as a soak, then an ultrasonic cleaning followed by vigorous air blow out and flood with a water displacing solvent. Blow out again and even let it air dry or use a blow dryer for a while, then lightly oil the mechanism, blow off the sear and hammer engagement area and apply a good grease there as well as generally blow off the excess oil you applied, just leave a light film. It is easy to get into trouble, invite complications with this deep take down. It is interesting, in this video I see the barrel retainer bolt is a Torx, I have watched other videos where they want to polish or smooth the feed ramp and throat, the majority of comments have said just use a ball head allen driver, to remove the barrel with the trigger group left in frame, which could end up buggering up the Torx or rounding the allen wrench head. Or maybe the fastener is now an allen head??

Thanks for this great video. I have done this disassembly a couple of times. First time was tricky, second time was much easier. One thing that happened to me, though - as I was tightening the shorter of the 2 Philips screws that hold the side plate on, the head broke off, leaving the rest of the screw in the receiver. I'm sure it was a defective screw because I hadn't tightened it much at all when it broke. With a drill press, some small bits and a screw extractor, I was able to get it out without any damage. The hole is a 4-40 thread, so I went to the hardware store and was able to find a perfect match in stainless steel. I just had to shorten it a little. I may call Ruger to see if they will send me the factory screw, but it's really not necessary.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 9 жыл бұрын
***** Thank you for watching the video. Sounds like that screw was bad to begin with, like you said. Good to know you could easily find a replacement. You never know how Ruger would respond since they don't advise people to go to that level of disassembly. They may simply say it was your fault and they will not send anything.

While I cannot advocate magazine safety removal, and legally it shouldn't be done, yes, it seems removing the magazine disconnect and it's spring would disable the magazine disconnect safety.

01/01/2019..Hi all...I recently had a issue with my sr22 ...the screw that holds down the rear sight came loose and i lost it while shooting ..local gun shop had a screw and spring that fit. (ruger parts) The screw was NOT the correct screw but worked, it was too long ...when screwed in ..it physically ,mechanically locked the firing pin from operating. I learned this the hard way after trying to shoot the firearm and it would not fire ! The sight elevation screw hole is NOT a blind hole..it is drilled and threaded straight thru slide and you can bottom out the screw against the firing pin. Correct parts# for screw VS08010..spring # AX05906

Perfect video. We'll done. Other than to replace/repair a part deep inside the action, when would you take apart this firearm like this? Is there a number of shots, or a "symptom" You will see when using this pistol?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 28 күн бұрын
There is not reason to take the pistol apart to that level unless it needs replacement of parts or if it has been subjected to a lot of debris (sand for example). As for issues or problems, it is a little picky with ammo. Never had issue with 40 grain CCI rounds. Can get ejection issues with some other weights and brands.

I just purchased the SR22 to practice my DA instead of buying a .22LR revolver. All of my .22LR pistols are target pistols and don't have a hammer. I find the DA/SA on SR22 is exceptional and a excellent value priced .22LR pistol. I was considering the Walther P22 1st gen but was turned off by the negative reviews, the 2nd gen P22 produced to correct the deficiencies that gen 1 exhibited namely FTF and FTE. The SR22 looks quite like the P22.

This sight is adjustable for windage i believe. There should be a screw slot on the right side of the rear sight blade if I remember correctly. The screw that sits vertically is the elevation screw. You don't need to move the sight base, just that sight blade using a screw on the side. But if the base is not perfectly in the center and you want to nudge it over to center just drift the sight base back to center.

If you take the magazine disconnect and spring , will they still function? What is the draw back?
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 8 жыл бұрын
+cmichael2005 The draw back is that you deactivate one of the safeties. That should be the only effect of removing the plunger and spring. Technically, the pistol should function without them as if they were never there, but again, you lose one of the safeties.

You should do the walther p22. And tell me what ya think may be done to it as far as it's unreliable function. For me the company says to use hi velocity ammo. Yet it doesn't change the fact that it's function still stinks. Where as my sig, ruger and s&w run through anything i put in them.

It looks like the magazine disconnect is necessary to have for the trigger bar to function properly.
@MosinVirus
@MosinVirus 10 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so. The trigger bar functions correctly without the disconnect. The disconnect simply pushes the trigger bar down and disengages it. If you push up on the disconnect with anything (small punch, etc.) the trigger bar will immediately engage and work as it should if there was no disconnect. There is a plunger there pushing it up into engagement if I remember correctly. The disconnect simply applies enough downward pressure to disengage the bar.

It has been a while since I owned this pistol but I believe there was something that was under the rear sight. I just can't remember if that something had to come out to change the sight, or if the sight had to be removed to take that something out.

Are you looking for disassembly video or something that talks about improving reliability. The only issues we have experienced with .22lr firearms were relate to them getting super dirty or when using lower quality/power ammo. Basically the gun would not always cycle.
@19stump65
@19stump65 6 жыл бұрын
MosinVirus yes i am aware of reliability and a dirty firearm. The p22 however is of no greater use with a thorough cleaning and wet runnning. Also i have just found the schematics for it so i should be good. I've had it a few yrs i just haven't got serious about fixing it until recently. Ten minutes after i sent you the message i did find a couple of fixes on another channel. One being a gunsmith. So feeling good as i feel my problem is the same as that video. So yes i should be good and i will keep your sr22 video as it will be helpful im sure the lady also has it as well. Thank you for the reply

Take out the part and spring i show at 22:29 of the video. The trigger bar is supposed to be pushed up toward the hammer. That is why you saw a long spring and plunger at the rear of the receiver block when I took it out of the polymer frame shell. The magazine disconnect and its spring, push the trigger bar down when the magazine is not inserted. When the magazine is inserted, the magazine holds the Magazine Disconnect part up and off the trigger bar. When you remove the part shown at the time above (22:29), the part that pushes the trigger bar down (thereby disconnecting it from hammer/sear) is gone and the gun will function as designed without the magazine disconnect safety.
