This is exactly what I’ve been thinking all along. The old Tiguan, especially the R version in all black, looked fantastic-almost a rival to the BMW X5. VW did something similar with the Passat, too; the previous versions were much more attractive than the latest models. It feels like VW is losing its way, trying too hard but missing what people really want. Just focus on designing beautiful, high-quality cars, and they’ll sell. Instead, the new ID lineup looks awkward, with technology lagging behind. No wonder they’re having to shut down production facilities in Germany. Well done, VW-keep pushing customers away with these missteps.

I read a story somewhere that MB designers used to prep two clay mock-ups for their execs. One was a more futuristic model, 2 generations down the line - revealed first to show the execs where the design logic was going, and probably to soften up the old goats. And they then revealed the next gen model that needed sign-off. It was then easier to visualize the link from past to future, and also to introduce step-change designs. I think this new design has lost a lot of the evolutionary Tiguan design elements that were classic VW. Maybe it's setting the new brand ID for the rest of the range to follow, but sadly, it's lost a lot a balance and proportion in the design.

I disagree with Bembli. First, the model being shown is the R Line, which is supposed to be very aggressive. The everyday Tiguan should be more toned down. I think Volkswagen's current design is very dated and this refresh is welcome. It looks more premium compared to the outgoing model and that's great. It stands out from the competition by seemingly being a more upscale SUV, which I think will do well. The real question is whether or not the MPG will be competitive.

It’s sad to see the identity crisis Volkswagen has been going through. The company that had a clear design ethos of having no unnecessary lines has now become practically indistinguishable from Toyota. Even their ID Buzz-clearly meant to fill the Beetle’s role as their attention-grabbing statement-making nod to their automotive heritage-has unnecessary and dishonest design details like the pointless fake vents near the back. People are still driving the old Bus today, 60 years later. Can you picture people driving the new ID Buzz in 60 years? With its plastic interior and flimsy fold down tables that won’t last a week around a family with young kids?

@krane15Ай бұрын
First, keep in mind that this is the R-Line design. VW also builds two lower models that have different front and rear-ends. The rear-end simply balances the front. Second, all carmakers are redefining their identity due to electrification. So it true, they are in flux. Keep in mind that what well so well for them before during the ICE age, won't necessarily work for an EV. Remember, EV are government mandates, so its less the carmaker, and more Big Brother forces these changes upon all of us. Anyway, its not Korean, but Chinese. The Tiguan (formally Tayron) was designed for the Chinese market. BTW, if you feel VW has a gaping maw, what do you think of Lexus or Genesis, or Infinity? Three luxury models with huge grills. Not to mention the grill on its biggest competitor, the RAV4.
