Ruins of the Gold Coast, Long Island

We will travel to two former estates on the Gold Coast in Long Island - one in Welwyn Preserve and the other in Muttontown Preserve, along the way making a small stop at Glen Cove.

I know that in the 80s and 90s (at least) it was done for a variety of reason like self-expression, a form of rebellion against society and norm, as well as recognition by others doing similar things, however I believe there are many things those doing it do not take into consideration and I will address this in a future video at some point 😊

You'd do well and add to your content with a little study on "normal things" found at these older estates. Formal gardens with walled off yards for privacy and to keep out certain animals were common, as well as those various outbuildings with massive heating plants (boilers, not furnaces) to warm the greenhouses in cold weather. (massive pipes shown in the greenhouse) It was also common to heat the ground for outdoor growing, tennis courts, and even sidewalks to prevent snow / ice in the winter. Fuel was cheap, automated systems were new and a novelty item in that era plus moving it all away from the house made it seamless to the owner, who didn't really want to know how it worked or see the hired hands making it all happen. They just looked out the window and enjoyed what they saw. Heck, most of these people didn't even know how much money they had or exactly where it was spent. Usually it was "old money" from prior generations, and they had someone else handle all of those details. It was also a time when most homes in the USA did NOT have running water, indoor plumbing, or electricity. Everything here is new and modern!

Thank you for adding some valuable information!! I sometimes do not want to mention certain things because I am not confident enough in some of the information that I do have, for instance in this particular mansion (or even other ones in Long Island) what exactly was heated and not - of course the greenhouse but like you mentioned sidewalks, tennis courts and so on, therefore to stay on the side of caution and try to be accurate I generally avoid mentioning it. There are some mansions I am more familiar with like the Carnegie Mansion (which hopefully one day I will do a video on) and there I can be more technical but with other mansions, like this one, my knowledge is not as extensive. Therefore I appreciate your input and shedding more light on the topic, as these additions make the channel even better for all the viewers 😊 But I love the fact that you said that many of these people did not know how much money they had or where it was spent - hence why the Great Depression of 1929 caught them so off guard even though the signs of a recession were visible for many months.

@@NYTrek85 BTW, I know very little of this particular property, but I have been in enough older home to recognize these things when I see them and know why they are there. Another thing is that the real history is in the areas that have NOT been renovated. (generally not open to the public either) If you get a chance, go into basements and attics, open closet doors and check back pantries, garages, etc. This is where you will find original light fixtures, bathrooms (for the help) storage of unused items, coal bins, 100+ year old heating systems, original wiring, and early woodwork / trim. You may even find some items placed in storage from a prior renovation. Kinda like your own "American Pickers" expedition. If you don't know what you are looking at, try a little research then add subtitles or edit in a voiceover. Most viewers would love that.

I am just like you, those are the spots! I was never interested in something that was renovated in the 1980s or 90s, I want the original stuff and something that has not been seen in years. Unfortunately, like you mentioned, many of these places are closed to general public and being a professor I feel like I need to set an example and follow certain rules even on youtube therefore I always ask for permission and/or permits if I will post it on youtube. Last week I got a green light and filmed a place I will show this Sunday and I am in the process of getting permission in 2 other places therefore I promise I will make every attempt to film and talk about the “good stuff” but in some cases that might not be possible. However as the channel grows I might be able to make things happen once in a while😊

You can always take them apart into sections and be much easier to handle for few extra bucks all you really sacrifice is messing your pants and shirt, scratching your truck/car, and a next day lower back pain which in some cases might require a chiropractor visit, but hey, you have the extra cash from the scrap yard to just cover the doctor’s co-payment and a bottle of advil. 🤣

@NYTrek85 sounds great! I hope I get home soon , it's been 5 years this August . I've missed being there every single day. I heard you say in this video that you made a video of Caumsett , I love Caumsett. I used to go there all the time, and I swam in the water too. I miss swimming in the LI Sound. Duke was the name of the manager there, he was the sweetest man, he always calledcme Pretty Lady...sadly he died in 2007. I liked Target Reserve, I think that's its name, it's down the road from Caumsett. If you're Catholic, out in Manorville there is the Lady of the Island Shrine, if you never went there it's lovely and peaceful, it has the depiction of the 12 Stations of the Cross, it has 2 small chapels, a gift shop and a little place that sells food and beverages, there's an outdoor area with tables you can sit at, it's lovely there, especially when the trees are flowering. There's an outdoor area with a modern looking statue of the Blessed Mother and benches are there.

I love people's personal stories and memories as not only is it interesting but also better shapes my knowledge and connection to all these locations...I did Caumsett State Park in one of my earlier videos when I was still learning how to edit and navigate this youtube world, therefore at some point I will probably return to the area to do more walking and filming. And in Manorville I know exactly the location you mentioned, it is beautiful and I certainly will do a video in Manorville at one point or another 😊

Yes, there are pictures in numerous locations, for example there are few in the Library of Congress Digital Collections. There are some organizations with photos in their archives like: Preservation Long Island - who have a digital collection where some mansions can be seen, as well as numerous photographs in private archives. There are also some books like: Long Island's Gold Coast by Paul J. Mateyunas. Although on this channel I am limited to showing images that are free from copyright laws. 😊

If I did pronounced it with “h” its my mistake, in fact eventually I will do an extra video on this channel to explain the process of creating the content and why sometimes these slip-ups might occur but hopefully as I get more settled in this youtube world I will keep them to a minimum. Then again, I believe I was teaching the French Revolution at the time so maybe I was just rebellious towards words with French origins 😂 And the music, well, it will be a hit and miss as no one has the same taste, but creating a video every week I like to experiment with different genres and see what works and what doesn’t….it’s a lot of trial and error but hopefully I will be able to provide some interesting stuff that you enjoy.👍

Interesting video! I grew up in Glen Cove back in the 1980’s and loved hearing about its old glory days. My mom used to take me to the Winfield Mansion (or Woolworth Estate as I knew it) back when she worked at Pall Corporation, who leased the property back then. Since I’d be there after hours, I had a great time exploring and imagining what it would have been like to live there in its heyday. I still love these old places and my old home town. ❤
