This movie explains puberty for girls so well. Its so creative to choose a panda as a code for periods/puberty. You get hairy (like a panda) , you bleed (red). You have mood swings like anger (like an animal), your sweat smells different (smelly like a panda), its just so creative. Well done pixar.

Well, we DID have Mulan's Mom and Sleeping Beauty's Mom and Noni as a Mom-type figure for Lilo who were positive mother roles. Wendy being a mother to the Lost Boys, as well. Moana and her Mom....while they have very little interaction in the movie, what they do have shows a beautiful bond between them. When she tells Moana why her father fears the sea and when she HELPS her daughter pack for her journey to heal the ocean.

@@CeltycSparrow but not every mother-daughter relationship is as smooth as those. They can be messy and just as complex as a relationship between a child and its father. That's the point. A lot of people get their periods even earlier than 13, as well. It's great to educate your children early anyways about puberty rather than wait last minute or until the bleeding starts. Imagine you don't talk to your child assuming they start at 13-14 and suddenly at age 9 or 10 they start their menstrual cycle. It would be traumatic! Growing up, the only reason I knew it was coming was because my school educated us really early (elementary school grade 3) and my older sister's experience helped prepare me, as well. I think the backlash Red Panda got was ridiculous. We can't and shouldn't shield our children from the real world.

The reason why her mom's red panda was the largest was probably due to the stress she had growing up, being the perfect daughter to her mother, the perfect mother to Mei Mei, and the perfect woman to others around her. She needed to give what others wanted instead of what she wanted for herself. But in doing so, caused her panda to go out of control. The way I see it: the panda is a mental picture of what we are on the inside. If we focus more on how other people see us, we become dangerous by losing our mental selves. However, if we focus on being true to ourselves, less dangerous we become. This is why Disney portrayed this scene so well when Mei sees her mother in that broken state. She noticed how hurt her mother had been as a teenager and the reason why she treated her that way.

The choices of outfit between Mei Mei (pinks) and the rest of the family (greens) is very color theory heavy. Green is opposite to red, so everyone else wearing it is a representation of them separating themselves from their pandas further. Meanwhile Mei Mei's pinks/reds/purples are all colors revolving around a red base, exemplifying that she's closer to her other side and sticking to it.

I'm a 69-year-old black man, but I adore this movie. I have a daughter who was a young teen in the early 2000s, so I relate to a lot of it. It's well worth multiple watches. Mei's mom doesn't like Miriam...and I notice that Miriam is the only non-Asian of Mei's friends. The contrast between Mei's friends and Penny Proud's friends is stark. I've got issues with "The Proud Family," and that's one of them. Penny has zero genuine friends. The cool shot of Mei in the sky with the red moon in the back was reminiscent of the Sailor Moon "victory" pose and shot. See, I had a daughter who was that age back then. so I catch these things. Green is the opposite color of red on the color wheel. Also, green is like jade, and both are considered lucky in China. Four is considered an unlucky number in China, btw.

"I find it interesting that the whole family kinda wears green, but Mei-Mei wears pink and purple." I don't understand what people are so mad about because I honestly love the movie (btw, I know its been a year since this movie but sTILL-). There is no problem with periods, in my opinion at least, because it's a natural part of female human anatomy. And Mei Mei's a 13 YEAR OLD! I got my period when I was 9-10, and thank God my mom made me aware of periods and such before I got it because I got mine at a McDonald's for a daycare trip. Yeah. McDonald's. So the fact that this movie addressed that this is normal for a pre-teen is honorable. Props to the director, writers, etc.

I was 11 when I got my first period. My little sister was 9 and my mom, she was 8. Call me lucky. I’m happy that Turning Red is all about periods because all girls get her period. We shan’t make the period talk taboo. It’s the process of a girl becoming a woman. Being able to have kids of her own *if* she wants kids. When my future daughter gets her first period, I’m showing her Turning Red. I watched this and I was like “I’m going to show this movie to my future daughters!” I know that I 18, but I don’t care. Periods aren’t taboo. There are some men in the real world who don’t think periods shouldn’t exist. They are idiots who shan’t exist. So be grateful that we talk about periods.

Awesome reaction!! 🐼👩🏻🦰❤️ I love Pixar! Turning Red what an adorable furry panda it’s beautiful, I need to see it again. I’m crying already at the scene with Mei’s dad. Her family fully understanding Mei + the friend group is super heartwarming!! A brief story- in 5th grade we watched a video on periods. The real kicker they switched us, the girls saw boys puberty and vice versa it was chaotic. But at least guys will sorta know our pain 😂
