Rukka Nivala 2 Review - 2 Years & 30,000 Miles!

I'm one of those old enough to remember Hein Geriche as one of the leaders in quality riders gear. Over the years I've heard all the pros and cons of the $$ versus cheaper riding suits. Wearing the best that one can afford is the answer. A rain suit over a vented jacket served me well last July in extreme heat. If I needed 100% comfort and dryness, I'd use a car., but that would take the "adventure " out of why I travel by moto. Very good review. Keep them coming. A loyal U S fan.

I agree. I'm still using my Hein Gericke jacket from around 2001. I can't say it's now absolutely 100% waterproof but I value it having four pockets on the front, one inside and one on the back, plus a detachable storm collar. And a detachable insulating lining. Perhaps the company went to the wall because they were selling quality kit too cheaply. The main reason I haven't replaced the old jacket is only partly financial. In most jackets these days, upper front pockets seem to have been replaced by zippable air vents. I can live with being sweaty if I'm wearing a base layer and drink enough water at fuelling stops. What I prefer is adequate storage. Am I alone in wanting four pockets on the front to stow: bike lock keys that I don't want jangling on the bike's paintwork; house keys; ear plugs; glasses; credit/debit cards & driving licence; 90 degree tyre valve stems; and a tyre pressure gauge? I value practicality over style, but each to their own. And it now largely seems that only premium-priced jackets come with storm collars. (Come on! We don't all live where 'It Never Rains In Southern California')

Ah yes, I recall Hein Gericke kit. It had a good reputation with affordable pricing and loads of my biker mates still speak highly of Hein Gericke.

I still have the 2009(?) HG pro-shell, now worn indigo and black with near 150,000 Km on it. Kevlar rip-stop too and the trousers’ fly now opens on auto😊. Your suit sounds like a good candidate to replace it and that price is pretty steep. Divide that over 15 years and it’s not so bad an insurance for all-weather survival. It’s be even better if I could find a good fit. Better yet if the women’s sizes aren’t only made for Barbie figures! (I can’t understand why “all-season” non- laminates still get sold either; they’re a health risk when the waterproof inner allows the outer to be soaked and to steal body heat with wind chill and not dry out over night. ) Thanks for the review!

Buy once, buy right. I learnt this the hard way. Several cheaper suits bought and used and either sold, given away or returned due to faults. I now ride in similar costing Klim gear and two years on its worth every single penny.

I’ve been wearing the same Rukka jacket for 12 years. Interesting you post this today Andy. Yesterday I had two pocket zips break on me. I paid 1k 12 yrs ago and it’s been back for two main zips in that time. It is however, still waterproof. As long as you wash them they will look after you. Trousers are in better shape. I moved to Rukka after the gen 2 BMW rallye soaked me in a medium downpour. Miss my first generation BMW jacket. They were made in Germany and as such were excellent.

I have had Rukka gloves with were fantastic and lasted well, no doubt this kit is as good as you say. In this instance you get what you pay for. BTW. I love your work on KZbin ive been watching you for years, well done for all of it.

I bought the first nivala suit in 2017 and still riding in it now, best riding gear I’ve ever bought. I commute 80 miles a day for work and the nivala keeps me dry and warm. I have a warm and safe heated jacket for the winter to keep warm in the really cold temperatures.

I've had a Rukka pro gortex textile jacket and trousers for 8 years and it's never leaked. Mine too isn't good on the ventilation but I have a seperate mesh suit if the weather is too hot for my normal kit. I think the idea of the zip is to prevent the jacket and trousers from separating and exposing your mid torso if you have an off so I always zip mine together. Expensive kit, but you get what you pay for. Buy cheap buy twice comes to mind 🙈

For the same price you can get a Hideout tailor made suit, that fits you properly, with pockets and vents etc exactly where you want them! I had the vents on my Hideout suit repositioned as I like to wear a Kreiga Hydropak in the summer, and the vents open and work with the shoulder straps. Plus, they are rated to the highest level for a textile suit. There's a good reason the Police wear Hideout, but aren't allowed to wear Rukka 😉

Actually I think you’ll find the police aren’t mandated to wear anything in particular - when I joined them on bike patrol last year I was told they are given an allowance to buy the kit they want and in fact the example given of the sort of kit they do buy was Rukka , Halvarrson’s, Dane, et cetera. Interesting what you say about Hideout though, I didn’t know that.

@@TheMissendenFlyer not true of all Forces. In most you can only wear approved PPE, and not wearing that is against policy, and will cause you issues in a crash. Although a lot of coppers wear Rukka, it's their choice, and a blind eye is turned. In my local Force, Rukka is banned because it doesn't meet the required PPE standards. On another note, Rukka never fitted me properly either. I guess my dimensions don't meet the 'average' the suits are all made to?

The Met motorcyclists in general are issued Rukka Kalix 2 suits. The others tend to wear higher end Rukka. The Rukka Kingsley was designed for the Met, but was deemed too expensive, hence the issue of Kalix 2.

Their website is showing 'off the peg' laminate suits for £1,350.00 - £1,404.00. Add 30% for made to measure. Their stuff is great and I'm a fan but you have to pay more for what you describe.

Absolutely fantastic kit, I bought exactly the same suit this year. I returned to motorcycling after a 40 year break and bought a Weis suit then Richa goretex but neither were comfortable and as I have started as a blood biker now and need some comfortable I went to Motolegends who recommended the Nivala 2 what a difference, you certainly get what you pay for.

When I got back into biking 4 years ago and had to start again, the concensus of opinion was don't spend a fortune on gear in the beginning. Mistakenly, I went along with this, and over a few years I've spent a fortune on clothing and boots and have just ended up with a warehouse full of at best mediocre gear. I now wish I'd just gone out and bought the best and most expensive gear at the outset. The money saved would have probably paid for a couple of foreign trips. The worst that could have happened is that I didn't pursue the hobby and I'd have to sell everything. However, the loss on top quality gear like Rukka would have been minimal.

@@paulyflyer8154 like you I also spent loads on gear not fit for purpose and found I was constantly chopping and changing my gear at the lower end of the market. Eventually I bit the bullet and bought a Klim Badlands Pro suit back in 2017. It lasted 7 years before I sold it to a mate who is doing green-laning. So I’ve learnt that the very best gear will be suitable in all conditions and last at least 7 times as long as cheap gear getting replaced every year. Unfortunately I don’t like the new fashion of storm collars as they sit too far up my neck, so I didn’t buy the new Klim Kodiak and instead got the Kilm Marrakesh with layers (wind and rain) - still can’t beat a proper gore-tex suit with vents for all conditions.

Well I could afford that kind of Rukka suit (and have had Rukka in the past) its just my view its not that good value,, I bought a Oxford Mondial suit ,,and it also just works ( its warm ,,waterproof ,,sturdy,,and cheapish))) why pay more!!!

Thanks for your long term review! and glad you like it. You said get the best kit money can buy, and I can afford the cost, so I considered the Rukka the the Klim Kodiak for my on-road LD touring on my DCT Tour. I ultimately went with a Klim Marrakesh jacket. The wearability, 1000D Cordura throughout and AA rating were deciding factors, and I added liners and layers for different weather conditions. It doesn’t have the heft and bomb proof feel the other two jackets have, so I’ll see if this kit will work in the long term.

120000 miles so far from my Rukka had the zip replaced under warranty once. 6 years old now and got at least another 6 and another 120000 miles left in it. So not really that expensive. 👍😎 FB

I'm 15 years into a Rukka suit, expensive, yes, but now wouldn't have anything else. Rukka gloves too,also my Daytona boots are coming up to tens years old. Surley it's only expensive if it doesn't work or doesn't last. I find it great value for money. Mine has never leaked.

Thanks for the review. I'm pretty serious about my riding, yet the price of Rukka to me is insane. I ride through all weather. Cold is not a problem. Rain is. I use kit from Alipinestars. Protection is fine, although you have to pay extra for for exampe a back protector. Main issue: it was perfectly waterproof for year 1 and 2 and than it started to fail. Spraying it did help as long as you are not in a downpour. So... I got a separate rain suit (an overall) which, together with the Alpinestar kit does keep me dry. A bit tedious to put on, that's the main drawback to me. Yet all kit combined is about 6-700 EUR, complete. I also tend to use either my RT or my recently acquired maxi scooter when a lot of rain is expected. Weather protection on both is already quite good.

I had my Nivala 1 for 3 years and 50,000 miles it still working perfectly The chest protector is zipped in and larget than the one on the 2 The inner storm cuffs are a great idea as is the detachable storm collars There is also a crotch strap Someone mentioned hidout but is the jacket made from 3 layer Gortex with stretch woven in Fantastic suit the trousers even have a built in air cushion and I love the braces Based on 6 years of warranty its not that expensive

Kit corners back! Good review on the Nivala 2 jacket 👍 price a bit salty for me though! I done a review on the new Rukka Kemi Jacket I bought & it is simply outstanding! for the price,vents in all the usual place, bicep adjuster, lovely attention to detail, curved zip to ease of use with gloves etc. lanyard for key hold. Abrasion on shoulders & elbows a nice touch. D30 Lvl 2 armour in shoulders & elbows & Lvl 1 back protector. All of the usual refinements of a Rukka, it is a far more comfortable jacket than the Nivala 2.0 due the stretch that is infused into the fabric, it is way lighter than the Nivala 2.0 & imo I doubt you'll not get a more comfortable Rukka Jacket than this. No goretex with this (AWS pro motorsport) however Rukka certainly do know how to make laminate work properly, I was out with this jacket when the heavens opened up & this did now let me down absolutely bone dry! The price is absolutely fantastic, if you take all of the bells & whistles that the Nivala 2.0 has that the Kemi doesn't…. Storm collar… down jacket…chest protector etc. The difference is £650. If you add all of above to Kemi etc. you'd still have £350 left so imo it is a much better buy. A nice mid layer & your all sorted with this jacket. It's now my go to Jacket, the build quality is absolutely superb, a great Jacket.

Great insight into the Rukka kit Andy, but I bought the Oxford mondial suite after watching your other review and recommendation 5years ago. So my question is to you is it worth the extra 2 grand on top over the Oxford mondial suite which has been an excellent bit of kit. Yes that Oxford kit is great value for money but on occasion mine did let me down in the crotch area (wet bum after a downpour) - not had that issue with the Rukka, that has to be worth something!

I think the mondial kit is excellent too, and even though i thought it was expensive at the time because i didnt have any reference to compare it to, has proved a great investment. i wear the jacket every time i ride, paired with kevlar jeans in warmer weather and the mondial trews when it's colder or looking like it may rain, id recommend to anyone.

Good gear is worth the price in many ways, enables us to extend our riding limits, and protects us in the event of an off. I've ridden in the Kilm Badlands Pro for three years and all sorts of climates and still have an AeroStitch one piece I've had since 2008 or so. The one piece suit was great for commuting but it wasn't waterproof, the Klim has handled everything thrown at it, it just isn't as easy to don & doff.

i think it was dunhill that said quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, but still, i wouldn't forget £2400 on a jacket and trousers lol. when i started biking i gulped at spending something like £600 on oxford mondial clothing on top of everything else, but a few years later still love 'em and they're still protective, waterproof, warm and in great condition after about 15,000 miles, but hey, if you use the rukka gear every day, you can afford it and it makes life better, good on ya !!

Another great video Andy. I tried this jacket on at SBS recently. It was very comfortable, but whilst all kit is a compromise, this has 2 big downsides; price and safery rating. Yes I understand that the stretch material limits burst strength, but AAA is a low bar to begin with. When manufacturers can make AAA stretch shirts and single layer jeans, we should not be accepting anything that is single A anymore, and should he pushing for much higher bars in the next regs update.

Interesting review. It's always stood out as good quality gear but is a bit pricey for me personally so I've never owned any. Although no doubting it's quality & you definitely get what you pay for. Great review of a very good and important piece of equipment. Well out of my price rate, as I only ride for pleasure. It would be well worth the outlay if I used my bike for employment etc. I have the Oxford Mondial 4 which has also never let me down over 2 years. Love the kit corner segments.

Oxford Riggers are excellent for protective riding jeans as they have strong clips that handle the extra weight of d30 inserts.

Just a small point. I do wear braces but I have to take my jacket off to release the top of the trousers to wee. No problems as long as there is somewhere to hang the jacket.

I have a 13 year old Alpinestars jacket I’ve never washed. I feel washing brings bad juju. I’ve scrubbed it with soap and water, hosed it down. That’s acceptable. So no worries about the 2 years no wash.

Really enjoyed this one. I purchased the Rukka Exgal suit four years ago, and that’s premium too. Wouldn’t be without it, loads of miles covered and perfectly comfortable and dry in heavy rain. The outlay is definitely worth the price in my opinion.

Good review as always mate thank you. Over £2k for a riding suit? I think you summed it up well. For a professional rider who is out in all weathers, Yes it's probably the way to go. But I strongly suspect for less than half that price, shall I say the hobby bikers and I include myself in that category, can purchase a more than adequate set up which will meet their needs. In a similar vein to your BMW GS13 review a week or two back. Great kit, but too bl**dy expensive for most mere mortals. Lol.

Hi Andy, without doubt the Rukka range of clothing are at the pinnacle in motorcycle clothing, I have been debating what to replace my Alpinestars Ketchum stuff with, which I have to sat has never let me down, but I have been caught between the Rukka and Klim stuff, and as you say the weight of the triple layer stuff puts me off a little, but you may have just swung me with your evaluation. I record footage of bike tours with my mates, not specifically for KZbin but more to share within our group of our memories riding together. I was using GoPro 10 but due to unreliability of the GoPro and hit or miss audio capture I recently upgraded to DJI Action 4 based on your recommendation. Now for the question; how do you capture both your voice and clear engine sounds when out riding please, thank you in advance.

I found your review of the Rukka gear informative. However, I have always thought that the gear is designed for naked bikes. I have a fairing and quite different protection. Have you thought about doing some tests with faired and naked bikes with your riding gear? I'd be interested in what differences there might be on the different bikes

Hi Andy. Great video. I agree with you about the rating. As Chris the Chap in the Hat says, the bigger size of the Rukka armour would be make a bigger difference if you came off. I have a 5 yo Rukka suit its been fantastic. It is Goretex Pro too. I have a Rukka summer jacket for our summers here in Australia 🇦🇺. Also when wash it you have to follow a certain procedure it keep it waterproof. You need DWR- Durable Water Repellent treatment.

I bought the same suit and yes it is expensive but I bought it on a two year interest free payment deal, this makes it very easy to own the best bit of riding gear I have ever owned.

I buy high end gear and it’s certainly worth the coin. But, it would be interesting to know how well it holds up over a decade or so and if it’s sellable at this point. If so, the high cost may be mitigated more than we think. Truthfully, if I could stumble on the gear being reviewed here, used and treated well after ten years, for 30% of the original cost - I’d buy it.

It was the venting that put me off getting it (I run hot at the best of times), that and the fact I like a slightly longer jacket. But I will say this, once you've had a Gore-Tex Pro 3-layer laminate you'll pay up for it next time without thinking.

In response to those critical of the review on the basis of the cost of the kit, he is not forcing you to buy it! We all have choices according to budget and if you can afford trips costing £k’s why wouldn’t you seek to use the best kit to make sure you are comfortable. TMF has used the gear long term so why not review it. I couldn’t justify the cost and even one UK retailer who appears to sell substantial quantities of Rukka claims that Halvarssons is 90% of the quality of Rukka for 50% of the price. People have the right to choose to buy the best irrespective of what they actually require. Maybe on his next trip TMF can be persuaded to use wadded newspaper and bin bags to provide a comparison at the other end of the budget scale!

I think that chest padding obviates the safety concern about abrasion resistance in that area. Anyone who has come off at 50mph as I have, will understand just how important abrasion resistance is.

I bought the original Nivala suit when this new version was launched - its very much the same as this version (according to Motolegends anyway) and I got it at a third of the price of this one. It's truly excellent and one of the best suits I have had (and in 40 years of riding I have had many many outfits) but that said, apart from the very occasional long trip, i've never really worn it as for my 4 mile each way commute it was total overkill - instead as a daily beater I wear an Oxford Mondial laminate, cheap as chips, which is also excellent.

Haven’t bought into Rukka (as yet) I’ve been more than happy with my cheaper and super comfortable Halvarssons gear . Saying that my Sunne pants (which are advertised as laminated but not gortex ) leaked around the crotch and backside on a persistent rain day in the Picos. Sent back to Motolegends and replaced with a new pair. I’ve yet to test the new pair for their waterproofness. Saying all this I do know riders whose Rukka pants have taken in water in the same areas.

Yes quality in biking clothing is brilliant for those who can afford it , I’m fortunate I can afford to buy this equipment, would I , NO, , I use RST for me it’s totally adequate for the riding I do ,I have been unfortunate occasionally and caught in several horrendous rain storms I’ve had no major issues , my jacket and trousers are 7 years old admittedly it’s not used every time I ride,🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 nice video 👍🏻

I was in the proces of buying the Nivala (call Rapto-R in other countries). Nice comfortable jacket (and troussers) but stitches on the inside of elbow (there is hump of stiches there). irritated my skin very much. After wearing it for 30 min i had already red irritation spots on my skin in that place. So i bought the Shield-r which doesn't have the hump of stiches. It basicly the same jacket but without the stretch panels.

Hi Andy, being a Yorkshire man you’ve given me palpitations with that price ! A little tip, wait for the next years Oxford laminate Jacket and trousers to go on sale, buy the outgoing suit, hundreds saved and it’s a good suit. For total protection on the upper body it’s a Knox shirt and under the trousers it’s Hood jeans. I’ve got plenty of articulation even with all that on, plus vents. Right…..I think my heart has started slowing now.

Heavy and err pricey. I acquired an Hein Gericke (what happened to them?) Goretex two piece suit they were selling off as it was ‘last year’s colours’ for half price £350! Ok! A few years ago but it has never let me down touring even through France (never been to France when it has not bucketed down at some stage, especially when camping). Anyway the kit has full armour, which could be updated, but it’s still top class. Kit bargains are now limited but still possible and alternatives can be risky if sourced from the far East without CE testing. If you have the budget then by all means Rukka or say Halvarssons etc are excellent bits of kit, but there are bargains to be had, though trial and error may be involved. However, getting wet and cold on a long ride is not fun.

Everyone is a Rukka hater until they try it. I ride in all weather all over the UK and for the last twenty years have had two Rukka suits. They are simply bombproof and 100% trustworthy. Not a fan of that stupid chest protector on the latest Nivala… but otherwise all positive… as to cost… 2k over ten years is pretty good I say!

Nice bit of kit but personally I would never pay £2,400 for a bike jacket and trousers. I bought my Hein Gerricke Four Seasons jacket about 25 years ago for around £200 and it still looks good, does the job and no zip has ever failed.

The riding gear looks very high quality as well but lots of reviews saying they are cut very large and bulky. The Rukka looks more streamlined…….subjective I suppose. Rukka kit is brilliant but pricey. However in almost 25 years of motorcycling I have only had three Rukka jackets and all three still work. I will point out I have also two summer teabag style jackets as well as leathers, but the Rukka Jackets do most of the day to day work. I plan to buy a full Rukka suit next year as a present to myself, either Nivala or Kingsley.

Andy, You’re not wrong. The Kingsley is the range topping suit that was designed for the Met Police, but they found it too expensive. From what I read the Nivala is probably more comfortable day to day. We will see.

I commented before about the safety rating of the top priced gore tex pro clothing. It is disappointing that they only get an A rating for safety. I have the Dane Nimbus 2 eleven or twelve hundred pound jacket similar to the Rukka. I appreciate the jacket feels pretty robust but feeling pretty robust and being robust are very different hence the single A rating.

For what it's worth IMO my kit is my only protection and I'll much sooner spend my money on gear than on having a 'latest and greatest" bike. Come to think of it, the three Richa outfits (summer, "Not looking good" and "cats&dogs") I have atm and my Shoei lid will probably amount to a higher price tag than my bikes. After decades of all year riding I think it's safe to say that comfortable, reliable kit is worth it's weight in gold and is going to do more for you safety-wise than most of the electronic whiz-bangery on modern machines. Also, braces. Yes. Yes bruv.

Rukka is just another European company who have outsourced their manufacturing to China. Hideout is the place to go for quality motorcycle gear which you can have tailor made with extra vents etc etc and of course it’s AAA rated.

I've got this kit and I had Rukka suit before this one. In my opinion there's been a massive decline in Rukka quality my previous Rukka gear it was in a different league .l won't be buying another Rukka suit unless they make some major improvements. Best feature for me is the size of the armour that's a major safety feature and a class leader but overall I think others such as Klim are putting out higher quality gear these days.

@@TheMissendenFlyer They used to use more expensive high tech materials and a much higher quality general build. My old suit had a heat reflective element built in, outlast removable inner jacket and was made from a more protective material. The old suit I could ride all day in the rain and cold and it kept me dry that's not the case with the Nivala I've had water ingress around the neck, waist , sleeves and into the boots whilst wearing the same boots as in my previous suit. I had two offs in the last suit and was protected and it remained waterproof I gave the suit away when I replaced it and it's still giving good service I'm not sure exactly how old it is now but would estimate 17 year's old if you put the two suites together and compare the old ones way better I regret replacing it.

Washing is actually a biggie. A lot of motorcycle clothing simply can't cope with washing and the process often renders the little waterproofing the clothing had to start with, useless. It would be interesting to see how this super expensive kit deals with it, and whether you have to do other things after such as special proofing treatments.

The real test would be how well a Rukka lasts over 10 or 12 years. They used to be “the one to beat” but other makers have now caught up and equalled Rukka quality. It will be interesting to see how Rukka respond to losing such a firm grasp on the premium market sector. Shock horror = with the likes of Stadler & Klim snapping at their heels will they have to drop their prices to stay competitive?

Like you mentioned, you have ridden bikes that cost less, I understand the philosophy of buy the best, but come on.. 2.5k for trousers and a jacket.. sounds like the dragons den episode where the woman was selling a 'premium' watch for £300 that cost £15 from china... I have no doubt this is full of tech and also appears to last the miles, but it is not perfect as you mentioned (venting), there has to be comparable kit out there for a sensible price range? Have a rukka suit. Its brilliant. Only gripe 2 zips have failed on me. Out off all my textile gear the rukka suit feels the safest. Also warm weather its no good . I have the held carese evo for summer time . Tbh i wouldn't buy the nivala gloves again, they leaked after a month then a few months later stitching started to fail.the joys off buying over the Internet. So buy local.

Seems to me biking is getting to be more of a fashion show these days . At least that gear is black & not girly looking like the light coloured adventure suits . I am in a position where I could afford high end kit , but it wouldn’t last five minutes worn by me . I tend to stuff the pockets with things like spanner’s ,mole grips & sundry bike items . I don’t spend more than a few hundred on textile suits , as I tend to wear them a year or two, until they look really grotty . I then purchase a new set of textiles on the proviso ,that the dealer puts my old ones in their bin . I will be after a new set if textiles soon , but I am setting my limit to 500 to maybe 600 quid tops if I am feeling in a good mood . 👍
