Fun fact: this song was written to unite the peoples of the kingdoms into one movement to strike back at ongoing raids the British coast was suffering. Although, at the time, the British fleet did exist and had a fearsome reputation, the British coast was largely undefended, the Mediterranean was rather lawless, and slavers and pirates swarmed the British coast. In response to huge numbers of Britons being stolen into slavery in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, Britain revitalised it's fleet, established new standards for warships (introducing the "rate" system to describe warship types and their roles), and put forth a patriotic call for the Isles' inhabitants to join this increased force. This song was written as part of that patriotic recruitment campaign. And it succeeded! In short order, slavers no longer posed a threat to British coastal settlements (and other European nations on the North Sea also enjoyed the reprieve, with several likewise conducting a coastal naval fleet revitalisation, including Holland and France), piracy was reduced, and the trade with the British overseas colonies was fairly safe on the final legs of their voyages home. This in turn established the economic and maritime capabilities necessary for Britain to become the dominant global powerhouse of the 18th and 19th Centuries. This is also why there is such a strong reference to antislavery in the song - this was the catchcry to unite the nation from the previous three kingdoms!

Slavery coming from Africa and the Middle East doesn't fit the woke agenda that white people created slavery. Unfortunately the colonial powers reignited the slave trade when exploration of the America's began after the European continent had been free of slavery since Roman times. Granted, they had other unjust systems, but nothing compared to the slavery that existed in the Western Hemisphere. Somebody had to be the original sellers of slaves.
@euanpc3322 Жыл бұрын
can I have a source for that? I cant find anything on any raids in 1740 on the coast and besides that the song was written at least 10 years after the golden age of piracy.

Just after the Falklands War, there was a ship called the MV Norland, a ferry taken up for the duration of the war by the MOD, and it was used to transport POWs back. When she slipped from Argentina on the way to back to pick up another load to return, the ship's crew sounded the horn three times, hoisted the red ensign on the jack and played this over the tannoy system on the outer decks This angered the Argentine government and greatly amused everyone else
@khantsal23059 ай бұрын
@Trek001 Oh, It would be very funny. The stupid argentinians think that they could easily defeat the UK but the thing that they really don't know is Argentina's level is too low compare to British. Argentina is regional power and British is global power. British have much more stronger economic, military and influential to the world. Falkland island is very close to Argentina but very far away from mainland UK. British fought the Falkland war 80000 km away from UK but finally British win and Argentina defeated. And do you know after the Falkland war, Australia, canada, new Zealand expelled the Argentinian diplomat from their country.

it’s poetry and music something the Brits are well known for, for having command of the English language and sending it into battle. Marvellous seafaring tough rugged dogged people. They have given the world so much yet they have done more good than bad and it’s people that always focus in on the bad. British people should hold their heads up high and be proud of their nation.

"If size really mattered the elephant would be king of the jungle." Britain really puts that quote in perspective. A small island nation which conquered much more than any other country has ever done. Truly remarkable from a pragmatic pov.

AS an Australian the sun has set. Actually i grew up having to pledge allegiance to QE2 every Monday morning at school in the 1970's. QE2 is still on the back of our coins, soon to be replaced by King Charles. Still no mood in Australia to be a Republic

Sarah Connelly, sang this at the Poms and WOW She sings in miale roles and her voice is one you never forget When she sang RB at the Poms she was in full uniform from the age of Nelson. What has become of the UK in the past 10 yrs is sadly disgusting. A UK Army Vet was arrested charged and fined 12,000BS, what for Saying a Silent Prayer on the sidewalk near an abortion clinic. If you think this cannot happen here in the USA, then you are shortminded when in the Covid crap, churches, temples were closed, but hey mosques no problem they were allowed to stay open. If the govt ever tries that again on us US citizens see how many politiciains, judges et al, will rue to the day they were birthed
