I think that the best way the parents can teach their children speak languages is talking in their own languages since the beginning, like Naeun and Gunhoo, their mother is German and they talk in German and with their grandmother in Spanish.

Sam has mentioned before that he'll speak English to William and Bentley outside of filming to be respect of the show. But I'm sure he switches between Korean and English anyways, hence why the boys at least understand some English.

@@limwowo5902 not really. Gunhoo may have a slight speech delay but it doesn't mean speaking different languages didn't work for him too. Speaking different languages doesn't cause speech delay in children. If you watch their recent episodes in TROS and at Park Jooho's yt channel you can see that Gunhoo has improved a lot in speaking. He can clearly understands both English and Korean and can even run errands now.

I know people are comparing this to naeun but there are plenty of kids that don't start learning their second language until they are bentley and williams age or older and it's still effective. I think the only real issue that arises is kids being against it like bentley. It's frustrating not being able to communicate as a kid. As long as sam keeps trying, in a few years they'll be speaking it well :)

Plus Anna once explained that Naeun is more advanced in language skills than other children so that why ages able to pick up other languages in her age
@purplewatermelon7102
@purplewatermelon7102 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah also Anna always gives so much care not speaking in Korean to her kids because they already get that from their dad and surroundings since they live there. A kid is influenced a lot by their parents so her mom only speaking German, English,Spanish to her will be more efficient for the kids being fluently multilingual. I feel like not just Naeun but Gunhoo is also very good at understanding languages and it's probably cuz Anna's teaching technique. Sam always seems to speak in Korean during the show, their mom always speaks Korean so it makes sense why the kids are more comfortable with Korean. It's very different teaching techniques. Naeun is also a person who has good language skills so she can not only speak and understand 4(?) languages but she is comfortable enough to use all of them to speak to strangers,etc. That part shows her language skills. But the capability of understanding and speaking to parents comes from how their parents approached them since birth

This brings me back to when I was little and my parents wouldn't allow me and my siblings to speak English on the weekends and my sister used to get so frustrated since she wasn't fluent in Spanish like me. They might hate it as kids, but it's good in the long run to be able to communicate with others in a different language. Since he's still so little, if Sam keeps up the English with Bentley, he will get it pretty quick.

Psychology of learning ... the readiness of the subject to learn is a great factor.. but habit and environment are too. Adults and kids alike, adapt even unconsciously. I fully agree with you. Not every kid is ready at the same age. And yes, habit and environment also play a major role. I started learning languages at the age of 6 and i was very blessed being a child that learned very quickly. On top i had the privilege of having a dad who was a polyglot. I grew up as a Belgian in Germany, surrounded by multiple languages. At the age of 21 i even started learning Italian... and now at the age of 54 i feel ready to take another challenge... My Mum is South Korean and my Dad English. My Mum spoke to me in Korean all the time as her English was not great. So I had a very early exposure to two languages. My sister, born 5 years later, didn't have that opportunity as my Mum had more English friends and as I went to school spoke to me more in English so she wasn't exposed to it as much. As time went on I became disinterested with Korean and stopped using it but it happened the opposite to my sister who picked up Korean around 10. Now, I use it whenever I can and fluently. My little sister, who didn't have immediate experience or exposure, also has good understanding of it. Yes, this is bilingualism vs second language, I did a dissertation researching it so believe me I know all the theories behind bilingualism bilingualism cognitive development, but it just shows that it doesn't really matter which age you learn your parents language. It's just important that you do get exposure to it and know when and where to use it. And interest in learning is a HUGE factor. You can't force a child to learn if they don't want to. They resist it and so don't pick it up as naturally.

Teaching kids different languages helps stimulate their brain (same as learning music) and help them becoming smarter as they grow. Ben and William have so much advantage here that they grow up in an international family, it really depends on if Sam reinforces it. I’ve always thought Sam speaks to them in English behind the camera, at least that’s what I’d think. Everyone has their own pace when it comes to learning, Naeun is definitely a genius in the language aspect, some people are just better with languages, nobody should compare them. Knowing more is always better than less when it comes to languages, especially when it’s part of your own culture.

I had the same struggle as well. My first language is English and there are sometimes where my parent spoke to me in Tagalog. I used to know how to speak it by when I was in the 4th grade but somehow lost it. So I only understood the language not until I went to the Philippines and stayed for 5 years. The most struggling part is that we lived where my mother was from and they used a dialect, which I didn't learn to understand not until my 9th grade. 😄

I can relate lol I speak other language with my fam since we live in a countryside, i speak mixed english and tagalog with my friends, then speak tagalog with my fam in manila. It's confusing but once you get used to it, it will be easy.

it's a real struggle for Sam since they are on a korean show so it's necessary to speak in korean although he might speak to them when they aren't shooting it might also cause confusion with Ben and Will. Rooting for these two babies!

this is great for them... my whole family is dominican and speaks spanish, however i never learned how to verbally speak spanish when i was growing up, i can only understand it and read it perfectly though... i wish i had been able to learn how to verbally speak it instead of understanding it and replying only in english 🥲 i guess my parents thought only speaking it to me would do the job, i wish they forced me like this lol

Sam does this to be interesting. I don’t understand why he didn’t speak English to his kids before. English is his first language.

I may not be mixed, but I was born in another country, so I understand how hard it is to manage speaking both languages, my parents also used to make me speak Turkish at home, and now I am super thankful, because of that I still can speak it despite not living in Turkey. My suggestion is for them to stay in Australia for a bit, because being in a country naturally makes you use the language more and is helpful !

i think it really depends on the ability of the kid while growing up. my italian teacher who was born and raised here in canada doesn't even know how to speak italian although his parents often used italian at home esp his grandparents who don't speak english at all. but he could understand italian tho. he said it's not just his ability to adapt different languages.

I think one thing that people are overlooking is that William and Bentley are used to Korean and English in their home but Bentley sees comfort in Korean not that he doesn’t know English at the basic level. He’s also young so keep that in mind as well.

So we are required to be at least bilingual in my country (I'm pretty sure you can guess which country by now) My parents are both Chinese and they can't speak English well cuz in the olden days there are Chinese schools and they learn everything in Chinese. I grew up speaking Chinese and I failed English through out primary school as i literally spoke English by translating it from Chinese until I got hooked on reading books. That's when my English started improving and I actually topped the class for the last two years in primary school. I still speak Chinese within my family and English with my friends. My Chinese was a constant A since Primary 1 and I maintain my English at a B. So my point is that it really helps if you learn a language that is more difficult when you are younger to build foundations, which is what I believe Sam is trying to do now :))
