Hi, german navy nomenclature varies a lot. There was a K class of light cruisers that have cities namesonly with the letter K, like Köningsberg, Koln or Karlsruhe. Then you have the famous generals or admirals of the past like Hindenburg or Graf von Spee. Using cities names is for shure way to get germanic names. Or River names. I watch videos from a naval historian (Clarke) who really dislikes the use of "pre-dreadnought" for that reason. He prefers the term "steam battleships" and then (IIRC) "Majestics" for that period with the RN Majestic-class indicating the period before Dreadnought where the battleships tended to the 2x12" guns on each end and the bundle of 6" secondary guns.

Its like calling piston engine planes "Pre-Jetplanes"
@Silamon2 Жыл бұрын
@@marxel4444 I think the difference is that when jet planes started to get introduced they did not completely revolutionize aviation. There were still things piston engines were better at, and jet engines had enough flaws to create 2 different schools of thought where some would opt to go for the more reliable piston engines and some would go for the more powerful jet. Jets were clearly better, but they had a lot of flaws. Compare that to dreadnoughts vs pre dreadnoughts. When Dreadnoughts became a reality, all previous battleships were basically invalidated. Dreadnoughts were just straight up better right out the gate. So while piston engines continued to be relevant for a while after jets became a thing Dreadnoughts completely changed the playing field and revolutionized warship development. I think that's why there is a pre-dreadnought term but not a pre-jet term in common use.

Small slow battleships are often purpose built as costal or port defense ships. They lasted as long as a "viable" ship idea as long as battleships did. Its bad at power projection, but they make a good defense for smaller nations as they can maul enemy ships in their waters. Shallow draft is often a feature making them able to move and hide places larger ships can't. So if can often be a case of the enemy has to fight them with relatively equal tonnage cruisers which is not a good idea.

Brink of War November of 1891 ???? From what I could remember, it was a long, tense year. Every day brought the everpresent reminder of what my father had said that night in October - that "_something_ was not a peace - that it was an armistice for 20 years." As the days crawled onwards, it grew less and less like the rant of an angry man, and more like the words of a mad prophet. Being the child I was, I did not quite see it as the rather tense situation it was. However, I could still see how the tension between my father and brother grew- not many words were spoken, but that much was clear. As the month followed, I saw my father less and less - he came home more rarely, more exhausted than he seemingly ever had been- It was a simple explanation for a child, that he was not "Preparing for a possible war" and instead "Undergoing training to protect the ship he was on." It was silly - but it made things easier to understand. Yet two months later an incident occurred - What became a calculated decision to desperately attempt to gain funding to challenge the French, by provoking the _Royal Navy_ and an Italian spy being captured . . . became a simple game of teasing between countries and playing tag. Of all the things that _Could_ have brought war to Europe; Bringing devastation to thousands, if not millions of people, whether on land or overseas- A small colonial gunboat under the name of the August Pieper steaming into the Agadir after an incident in Morroco . . . was decidedly not one of them. Looking at the old newspapers all these years later makes it somewhat funny - as funny as the great game between powers could be. However, it also gave me a window into how grim things were back then- the desperate, but slow commissioning and designing of new vessels, every month was crucial for survival. Commissioning of new British Battleships, rumours in France of going to war with us . . . if that was not clear enough already. The Building of a new coastal battery in the Baltics. . . and the designing of our own, proper Battleships - a step forward from where we once were, but not _quite_ a true detachment from the "Coastal Battleship" philosophy. Yet surprisingly it did not cause that much of an incident in France - Was it arrogance? We would probably never know their true feelings about our new battleships, but things continued- a little more stirred in the pot, so to speak. Feelings in Germany were quite a bit different - Euphoria- the revival of the national pride - just a bit. Just enough for a Private Shipyard to offer to build another of the rather ironically, confusingly named- Schildkröte class protected cruisers. It was never quite figured out exactly _Why_ it was named the "Turtle" - Was it the Armament? Heavy Armament Turtle? Definitely not speed- considering the class itself was a Merger of the Cheapness of the Niobe class and the high engine power of the rather confused broad general class of Undines, Hamburgs, Arcona, and the Frauenlob. . . .but whatever the reason, It was also enough to allow one of our arms manufacturers into a technology sharing agreement in Italy - the same Italy that had sent a Spy into our country. Another showing of the flag was a gunnery competition - an idea of the Kaiser's - which lasted quite a while- as the proverbial dust settled it was the _Arcona_ which had apparently won the cup. The people were in such a good mood - the tech agreement and cooperation with the Italians still fresh in mind, that it was rather understandable that there were not a lot of papers on the occupation of Albania - by Italy. Whatever the reason - A pair of battleships were put into building, under the class designation of the again, oddly named Schweitzer. As the clocks grew closer - so did the amount of money from taxation, seemingly things were _starting_ to settle down and seemingly a break from constant militarisation was in order- thus the recommendation for Railways across Germany were to be built. Thus - nearly a year after the new training programs began, in October of 1871 did I start to see my father again . . . the new coastal battery in Eastern Germany was completed . . . But the Russians? The Russians got friendly. Perhaps they needed cash? Perhaps they wanted to fund opposition to France? and create a counterweight? Whatever the reason, they had offered us a leap forward- The designs, and knowledge in order to build the next step in warship production. Designs for the rudimentary building of 12-inch Naval Guns. It would be the straw that broke the Camels back - the kettle that started to whistle- We would perhaps never know what exactly caused it- But- The French sent an Ultimatum - Germany made light of it, thought it was a bluff. . . surely they had learned since the last time? The answer, nary a few days later was - "FRANCE DECLARES WAR ON GERMANY!" The World was changed - and I would always remember these two things; A distant stare from my father, and his words all those months ago - "That was not a Peace- it was an Armistice for 20 years."

I've been playing RTW2 as Germany recently and I've gone to war with Italy and so far there have only been 2 real battles, both in the Red Sea. One was my 6,000 ton protected cruiser against a convoy escorted by 3 Bs and 8DDs. I kited the Bs, suppressed the DDs with my 6" fire, and broke into the center of the convoy of 13 ships and sank 9 before fleeing with light damage. Then last night I took 3 of my own Bs, a CA and the same CL as before plus 1x DD against another Italian convoy of 15 TRs with an escort of the same 3Bs and 4DDs. My CL found the Italian fleet and my Bs went after their Bs. I then sent my CA and CL into the convoy and slaughtered it. While that went on, my Bs were beating theirs up and one started to get pretty damaged, so I brought in my CA which successfully hit it with 2 torpedoes (which was amazing since it only has 1 submerged tube per side). I kept chasing the Italian Bs and beat another one to death with 11" gunfire. The 3rd and final B took medium damage and escaped because my Bs ran out of ammo. I also managed to sink 1 Italian DD, med damaged one, light damaged the other. My CL took light damage and one B took light damage XD That one CL has been really active want kicking ass. It also went on a coastal bombardment mission and there were almost no ships to stop it so I just parked point blank onto the bombardment target and went to fast speed until the land target was gone. Then we sailed home. RIP Italy lol.

Had an interesting battle today between my colonial cruiser, HMS Leander, armed with a dozen 4" guns and the French protected cruiser, Sfax armed with eight 7" guns, faster and half as heavy again as the 4000 ton British vessel. The fight went exactly as expected with the Sfax barely being damaged while Leander got ripped to bits, flooding, on fire, down to six knots. Her opponent clearly thought she was doomed and turned and sail off. Ive never seen the AI do that before. Somehow Leander put out the fires, stopped the flooding and made it to port.

@Katrina Paton I had one last night again as Germany but this time against France. I had 3 of my 4 Dreadnoughts (none super good, but ok... about 22-24k tons, 21knots, 11.5-12" belt, 2x ships with 5x2 13" -1Q guns laid out like KMS Kaiser, last one with 4x2 14" -1Q guns in AQXY layout). French had 1 Dreadnought (again, Kaiser layout of 5x2 13" guns) but low armor, plus like 6 pre-dreads. They also had like 4 CLs and a bunch of DDs. I had all 4 of my CAs, 2CLs and like 8 DDs. I had my battleships just hammering on the enemy dreadnought. My CAs trying to suppress the pre-dreads while my CLs and DDs kept their light forces at bay. I ended up pummeling the French Dread until I thought it was sinking for sure, so switched to trying to kill their pre-dreads. I got one pre-dread dead in the water and my DDs torpedoed the everliving out of it and it sank, but while I shifted my Dreads onto their pre-dreads, the French Dread got himself back underway and escaped with heavy damage. I was irritated.

The problem I found while playing the old one is that by the time you are finished designing and building battleships they are already obsolete. Cruisers are nearly as bad. @xt6wagon Жыл бұрын
Eh, cruisers I found never really go obsolete if you design them right. By right, I mean 4x 8", then as many 6" and 5" guns as you can. It's really gamey, and wouldn't work in real life anywhere near as well. The smaller guns are there to crit seek as accuracy is too low with the 8". So you poke holes in funnels and crit engine rooms. Speed drops, then the 8" goes to work. Fires too. It sadly won't let you make modern main gun layouts with heavy secondary guns in rtw2. But your old ancient design will still be viable in a pure combat setup as 20 6" secondaries is still a lovely thing vs a 9 6" gun modern light cruiser.

Snaller vessels like DDs are traditional more often only getting the dockyards first letter and a number like V-22 (Vulkan-Werft) B-33 (Blohm und Voss). Biger units like CAs and BB may get their names from Prussian Generals of the Napoleonic Wars, From houses of the German kingdoms, or names of the German states.

@randomcanuck6823 Жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure with RTW3, but how Colonial Service works in RTW2 is that it adds a 1.25 multiplier to any ships tonnage when put on foreign station (FS). For example, if I put a 4000t CL that has the colonial service option on FS it will then count as 5000 tons against the tonnage requirement.

I believe the two naval treaties were, first the London naval, and then Washington naval. I might be wrong though

I JUST Realized you don't have any Destroyers, only Corvettes. Oh nos.... unless we have to research those? Their are also Officers/Captains/Commanders (Kommandants?) Now, which is a neat little addition. The last tab on Right, Might want to check that one and see who is who and their Skill levels.

Its a bit before modern destroyers are a thing. Quick Google says 1894 for the first one. His corvettes aren't bad other than a bit slow.

@@xt6wagon I figured as such. Wasn't sure though.

Why do you care so much about getting 2" deck armour? It's the 1890s, engagement ranges are going to be so short that it's a non issue. And by the time guns improve enough to actually score deck hits, these ships should be scrapped already.
@TortugaPower Жыл бұрын
Deck hits have increased chance when your gun is firing beyond half its maximum range. Since gun range is poor, I guess we may get deck hits.
@frederiknielsen6038 Жыл бұрын
@@TortugaPower Okay, so it's a gameplay thing. Realistically fighting ranges in the 1890s were so short that shells would very rarely come in at an angle where deck pen was possible.
@karlitohomes Жыл бұрын
@@frederiknielsen6038 in RTW2 at least, the poor accuracy of early guns does indeed mean deck hits were pretty unlikely early on, at least in my own experience.
@frederiknielsen6038 Жыл бұрын
@@karlitohomes Thats my experience from RtW2 as well. Not having to worry about deck armour at least until the forst dreadnaughts are launched. And it always seemed resonable to me. Can't imagine deck hits being more common in the 1890s, where range is even shorter
