You can be flagged (warned) for non-combatability by the ref, for things like stalling too much, or excessively running away from your fighter. Get too many flags this way and you can be penalized one point. Korean karate, called "taekwondo" - strictly enforces this "non-combatability" rule a lot more than the "kumite" counterpart.

Running out of the ring on purpose in a karate match is also regarded as a non-combatible attitude and is generally not allowed. You will be warned once if you do - and if you do it again after being warned, you will lose one point.
