The full title of this meeting is: Ruling the Sephardic Atlantic - The Ascamot and the Organisation of Portuguese-Jewish Communities in the 17th and 18th Centuries
This lecture compares the regulations (Ascamot) of eight Sephardic congregations: Amsterdam, Recife, Hamburg, London, Curaçao, Bayonne, Suriname, and New York. We'll explore how these regulations fostered community cohesion and adapted to local challenges while maintaining unity. Discover the influence of the Congregation of Talmud Torah of Amsterdam and the unique aspects of each community, including the role of the Mahamad and the adaptation to distinct host environments.
