Hi I'm not sure how else I can contact you so I'll just enquire here. I'm very interested in Lithuanian castles and I'm wondering if any of the more demolished castles (Such as Gedimino Pilis or the Kaunas Castle) will ever be reconstructed, like how Trakai castle was reconstructed. I personally would love to see such castles in Lithuania being reconstructed. My Lithuanian isn't very good so I wasn't able to find the information online so I was wondering if you could help me out. Thank you very much.

There is a constant controversy over reconstruction. Some Lithuanians view the reconstruction as an important feat, a kind of "restoration of dignity" for a country whose symbols were destroyed (often by foreign powers). Yet others see the reconstruction as unauthentic, since no building has 100% of its plans (or images) surviving, making at least a part of every restoration a guesswork. Moreover, sometimes later buildings (already historic) would need to be destroyed for the recionstruction: e.g. to rebuild the Vilnius Palace of the Rulers a 19th century merchang house that stood on its ruins had to be destroyed (its facade was incorporated into the palace, but that reduced palace's authenticity). Such people prefer no reconstruction, or just a repair of what is partly surviving (but not rebuild the completely destroyed parts or buildings. There is also a question of money. In any case, not just the Trakai Castle but also the Palace of Rulers in Vilnius were reconstructed. There are constantly thoughts about reconstructting the Gedminas castle too (clearly is the most symbolically important castle of them all) but they are far from fruition. Moreover, due to landslides the hill is now smaller than it was when the castle stood there. By the way, more Grand Duchy of Lithuaia castles have been rebuilt in Belarus where the "rebuilding" idea is seemingly dominating.
