Great video and we are very similar in our smoker preferences. I had a KK for over 10 years and until the movers dropped it off the truck and rendered into fractional pieces. KK was easily the most versatile, efficient and hands down the best grill I've ever owned! Convenience = Pellet Grill, but smoke profile on the lower side. Yes, you can increase that with 3rd party accessories, but add some extra cost. I don't cook on gas - just me. Offset Cooker, my absolute favorite to smoke on. No doubt, the learning curve is high, but once you learn your cooker, life is good. My suggestion for new chefs, go with a Kamado style grill, you can cook anything and fine-tune you temperature management and cooking techniques. Finally, find an affordable offset cooker and work with it. For me, there is nothing like building a fire in the box, dialing in the temp and tending the fire. Yes, it is time consuming, but the reward is both therapeutic for me, and delicious for the family. Just my 2 cents!!!

I had a Coleman combination grill for the last decade - 3 burners gas on one side and charcoal grill on the other. It was great. But very bulky for a balcony. Also no longer available where I am. So now I went for flexibility. Got a 2 burner Napoleon gas grill with a side burner shelf which folds down. a Korean bbq griddle pan to go on top of that if more grill/griddle space is needed. Napoleon has a charcoal tray which can be used on top of the gas burners. I was skeptical - but it works. Gas burners light the lump and then you turn them off and it’s a charcoal grill. I also got a small kamado (13 inch) for smoking. So now it’s easier to move things around. In terms of propane tanks. Get two half size tanks instead of one full size. Or a full size one and then a small one. You’ll never run out of propane during a BBQ. just swap over and fill/exchange empty the next day. Thanks for the tips!!

I know you got a pretty nice collection of grills there. I think it's time you join the Griddle Nation and get a Griddle. BlackStone, Pitboss, don't matter. The Griddle is a great companion to a Grill or Smoker.
@RumandCook2 жыл бұрын
LOL I have a griddle insert for the Yoder. I actually put in a larger gas line so I can add the Lynx 30” griddle down the road. Only issue is that an offset just ate up all the room. 😀

I am kind of a traditionalist and prefer an offset. I have two and was lucky to find an older 1/4” thick steel one that was cheap and required only a good seasoning before using. They do take some extra work but often cook while doing outside chores so I am out there anyway and monitor the temperature on my mobile phone. I think they provide the best smoke flavor. When I am not using my offset, I just use my Weber grill with charcoal. Never really cared for cooking on a gas grill, but that’s just me.

Tough to beat the flavor of an offset. I like gas for quick stuff. Preheats fast and shuts down quick. 🍻

That's an amazing collection of grills. I have a coyote Bo Jackson Portable gas grill, which is a premium level grill made of full 316 stainless and with cast stainless burners under $500. Hits 900°. Works great for a small family and will become a camping grill after I upgrade. I also have a locally made offset. Looking to get a Weber summit kamado soon so I can smoke meat more, ever since my son was born it's difficult to carve out time to tend the fire all day. I started smoking on a $500 pellet grill, but after seeing burn back, controller malfunctions, and other issues, I can't bring a pellet grill home until I can afford one that I'm confident won't have issues, probably a Lonestar.

Hey there. I really enjoy your videos; I am a subscriber. For this video, I was surprised by your remarks about the BGE. I recently purchased mine (right before I subscribed to your channel) and did a lot of research on the BGE and KJ beforehand. It was fun researching the companies and products. I like to buy local, and both companies are based about 25 minutes from my hometown. Here are some key points that came to mind while watching that segment of your video: 1) Current BGE models (at least the large) do come with a spring for the lid. Possibly not as strong as the KJ spring, but it is there. I can't imagine anyone of grilling age having an issue raising the lid. Besides, isn't that part of the charm in using a sturdy piece of equipment? Such as the 1975. 2) A pizza attachment is also sold for the BGE (not through BGE - but who cares?). In fact a lot of the best accessories come from 3rd parties (Smokeware, Kick Ash, etc). 3) KJ possibly may lead innovation, but BGE has a more robust community of followers. (Eggtoberfest coming up) 4) You're giving credit to the Yoder for being made in America (agreed!); but you're not knocking the KJ for having it's core components manufactured in a country that antagonizes America. Just a few thoughts. Again enjoy your videos! Thank you for producing the content!!
@RumandCook2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. It’s been awhile since I looked at the BGE world. When I was in the market KJ was an easy choice for me based on features and there was no spring assist available then. I think Smokeware makes some great products and use a couple of them that will work with my KK. I don’t think you can go wrong in either direction. I’ve just always leaned towards KJ based on owning one and a buddy owning a BGE. It’s almost a Ford vs. Chevy thing 😀. You make some great points though! 🍻

Yep I will be doing some of these soon. Both make great food, but the convection on an offset makes amazing bark. You can’t get that on a Kamado. The smoke flavor is different as well. Seems to get deeper into the meat on an offset. I’ll have videos in April doing more of these. 🍻

Great video! I have had my Yoder YS640s for almost a year now. Replaced my gas grill and WSM and have not had any issue covering any type of meal. Any thoughts on the new Traeger timberline xl?
@RumandCook2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The XL is super pricey, and in the past Traeger's quality hasn't matched the price. They moved manufacturing to China years ago, I'd be very interested to know if it's made in China as well. It does have a 10 year warranty, which is impressive. It still only goes to 500 like the others in their line up. I'm not sure why they set that limitation. I personally could never justify a $3800 pellet grill, there are other "luxury" class pellet grills out there and I just can't see spending that kind of money on a pellet grill.
@phildickson95082 жыл бұрын
@@RumandCook I agree, I liked the fact that the Yoders are manufactured in the US. I am looking into taking some design ideas from the xl. I am going to try and modify my side shelf to custom fit an induction burner.

This might be a very abstract question but Im unhappy with the amount of smoke I get from my pellet grill but know that I dont have the space or patience for an offset. This has pushed me to a Kamado Joe. Is the flavor/smoke profile on your Kamado closer to your pellet or closer to the offset? If its a wash on the flavor and its just a matter of versatility I might stick with a pellet style smoker. Thanks for the video, very timely for me!
@RumandCook2 жыл бұрын
You’ll be happy with a KJ. You can control how much wood (smoke flavor) you put in to a cook. You can get much more into your meat, just be careful to burn it clean, and don’t add a ton of wood because you can over smoke.

@@RumandCook yeayea I know. My 1st offset was a POS $100 cheapest one I could find. Why'd I buy that I hear you ask? Because I wanted to test if I really want an offset. Then again, investing $1000+ on something only to find out it's not for me... different story. @@h.collier3544 I beg to differ. My first cost me round $100. Why? I wanted to see if offset was for me. If I had spent $1k+ on it, boy I would've felt stupid to find out that offset smoking is not my thing. I was ready to take the hit of $100 but eventually sold it to a friend for $30 and bought a better one. But yes, temp control on cheap pos offset is ... hard. To put it mildly.
@riverworm50872 жыл бұрын
Not a better gas grill on the market? Did you really say that? You need to have a look at the grills made by TEC. TEC held the patent on infra-red using ceramic burners on the bottom and when the patent for that expired (everyone else copied them) then TEC patented their new burners which use glass. Ceramic burners are only 65% infra-red heat whereas the new glass burners are 100% infra-red heat. No comparison! Ceramic burners simply dry out or burn the food IF you aren't on top of it, the glass burners are adjustable from 200f up to 900f - no other gas grill has that sort of range. Ceramic burner s range from 500f to 1,600f (no way to do low and slow) but like I say if you aren't on top of it you'll burn your food - and forget about doing THICK steaks on ceramic; TEC glass is the only way.
@RumandCook2 жыл бұрын
You are either a dealer or super passionate about TEC grills 🤣. I’m familiar with them and they make a great product. I’m still not spending $7k for 2 burners. The Lynx Trident burner goes between 300-1000 so it has the flexibility + I have 3 other conventional burners to use as needed. Everyone has their opinion and I stand by mine. I appreciate what you are saying though and again it’s a great product. Just wasn’t for me.
