He realizes that she’s upset with him and is trying to manipulate his way back into her pantaloons with the puppy-dog eyes routine and compliments. He’s not doing this because he just liggedy-wiggidy-loves her so dim-damn-darn much and is desperately trying to show her. He sees that she’s left him and took the status he had from being with her gave him and so he’s desperately trying (and failing) to cling to it.

Also in the book, Smokey tells Rusty “Even if Patty wasn’t your chick I’d still like her.” Seems that’s meant to imply that he’s trying to goad Rusty, or push his buttons(when he says that he’d still be interested in Patty even if she wasn’t Rusty’s girlfriend in the first place.) At least that’s what I’ve inferred from it.

I disagree. Rusty knew that he wasn't as smart as Smokey or the Motorcycle Boy. When his dad and the Motorcycle Boy are comparing Cassandra to the Greek Tragedy Rusty gets frustrated because he knows he's not smart enough to get the joke. Rusty's girl Patty also reassures him even though in her words he isn't "book smart." Rusty is tough and loyal but dumb as a box of rocks lol.

I don't think Smokey would be in charge of the gangs though. He may be smarter than Rusty-James but he isn't as tough and doesn't command respect. No one would follow him. He's just an annoying twerp who complains too much and thinks way too highly of himself. He's like that in the book as well.
