Tyson is Comfortably Top 5 to me. To be completely impartial you have to seperate his career into two parts 1985-1991 & 1995-2005. Tyson was 41-1 before his 4 and half years inactivity. During the years 19985-1991 he became The Youngest Heavyweight Champion in History. The First Heavyweight to Unify the belts from the WBC, WBA & IBF. He is the last Heavyweight that was P4P number 1. He beat 10 of the top 11 fighters during that time, the 11th being the lineal. He made 10 title defences. He beat the best fighters around that through time, espectially the internet age have been criminally underrated. Think about this Tyson Fury is 30-0 and is 32-33 years old. Tyson was 41-1 at 25 and had accomplished all of that. To overlook that is just plain wrong. If you can't be impartial you shouldn't comment. i'm more of a Holmes, Ali and Lennox fan so it isn't a fanboy here i'm just a person that has no agenda against him.

There's no other video I would have loved more from Rummy (probably). Mike Tyson was by far one of the best boxers if you see him in his prime. Such a vicious and ferocious man was destroyed by the likes of Don King and his associates. When he had Cus d Amato and Kevin Rooney by his side he was an unstoppable beast, not because he won every fight with em but the way he fought his opponents. Gladly Mike has overcome so many difficult situations in his life, and is finally able live happily.

Mike Tyson Is one of the most recognizable boxes of all time and is always on everybody’s list the boxers they like. He always made for an entertaining fight and a lot of people say they almost revered him as a god in his prime.
@thebteamm4 жыл бұрын
People really shit on Tyson for only beating "tomato cans" but as Rummy has said before, the division line-up during Tyson's reign wasn't anything he had control over. While he did have one of the fastest fall offs of any HW champ, he still showed off a tremendous amount of skill, prowess and success at such a young age. The win over Holmes is also discounted by fans and while Larry was obviously out of his prime physically, his technique and experience was able to carry him through the elite level and yet Tyson beat him relatively easily. There's more I could say and I trust I'll have to do so when defending my personal views to those who respond to this comment, all that I ask is that you actually give a decent argument and not waste my time.
@anthonyanderson93034 жыл бұрын
The issue with Holmes wasn't his age, it was that he was out of shape. He basically retired at that point and got lulled into that fight by Don King for the payday. And even then he didn't get a full training camp. The Holmes that fought Holyfield and Mercer later on he was in much better shape and was training full time. Still, Tyson was impressive against Larry.
@fiucik14 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, but... What piss me off, when people say, that if only Mike Tyson didn't fire Rooney... But that actually WAS in his control... There were many boxers, who changed trainers, and still performed great at an elite level. Holyfield for example. If only Mike didn't lose his focus, if only he trainded properly, if only this, if only that... But that's also very important in boxing, to stay mentally strong and hungry, to not let people like King ruined you. The division line-up during his reign you said, but what about after? Who's fault is that Holyfield faced his as late as 96'? Evanders? There were many great boxers, when Tyson was around and young(Holy, Bowe, Lewis, Foreman for example) and Mike either didn't face them, or got stopped by them... And when you look purely at his boxing skills, he wasn't flawless either. Even the so called "prime" Tyson. He really struggled with Quick Tillis, who wasn't an elite boxer, and actually wasn't as tall as some fighters Mike faced...
@jacobh71884 жыл бұрын
Still doesn't change the fact that he fought bums, regardless if it wasn't his fault or not. If Tyson's win over a 40 yo Holmes was impressive, then in your logic, Holme's win over a Parkinson's Ali (who was also nearly 40 years old) must of been "discounted" as well lol
@muder09894 жыл бұрын

90% of his opponents in the 80's where full blown tomato cans.. his record is online for all to see.. his first 27 figths where against cab drivers like lorenzo boyd 15 wins 5 losses.. mike jameson 21 wins 21 losses etc etc.. he then stepped up in his 28th fight and took on an inactive berbick who was never a great fighter and had already lost several fights, mike destroyed him in 2, Mike then won a 12 round desision against james smith who also had multiple losses (19 wins 5 losses at the time).. Mike then fought a washed up pinklon thomas who had sever well documented drug and alcohol problems and was coming off a loss to berbick, Mike then fought undefeated tony tucker over 12 rounds, tucker was probably the best he faced in the 80's.. mike then had 4 more fights (old holmes, lightheavyweight spinks, tony tubbs and carl williams) before being kod by james douglas in ten rounds.

A lot of people claim Tyson was "overrated," but he spent his prime-years in the slammer so it's hard to gauge how good he _could_ have been. We never got to see Tyson against Mercer, Morrison, Moorer, Bowe, McCall, or Foreman. Having some of those names on his resume would have gone a long-way. I think Riddick Bowe would have had his lunch, but the rest of those guys I think a *prime* Mike Tyson could have beaten. I think he would have easily beaten Buster Douglas in a rematch as well. There is no shame to losing to Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. Those are two of the greatest of all-time and they both lost to guys not even on Tyson's level. Lennox Lewis got put on his ass TWICE with guys not as good as Tyson. So I think the whole "overrated" deal is a misnomer. In his prime, a focused Mike Tyson was the most-dangerous fighter that ever stepped in the ring. Not-focused Tyson..............yeah he can be beat.

Awesome work Rummy. 1. Michael Spinks - (he was still the undefeated lineal champ and Tyson was recognized as the lineal champ after this) 2. Tony "TNT" Tucker - (IMHO Tony Tucker was the best heavyweight Tyson beat in his career. The version of Tucker that fought Tyson gives most heavyweights a tough. Unfortunately Tucker fail into the evil of coke and that would destroy the rest of Tucker's career) 3. Larry Holmes - (same premise as you Rummy, Mike Tyson was the only fighter with the speed and power to catch Holmes and this was the only time Holmes was stopped in his 30 year career) 4. Trevor Berbeck - (Berbeck was known to have a good chin and decent skills and Mike destroyed him with ease and this was Tyson's first title shot 4 months and some change after his 20th birthday) 5. Frank Bruno II - (there was talk of Bruno getting a rematch with Tyson in 1989 because Bruno had done better against Tyson than anyone predicted and at the time as a 15 year old I laughed and said it would be a waste of time. I must say I would've laughed even harder and probably called you every loser in the book if you'd told me after Tyson beat Bruno that first there would be a rematch, it would be 7 years later and Bruno would be the champion. I'm not sure how many people watching knew this was a rematch. Tyson looked devastating in this fight, destroying Bruno and winning back a portion of the heavyweight title)

Coming off of back-to-back losses to Holyfield, the commission voted in favor to restore Tyson's boxing license in Oct. 1998, after having his license rescinded by the NSAC more than a year prior. The fight with Botha was suppose to be a walk over for Tyson. Instead, Botha had his way with him for most of the 5 rounds, until Tyson shortened up his straight right and got the stoppage.

100% Accurate To Me, Couldn't find a single difference in my opinion. If Tyson Stayed Focused with Rooney throughout His career, I believe His Reign would have been a much more spectacular story/Legacy ! I believe that most would believe me that Tyson's Peek-a-boo style left him right after the Spinks fight where as, He was in His top form as a Champion. As soon as King, His serious sexual / Marriage troubles, Prison/rape conviction , drug use, depression, religion/racism influences, distracted Tyson from His Original Boxing style and Concentration and Confidence and Character. I mean lets face it, He lost those things after leaving Rooney. Boxing / Fighting more dirty when frustrated, Like a Street Brawler & Flat footed. That Bouncing Menace / Pep in His step of confidence and character was Gone, Gone with Cus... & Gone with Rooney. Everything about Tyson had changed except for that Physical power he had Dynamite in Both hands. One more thing I would like to respectively say: I think Mike Tyson Had the potential to be the Greatest of ALL TIME.

Not really he made his name off of some pretty average fighters, Tyson was never prepared for guys like Douglas, Holyfield and Lennox Lewis who trained to beat Tyson, since he was never fully tested we don't know how good he really was

5. Razor ruddock 2 4. Frank Bruno 2 3. Trevor B 2. Michael spinks 1. Tony tucker (really really underrated heavyweight at the time... could have give any HW trouble at that time)

The Tony Tubbs win was also a great performance. Gets overlooked because of Tubbs weight but he was a pretty skilled fighter.

terrible performance by mike. tubbs was boxing tysons ears off until he got caught with that big left hook.

I love how the naysayers dismiss a prime Tyson nowadays. The man was a machine back then.

VS Trevor Berbick (not only becoming champion but also gain revenge for Ali ) 1986

As always great work Rummy.As you say there are other fights that could have made your list. Tyson vs Ruddock II,vs Botha (great one-punch finish by Tyson) vs Thomas (great combination punching by Tyson ) , vs Tubbs (another great one-punch finish) and vs Biggs ( a clinic in cold-blooded destruction ). Apart from Muhammad Ali, Tyson has to be the most naturally gifted fighter in heavyweight history.

The difference between Holmes coming out of 2-year retirement with 4-5 weeks of preparation to fight Tyson and Holmes regularly training and fighting Mercer is significantly huge. Totally different fighters.

I feel his win over Andrew Golata deserves an honorable mention... Golata is very underrated and more dangerous than many of the opponents mentioned in the video

The sharpest, most explosive, most exciting Heavyweight ever to lace up the gloves. Love the guy. The one. The only. Iron Mike Tyson.

Look what you've started Rummy. Love him or hate him, in years to come when people talk about top heavyweights. Mike Tyson's name will always be on the tip of most people's lips.

Tyson who beat Berbick in ‘86 would have been a handful for any of the greats. Imagine if that Tyson that night would have fought the Holyfield from their first fight. Can only see one winner and that would be Tyson. He hadn’t lost and at age 20 was at his peak! Not sure even a “juiced” Holyfield would have lived with him.

Donovan "Razor" Ruddock made Mike Tyson dig deep and the two fights would go on to prove to everyone that he could take bombs while throwing bombs and come out on top. The Ruddock fights are my favourite Tyson wins. That was the most determined Tyson.

People underrate Mike's fight with Andrew Golota as well. During those years Golota was a killer, Mike not in his prime still managed to break him to the point Golota forfeited.

Mike was way stronger and had a lot more power in those years then he did in the 80's.. yet he wasn't as explosive or sharp.c] his punch power in the late 90's was off the charts.

Great video, Rummy. I would have thrown in the Marvis Frazier knockdown as well.
