This has been very useful, thank you James. Picked up my first barcoded parkrun this week. 46 minutes. The first kilometre is definitely the hardest. And I think there’s a reason for that - there's a sudden rush of 500+ bodies making good pace, and I found myself swept up, and try to try to keep up with the crowd, and don’t have the fitness to manage it, and get sore, discouraged, slowed right down in discomfort and soured the rest of the course. I'll try and remember the three things (for next time) - It’s my choice, and it will end. I’m working towards something I want. (fitness, fortitude and doing something I’ve never done before) and now, I know and understand the sensation. And maybe next week I’ll expect it.

Yes! I’ve always hesitated to eat before a run because I often feel nauseous mid-run if I do, but I’m going to try space it 2 hours before and see if I feel the benefits!

I just moved to an area in the USA that has several park runs. I'm looking forward to running them for time because the only 5k's I've been doing are at the end of a triathlon, and slower than what I can do alone.

I just ran a turkey day 5k in 32:31 😕 my best time 25 years ago was around 22 min. If I train hard this year can break 20 min in next years turkey day run?
