The guy in the ambulance is the security guard from the bank, who did have a heart attack. It's also hinted at that he is Lola's real father and he knows that, but she doesn't.

I believe she didn't know that in the first two timelines. But she's probably realized it by the third when she's in the Ambulance with him. I came to comment that, but you beat me to it.

@ When she calls out for her Dad during the final story as he's driving away. The guard comes out for his smoke break and responds to it. Almost like he'd been keeping a secret for years and subconsciously let it slip. There's also how she always greets her. It's like he's a deadbeat Dad trying to reconnect with his daughter. I caught these on my first viewing. Try while you look for these little things, in the back of your mind. You'll be amazed when it clicks.

Yes, definitely. They even seem to have cast the guard for a facial similarity to Lola, emphasized in straight on shots. Contrary to phillip, I believe he dotes on Lola from a distance, is genuinely concerned at her distress, but is maintaining distance and secrecy by agreement with the mother.

During the third sequence after the head-on car collision, a moped rider rear-ends the white BMW and lands on the windshield. This is the man who stole Lola's moped, so he gets his comeuppance in the end. Also, the writer/director composed the music and the singing you hear is Franka Potente, the actress who plays Lola. Such an amazing film that's also so incredibly '90s.

The supermarket that's being robbed was my local grocery store, it closed in 2022 and was demolished to make way for an apartment building (with grocery store on the ground floor, it opened 3 months ago). As usual in movies, the geographical continuity is out the window...Lola couldn't even drive her route in 20 minutes 😄. Thank you for your response. Nice to see that the film still works. The ‘superpower’ to shatter glass by screaming is surely a reference to ‘The Tin Drum’ (D 1980 - Oscar for best foreign film). In the film, the main character decides as a child (aged 3) to stop growing out of resentment towards society under National Socialism and sex affairs. He beats his belch drum and can also break glass with his screams. In its subtext, the film is an attentive and critical perspective on and in Germany/Berlin in the mid-1990s. Berlin had only been the capital of Germany for a few years (1991) and was thought to be the victor of history (capitalism/communism). Deutsche Bank (where the father works) and Mercedes Benz (what the main character ‘trades’) were international symbols of this system at the time. Time (=efficiency) was a German trademark. At the same time, you can see how many different lives (rich and poor) live side by side within 20 minutes in Berlin-Mitte. The characters are not drawn one-sidedly (which was the case in German cinema/TV at the time) but are dependent on external circumstances and their own decisions. The ‘other realities’ (butterfly effect) are also a little humility towards an ethos that only those who make an effective effort will succeed. The Chast is great because... OK. In the end it is a good film.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it back when it first released at a little art house theater on Capitol Hill in Seattle. When the movie was over, I was so pumped by the soundtrack that I walked across the street to an indie music store and bought it on CD. If you're looking for another mind-bending, one-of-a-kind, indie thriller, I'd suggest "Pi".

30:00 actually it does, but this has more to do with the fact that this takes place in Germany. Germany has VERY STRICT gun laws. Especially in a big city like Berlin in the 90s, reports of a gunshot would have police on your ass immediately. So if the homeless guy would've shot Manni to take the money, he would've been in custody in an hour at most. At least with a bank robbery, he can plan his possible ways of escaping etc.

I recommend the film that served as inspiration for this: “Blind Chance” by Krzysztof Kieslowski. A great drama, with a deep storyline that touches on attitudes toward the socialist police state in Poland. A story about how a thin line separates the rebel from the conformist.

Some suggestions for You to watch: - Arguably the most iconic and influential film of showing "alternative truths" of what happened: Rashomon (1950) directed by Akira Kurosawa. - A film showing the same event happening at the same location (a dance hall in Paris), but at different times between 1936 and 1983: Le Bal (1983) directed by Ettore Scola. - The film that leaves everybody speculating what actually happened: Mulholland Drive (2001) directed by recently passed David Lynch. - Apropos David Lynch - the TV series Twin Peaks is absolutely a must see thing. - Another must see TV series, and another superb German production located in Berlin: Babylon Berlin.

Regarding giving the Gun away to the homeless person - from a German perspective it makes a lot more sense - especially for the time it was filmed. You don't want to get caught with a weapon - so you want to get rid of it - and given the character of Manny, it was not "licensed" anyway. The homeless guy will probably sell it for money on the streets or keep it for self-defence. It is not the USA where literally everybody has to be expected to carry a gun and shoot around - here basically no one is openly carrying a gun unless you are a Cop or a Hunter in the wild - even being seen with a gun in public pretty much gave you a 5-Star-GTA-rating in Germany - 25 years ago. Nowadays things have changed a little, because there is much more (organized) crime in cities like Berlin - but you will still get in trouble when being caught carrying a gun usually.
