That's because this defense originated from Saban and Bill Belichick during their days in Cleveland when Bill was the head coach and Saban was the D-Coordinator. Remember they were playing high powered offenses in the AFC like Warren Moon and Houston oilers, Jim Kelly and Buffalo bills, Dan Marino, John Elway, Boomer Esiesan. They had to figure out how to play those teams without having elite DB's on the back end. That's when they figured out Zone/Match or Pattern Matching defense. It plays like Zone but with man principles after the routes are distributed/identified.

Love the video. Have you. Have you noticed that against trips, if the #3 runs a zig out, and the #2 runs a go or a corner, the safety gets tripped up and is slow to the #2 vertical and can sometimes give up one play touchdowns. Any way to prevent that from happening?

@@KingReggieMadden I run both depending on the situation but this only happens in palms. It to some degree happens with a flat route or an out route from the #3 also, but the zig is the most pronounced. What I do currently is just man the nickel on the #2 and live with giving up short completions of #3 goes out. Not ideal but otherwise I give up too many deep touchdowns from the #2 in trips. Same thing can happen in palms vs 2x2 sets to the #1 but it's not as bad as in trips

Cover 3 match or cover 3 buzz match can be used vs 2x2, 3x1,or 4x1 (3 trips recievers, and Rb on same side as trips)..Palms,quarters, etc turn into a zone drop defense vs 4x1...So you can mix in cover 3 match and quarters, palms etc vs 2x2 and 3 x 1, but I would use cover 3 match vs 4x1....If they have 4 recievers split out wide than all match coverage will turn into zone drop.

It’s not an end-all-be-all defence though it’s probably the most consistent coverage defence if you know the assignments. It’s a defence where your opponent needs to earn it by eliminating #1 and #2 reads forcing your opponent to use their brain which most don’t
