Big letdown. All we get is scene after scene of a child being creepy with dark ominous shots with haunted score then it cuts to another scene. I don’t mind slow burn horror movies as long as it comes to something other than repeating its self. It got old with these shots of the camera pulling back and on to the next scene.

The Babadook did it better. The mum kept making really silly choices. Like I get she has trauma but for as much as she seems to really care about her child, she does the most reckless stuff. Like who tries to cut their kids hair in the dark while the child is fighting? I dont care how much their head is bleeding, thats just stupid. It frustrated me. Also, it was so dark all the time. Theres mood lighting, and then theres missing half the movie cause you cant see it.

I didn't mind the pacing, I'm on the side where I think the pacing was good. But I couldn't stand the screenplay and writing. I feel like half the movie Snook's character is just saying "Mia? Mia! Mia, Mia! Mia? Mia" while the daughter just repeats "I want to see Joan, I want to see Joan, I want to see Joan". There was enough in the story there to keep me interested, but the screenplay completely took me out of any creepy tension the story builds.

I liked this less and less as it went on. It started off with heavy Babadook vibes then degraded into a predictable, poorly structured plot with circular dialogue, incomplete character arcs, and unmemorable performances (I think Sarah Snook is a fantastic actor but she didn't do much to help elevate the weak source material). Very disappointing as I like the film's premise and certain aspects such as the color palate, the distressing, uneasy atmosphere, and especially the audio & score. It could've been a good film if it had stronger writing.

Omg the movie was amazing! What are all you talking about? The rabbit represented guilt about the murder of Alice. She could not get rid of the rabbit just like the memories of the murder. She hurt Alice with a rabbit trap before killing her. Nd her father used to trap rabbits as pests and Alice would let them go. That's the whole rabbit meaning behind the movie. The the ending was amazing...finally realizing that she was having a psychotic episode at her old house and ending up killing her ex husband, her daughter, and might have even killed the mother because she was at the nursing home the night before all covered In dirt. But she definitely killed the husband and Mia because she was talking to her dead daughter at the end of the movie. Mia's eyes were weirdly wide open while asking her mother these questions and calling her a monster. And the whole night mias eyes stayed open until she slipped out of bed like a ghost and joined Alice in the after life.

The purpose of the rabbit could be that it brought about the possession of Mia. When she tried to drop it over the fence, the rabbit was not having it and it mark festered into a full blown out infection on Sara's hand (that murdered). Just too much symbolic stuff, wasn't mentioned that her father was coming back as a bird and did she not seem to hit a bird with her car. The music (sound?) that was supposed to be hunting by using didgeridoos was getting on my last nerve. The movie took too long and At the end Sara has probably killed every last one of her family members, including her mom (because worker left her alone there when she should not been there in the first place) because she was not escorted out the room, she had plenty of time to kill her mother.

The rabbit symbolized Alice, hence Mia wearing the rabbit mask.
@deniseoates7147
@deniseoates7147 Жыл бұрын
@@happytownesvanzandt4850 I watched it twice because I fell asleep on the first viewing: The opening of the movie is basically the ending of the movie aerial view of finding the character (same cloths at end) laying out after her murder craze by the water, but one could get confused and think it was a dream sequence, since the next clip is Sarah waking up. Some people might want to push back the supernatural aspect of the movie but not so fast. The death of the grandpa and Mia turning 7 seem to be the magic mix and then the appearance of the Bunny top it. The purpose of the rabbit could be that it came because Alice liked rabbits because the possession of Mia has started (she asked about Joan) had already started on their way home and took Sarah swirling down the rabbit hole. If we notice, there seem to be a storm brewing when Sarah pulled up outside their home was this actually letting us know thing are not right. The rabbit (is like familiar? (like black cat for witches)) met Mia (now Alice) there and the garage door open to all the stuff stored there so Sarah has to deal with the past. Apparently, Sarah has had mental problems because Peter at the birthday party question Sarah with a concern of if she was mentally ok and he looked concerned like he had bad experience of her not being in a good place. It was crazy that Sarah would think that agreement of having one child would go outside their divorce. How is tragic for Alice (slowly taken over Mia) to relive being beaten when the (rather large) 3 year old had hit her on the head. Me personally did not feel that Sarah overacted on that she was protecting her own, because it seem that kid's mom Denise was not addressing it (how he still got another hit in). So, Sarah has been blocking communication to Mia from the grandma (so there hate there), so she burns the birthday card (sure not the first). Then she tries to get rid of something else Mia loves, when she tried to drop Rabbit over the fence, it was not having it and left it mark to festered into a full blown out infection on Sara's hand (that murdered). Alice watch from balcony, if it was Mia she would of screamed out at her mother but Alice knew the bunny could fend for itself. Next morning bunny mask on at this time Mia became unaffectionate toward mom because Joan is mummy to her. If I am catching it right, it seems that Sarah grew up with only her dad. Was it because Joan had a breakdown after Alice went missing or she suspect Sarah in having a hand in it and dad left with child because Joan was accusing Sarah? Mia start showing signs of physical abuse bleeding head or nose, even peeing in bed. Did anyone else notice there was always like a storm brewing outside their home and at beach scene also wind picked up once they got to the childhood house? Artwork on back of Mia work and in library book, was that Sarah or Alice (box of blackness with a bunny and person and then an empty box at the end). Just too much symbolic stuff, wasn't it mentioned that her father was coming back as a bird and did she not seem to hit a bird with her car on the way to see Joan. Not sure why Sarah decides to show a placard dedicated to Alice after Mia looking over and talking about a long ways down. It did not make sense that the storyteller in this movie try to make every dark spot a place where Alice is weeping because if Alice is in possession of Mia, this would not be true and those dark shadows had nothing to do with Alice's hiding spaces. Sarah calling Peter about the situation, surprised that he did not show up with Denise (Ms. Know it all). Sarah leave Mia in the house alone with unlock doors and goes to some far off shed to take a box in the middle of the night to store was another waste of our time moment, with the second visit to Joan with Mia, the whole go and seek of Mia when the picture were back on the wall. So for Peter to have a clue and to be so concern he sure took his own time to show up there. The music (sound?) that was supposed to be hunting by using didgeridoos was getting on my last nerve, like a humming in one's ears. The movie took too long (I fell asleep on some of it) and at the end Sara showing up at the nursing facility has probably already killed every last one of her family members, including now her mom (because worker left her alone there when she should not been there in the first place) because she was not escorted out the room, she had plenty of time to kill her mother. If you notice when Sarah climbs into bed with her filthy cloths still on Mia never moves her mouth to talk, what we are hearing is Alice voice and the dad not acknowledging any sound or movement coming into the room. He one would have taken Mia out of there because of the scissor injuries (even if he did not know it was an actual attack by Sarah) or he would have been laying with Mia himself to comfort and protect his baby but both were already dead by the time Sarah made her last visit to her mom's room. It stupid mind game for them to think that a man is not going to notice the house has been trashed and his daughter is in shock and I am a married man but I going to spend the night on the tiny tiny cot in my underwear that almost on the floor while my ex is walking around dirty hands in filthy/wet/stain garments out of her mind and left the house at night. I think what we are hearing is in Sarah mind of breathing coming into the room. His body look manipulated on the bed next morning because let me tell you, you are not going to suffocate a grown man (or most women) with a pillow while they laying on their stomach (unless she drugged him or bash his head in). And the arms would not end up down that way in a struggle to breath or protect life and been that neat (sheets were not even messed up, bed in same position, mattress still on frame, etc). So how did she kill them? Because Sarah is actually talking out loud in the room while laying with Mia's body (no fear that Peter will hear as she makes a confession because he dead), Alice's response is in Sarah's mind. Mia's spirit is actually pulled from underneath Sarah's arm because the child body positioning never changed from when her mom laid down beside her the night before and what Sarah witnessing thru window is symbolic of Mia spirit being led away by Alice. Afterward Sarah is just wondering around out there until she either dies or someone come looking for Peter or discovers Joan is dead. We now are back at the opening of the movie where she is laying by the water on the ground with what seem as the same clothes at end of move.

The second time I finally realized that the mom had a psychotic episode and killed the father of her daughter and killed her daughter Mia at the end. The mom was hallucinating nd hearing things that really weren't there most of the movie. At the end when the mom and dad are frantically looking for Mia in the woods and finally finds her, I belive that she had already killed the father and Mia by that time. That whole scene she just made up in her head because it's the way she wished things played out.

I thought this movie was great, so confused by all the reviewers saying it sucked. It has a slow burn and is much more psychological than a jumpscare. I like that the ending is kind of open ended: did the ghost of Alice actually walk Mia off the ledge or did Sarah kill her daughter and ex-husband in a blackout (the man laying in the bed face down). The creepiest part for me was one tiny part where Sara turned around and she looked like she was possessed. And the rabbit had cleat symbolism in two ways: guilt; and the sister alice herself who seemed to be resurfacing. I think everyone saying this sucked just don't like slowburn movies without a bunch of jumpscares and can't understand subtlety.

You’re not being too negative, you just didn’t get it. The film is seen through the eyes of mother Joan’s dementia, coupled with Snooks characters guilt at killing her sister when she was the same age as her own daughter. It’s a breakdown in every sense. I personally loved it.
