I don't think it was a fear of commitment I think they both married or in her case, attempted to marry the wrong people. Sometimes people think they're in love and they aren't! They mistake attraction and lust for love. They have fun and good times with someone and think they'll be happy with them but then they realize momentary fun/happiness isn't the same as lifelong happiness. I think a lot of people make these mistakes especially when they're young.

He is a musician and car mechanic. Donal Logue as Father Brian Norris, the second groom Maggie leaves at the altar. He later became a priest. Reg Rogers as George "Bug Guy" Swilling, the third groom Maggie leaves at the altar. Bob was attempt four and Ike would be five. I guess fourth then because she didn't make it to the actual wedding with Bob.

The bottom-line is that's it's a runaway title but not a runaway film.
