Thanks folks for advancing the technology of stopping runaways by moving past the gravel pit. I remember when the first ramps were installed in North Carolina. Truckers were thankful beyond description. Hurtling down a mountain at breakneck speeds without brakes is likely an exciting event. Too many didn't live to tell about it.

As. Truck drive that owned a truck that was put into a gravel bed by a driver, this system looks great. The gravel bed tore 26th truck up to the point of total loss. This system looks like if it makes only cosmetic damage that is repairable. The gravel system sent my driver rocketing into the room causing major bodily injuries. This on the other hand looks safer. I have just found out that runaway truck lanes are a thing, so this is not a developed thought. It seems like an air traffic control equivalent might need to schedule trucks if 4 hours are required to reset the netting for the next brake failure emergency. I'm sure other problems or driver error causes runaway trucks so while it is a wonderful system... Maybe trucks are tracked and scheduled already, what do I know? I learned something new today. Mind. I grew up in northern Ohio, where a hill is any change in road height more than 3 feet over a half mile. It's pretty flat there. knew nothing about hill-induced brake failure, runaway truck ramps or any of this until I stumbled onto this video and now the random info nerd in me is mesmerized when he should be in bed.

If a truck's brakes have failed, there is no logic staying in the slow lane or having slow vehicles blocking the truck's access to it as it approaches... It's called a "slow" lane for a reason, much like a truck/vehicle suffering brakes failure, is called a "runaway" for the opposite reason. I actually found this video, after watching a video of a truck using a gravel ramp which was connected to a slow lane. In that particular video, it actually became surprisingly clear that the driver of the runaway vehicle often has to be "lucky" with timing, in order to safely be able to get back into the slow lane between slower vehicles that were in its way, to be able to actually even use/access the gravel ramp at all. At least when you see a truck barreling down the hill behind you in the fast lane (hopefully with hazards and flashing headlights to get your attention), you'd realise pretty quickly it's in fact in distress and get out of its way asap... People in the slow lane are just going to think "Go around buddy", instead of clearing the path... Just an observation.

oopth But think about it..... why on the right and not left? It's like editing a huge paragraph in the middle of an essay written in ink. There's lots of two way highways so it would be inconvenient and dangerous to implant a runaway zone on the left side. If the highway isn't newly built or if it's on a steep mountain, they wont risk builing it in between the lanes rather than adding it to the right side. Idk if I make sense, cuz visual things always clear things up for me- which is why Im watching this video about how Runaways work. But back to that essay, either you start all over, or you write it in the right margin and draw attention to it. This is without using whiteout or anything, because like I said, it's inconvenient and dangerous to fix up a steep mountain two way highway. Anyways, Im not trying to argue or anything. I just wanted to give a reason as to why there's typically more runaways on the right side than the left. (at least where I live).

Where that runaway ramp is there is a rock face on the on the right side of the hwy. Hwy 11 makes a left hand turn 3 lights past the ramp so most trucks would want to be in the left lane coming down the hill instead of changing lanes in the city. At the top of the hill before you even start down there are signs saying all trucks must use left lane. And they get fined for going down the hill in the right lane. So truck won't have to try and cross a traffic lane to get to the ramp

In bc salmon pass 18%grade 21miles or kootenai 18 to 22% for 14miles all ramps on opposite side of road we know how that would turn out yup cars passing you and oncoming cars no chance of using ramp I watch a guy die he tried but too many cars coming he flew 17000ft to his death below and on salmon the final ramp goes across#3 at the stop if you make it across traffic and blow thru the ramp a pile of dirt it's over long fucking way down

Am I wrong in thinking it would be nice to have some kind thinish modern material for a 'bumper' type effect, on both sides of the Concrete walls (in between each set of netting...so as to keep the truck's cab from breaking apart..as well as keeping the trucks from impacting the walls so hard that the cab might come apart and the engine gets any kind of hit? Might help keep the drivers from hitting to hard on steering wheel...or seat belt breaking and driver goes through the windshield? Meaning , yes there's 7 nets but travelling at high speeds still ..drivers could suddenly have more loss of control...forcing more of an impact with those concrete walls..or other mechanical failures could happen...making keeping truck in forward mode almost impossible for the driver.

So, out of curiosity, wouldn't it make more sense to combine both this set up with sand(less damage from anything thrown up)? I understand that it would still likely freeze in winter, but have 2-3ft deep sand for the first 150-200ft and spread the lines out a bit. Common sense tells me, that that would make the runaway lane reset faster and cheaper, as well as do less damage to the truck.

I would also like to add, what happens if a truck carrying an oversized load has brake failure? say the truck weighs in at 100,000lbs or even manages to reach a speed of 90-120 mph? That system isn't designed to stop that kind of weight or speed.

Oil came out when that happens the soil be it sand in this case would become contaminated and like gravel would need more time to clean out and refill. Its still time consuming and thus cost prohibitive.

I was a commercial truker for many years, and always hated when had a full load & HAVING TO CLIMB HILLS that really slow me down delaying while needed to use the frk'n toilet. Have any engineer calculated how much distance is needed to stop a fully loaded truck on an inclined ramp? Now to prevent from rolling backwards have the side walls stepped for the driver to steer into the one closest to the point of back roll. If a runaway rig's driver was able to take in the ramp it should be able to back roll into the Wall's step corner, or maybe an additional Anker system implementation. How about triangular wheel shocks comming up from the ground activated by sensors like the ones used on automatic gates? This nettings on video are ridiculous.

wonder what the reset cost is? I've heard the traditional rock beds are very expensive to reset and destroy the vehicle, making the driver hesitate to use it. It looks to me like the vehicle damage was relatively minor in this system.

From my sketchy memory the gates in WY cost approximately $10,000 to replace (each). So up to $70,000 if you use all of the gates. Reset time is less than the gravel bed. All of the vehicles in WY have been able to be driven off the mountain as well. The insurance companies are happy to pay the reset costs as a fatal accident costs much more. There are still fatalities on the road for those trucks that chose not to use the system.

If space permits, I would think a gravel bed would be better and result in less damage and may even be less costly and time consuming to return it to operational status. Admittedly, I'm not an engineer in this area. The arrestor type is better than nothing at tall, but a 4-5 hr reset time raises the cost and from this video, damage. Once the truck was captured by the arrestor cables, steering control was lost because the loaded trailer is trying to continue its forward momentum. There's no arresting capability for the tandems in a cable type system. I can see where a jackknifed rig could result. With gravel, the tandems also encounter resistance and help reduce stopping distance but steering control is also reduced.

If this is a safety film, and it is why did the driver at 9:56 jump from the cab of his truck to the ground? He could have easily injured his back or broken a leg. This truck driver should have turned around and used the three-point system (Two hands one foot or two feet one hand) when exiting the cab of his truck. Too many drivers have been injured jumping out of their trucks.

Simon, I understand the pessimism. However in colder environments the gravel wasn't working and there were actually some fatalities. The reason for the gravel not working is because of freeze/thaw. The snow would melt underneath then freeze the gravel and it wouldn't slow the truck adequately. Also for gravel you need a longer runway which isn't feasible on some mountain passes.

Gravel system tossed that truck which used it into the wall as well and since its Gravel and thus porous the fluids would be coated all over the gravel which some of it got tossed into the roadway. So gravel that got contaminated would have to be removed and cleaned or replaced. More time consuming and takes up too much room not giving enough response time.

How would like going the other way when someone used this and wound up with a 2 inch gravel stone i your windshield? Yeah they do not use less than 2 inch stone in those rock ones, so they do more damage than you see and if you watch the gravel test it also tosses the control of the truck to one side not to mention the bouncing it did. Also look up "box truck getting flipped on runaway" when using said gravel ramp. And yes snow turning to water and freezes up where it snows and rains even if an area it gets cold enough to freeze, gravel becomes SOLID.

Try building a RUBBER PIT, where a pit filled with tire BEEDS used to stop a fully loaded truck... The further the truck goes into the pit the deeper it plunges into the pit... where a cable winch is used to pull out the RIG... safer and less damage to a Truck...

Other options (e.g.: gravel bed) don't work in winter months and don't give enough time for drivers to know they have brake problem in that hill. What's not to understand?

This is bad design because all the stopping force is applied at the very front of the vehicle. If the load isn’t perfectly strapped down it could be sent flying into the driver cab due to inertia. The river rock runaway ramps are better since the stopping force is spread across all axles.

Very interesting technology, but looks expensive and is awful hard on the truck, Couldn't you just build a shelter over the gravel? IE a covered Bridge. So a large barn or shed that would keep the gravel dry and keep the snow out would allow a traditional sand/gravel/rock ramp to work year round. It would also keep rocks from flying out. Pricing out large metal buildings is real easy (barns and airplane hangers are real common.) Basically a pole shed. It would of course need sides for blowing snow, but then as long as the rock is dry, it would work.

Years ago before we had the catch net system put in there was alot of run away trucks cars and RVs one RV came all the to Buffalo and crashed into a mall killed all the people in it

what would happen if a normal car was to use this? i would assume it would stop the car almost instantly as it weighs a lot less and therefore would cause injuries.

The runaway truck ramp multiplies the force the longer the vehicle goes down the ramp with the multiple fences. You're right that it would stop the car quicker however not to the point like a concrete well. The passengers would be just fine. A 4,500-pound vehicle hitting a 30' wide net at a speed of 62 mph will stop in approximately 83' with an average deceleration of approximately 1.6 g's.
