The first verse is sung out to God “Today a thousand years of strained affection and prayer- out beyond ideas of “right and wrong is a field”… will I meet You there?” The last verse is God’s response- ““In case your plan falls through… to mispronounce MY name- To curse “You Don’t Know Who” And bow before the same… I’ll meet you there.”

The part about the field comes from the works of Rumi, an islamic poet who lived in the 1200s. One of his poems reads "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’ doesn’t make any sense." The poetry makes sense given some of the themes of the song which draw parallels between Christianity and Islam, most clear in those final lines you mention ("to curse you-dont-know-who, and bow before the same"). I'm torn on the subject of the "you" in both instances of "i'll meet you there." I think the Rumi reference at the start almost certainly refers to those who follow a different faith than islam (given the crusades of the 1200s, christians are a likely option). But the rest of the last stanza is clearly spoken by god ("to mispronounce MY name"). Perhaps the hope is to meet those of other faiths "out beyond ideas of right and wrong" but instead, one finds god there. i.e.: Rumi to christians: "If I lay aside our differences, will you do the same? Will I meet you there?" God to Rumi: "If you lay aside your differences, "I'LL meet you there." In a way, that would speak to the legitimacy of laying aside differences, and the ignorance in focusing on the minute disagreements between different faiths.

I love how when the police figures take the guitarist’s younger self away, he sees that from the stage, understands what’s about to happen to him, and decides to go out rocking. And the way Aaron screams into the mic, my goodness!
@chadyoder40413 жыл бұрын
It’s a play off Back To The Future, so that isn’t his younger self. That’s his father, on the night his parents were supposed to fall in love. Without his parents, he and Aaron do not exist, if he and Aaron do not exist, the band doesn’t exist.
@Riaining710 ай бұрын
@@chadyoder4041 I think it's actually 'deeper' than this. The mice are a reference to torture schemes of... the ww2 soviet union? nazi germany? They used them to torture and kill their victims in slow and agonizing ways, I don't think I'm going to elaborate for all of you, but it's truly horrible. "At the bottom of a made up ocean" perhaps reference to BBC Blue Planet II, Mike deGruy in his discovery of an "ocean under the ocean", featured in the "Brine Pool" discovery at extreme depths. Mike deGruy died in a suspicious helicopter crash in Australia shortly after. [They] don't want you to know, or consider what's under the ocean. [They] can't have people willing to think outside 'the box'. Props to this band for multiple levels of reveal, if indeed this is part of their purpose for writing this song. Truly excellent work on many levels. Great artists.

For anyone confused the video is combining 1984 and back to the Future. There are many references in the song about 1984, most notably with sending the rats. It could also be argued that the references in the album and song of not existing or not being sure who you are or what makes you are represented by the people disappearing.
