These videos are EXCELLENT!!! My mother always played The B-52's when me and my sisters were little, we grew up on this stuff. How many other kids in the 70's had mothers that came home from B-52's concerts with their beehives on the side of their head from dancing so much and having a good time??? We did!

It's amazing how far ahead of their time they were. 1978!! ....Disco was still full blast at that time. They ust have been considered weirdos..I love it. I still play this stuff and enjoy it!!! Great post

This was before the band hit it big. Love the really raw sound here. The B-52's first two albums are their best material. I have hot heard any of their material past that.

Wow!, It's pretty whack to think that Kate Pierson was already 30 yrs old when they did this gig., but you should SEE HER TODAY at age 66..WHOA.. she is still HOT as hell. The B-fer's was one of the reasons I left Detroit in 1981...heading to God knows where,, (actually, Miami, FL.) and along the way, stopped off in Athens to wistfully imagine running into them on the streets of Athens, only to find out they had just played their Hometown a few nights earlier. This vid is a great (audio wise) recording. Thanx kmils74

funny to think that this underground, ( at the time ) ...beats almost over 95% of everything that is considered mainstream pop nowadays. So raw....so powerful and at the same time very simple and minimalistic. Hot lava and devil in my car ... just blew my mind off...first time l heard.

That's the thing. These guys didn't really break big nationally til the 80's so everyone thinks of them as being younger than they are, but these guys are as old as like the guys in Led Zeppelin or that era. I mean Kate was born in 1948 just to put things in perspective. Hellava group though. Rocks it as hard as ever.

That’s an amazing point that blows my mind. It took five or six years before they were recognized, and another decade before they received worldwide mainstream success. To put that into perspective Paul McCartney was 28 when the Beatles broke up. That’s insane!

Good to hear the girls singing improved over the years :) These vids are pretty cool. I'm surprised at how serious they are between songs... it's very much like they are there to perform the songs, and not have fun at the same time. lacking spontaneity even.

Ricky Wilson's guitar work amazes me, considering that he played it with the two middle strings missing. I'm curious as to how he tuned the remaining four strings. Does anyone out there know?

I believe these are clips from University of Georgia archives. Some guitar experts below explain how Ricky modified his guitar to create the surf sound, precursor to grunge. The death of Ricky Wilson to AIDS in 1985 was a great loss to the B's but rock gained so much.

Ricky was an amazing guitarist but IMHO he didn't spawn grunge. Sure, The B-52's influenced Kurt Cobain but I think The Wipers were a much bigger influence. Listen to any of their songs, even from their first album (From 1980) And I'm sure you'll agree.

Thanks for the help. Just curious how did you get the information? Also, do you know the gauge of each string? Tuning down might cause strings to be too loose.
