Just wanted to say that Paperblanks does fancy journals and sell for $30-40, so you'd be pricing your fancy sketchbooks very fairly!

In regards to the sketchbook, I’d rather pay a more premium price for a premium sketchbook. It beats paying big $$ on a gamble, and ending up with a sketchbook that isn’t high quality. But I’m a paper snob, so... LOL

In the last few years I used a sketchbook that costs around 16 usd, it was a really nice, thick sketcbook. The papers were a little more on the tan side, but still very light, and the thickness was right in the middle. Also lays flat nicely. I really liked that sketchbook. But now I found another one that is cheaper, around 11 usd. It has 190gsm paper (less pages than the other one though), really thick paper, I love it :D I'll definitely order more of it later. Paper quality matters a lot to me too, so if the sketchbook is really good, I'm willing to pay the price.

When you undersell yourself, you rob yourself of your future. I wish more artists would realize that
@namiyakou
@namiyakou 3 жыл бұрын
True, but sadly it's all a cycle... the artist market is so over saturated, the only way to charge any good prices is if you have a following already and a wide reach. If I didn't at least sort of match other people's prices, I'd make zero sales because I am not very well known. Plus it's so hurtful to artists that a lot of stuff can be bought from China for incredibly cheap, and lots of people don't really care whether their item is cheaply made in China, or made with love by an actual artist.
@NeccoWecco
@NeccoWecco 3 жыл бұрын
@@namiyakou I think it really depends on where you are advertising. I do not have a large following and I make good money for my art by doing custom commissions. There are people who try to undercut me, but my clients come to me anyway for better quality work. Sometimes your portfolio speaks for itself amongst the competition 💖 Good luck!

@@bookwormbon482 Anyone's gov will find out who and who isn't paying VAT/whatever taxes. I would not want to chance it. A fine sounds like it would probably be 10x more than what the actual VAT is owed.

i dont think you realize how appealing having 2 different kinds of paper colors makes the sketchbooks. it makes it to where you can actually justify getting both designs, because youre getting a different effect with the different paper colors. it definitely made me want to buy both sketchbooks for sure!

I find you have to be SUPER popular to order more than 100 pins. Mine never sell out that fast, they do sell out eventually, but not like immediately haha. But people who order 50 pins, nope, It's barely a difference to order 50 vs 100 so it's better to just order 100 and slowly sell the excess!

Australia also has a GST 10% and I've noticed if I buy from overseas (even on Aussie Ebay) most are collecting the 10% gst ... even buying digital patterns from the USA for my embroidery machine adds the gst ... and Patreon even takes 10% from me for a monthly pledge of $1 .. so maybe ask about selling to Australia too .

With regards to the uk VAT thing, From Brexit itself, We in the uk are 100% getting charged VAT from the government before receiving goods from abroad i.e Royal Mail, Parcel force (which ever courier) will send a notification to say we need to pay customs/duty on a parcel for x y z, I'm in a discord with a lot of other small businesses across the globe who've sent to the uk and haven't mentioned about them having to add the tax themselves. Not 100% if anyone will follow suit but the government have only done this because we're no longer part of the EU.

The issue of buying from Chinese manufacturers is such a tricky one. I wish there were global transparency laws where companies had to make salary and conditions information publically available (and that goes for everywhere, not just China) because while you obviously don't want to support manufacturers with very shady and unfair practices, there are a lot of Chinese companies providing a fair living for their staff (and in fact who might be the only employer or the major employer of an area), who absolutely deserve support. Right now it's just impossible to tell though.

23:20 I guess that you do not sell to Norwegians, then. If the seller does not do the work with collectian taxes to the Norwegian state + a little fee, hopefully proportional, for themselves, the Norwegian postal service will do the job and charge a large, and often inproportial, fee for it. Things often triple in price, with both the fee and a small tax to the State, so we often stear away from foreign stores.

Couldn't agree more with the part when you talked about motivation to work. I illustrate books and if I have a project and set amount of illos to do in a day, no trick will help if I'm slacking off. The work won't magically appear at the last day. I may do some mindless colour blocking on days when I feel low, but progress is made nonetheless. Self-discipline is probably the no1 thing to learn or adapt when pursuing any profession, especially your own business, freelance and art in general.

I understand the whole adding in labor costs. I am trying to start a small candle business, and I absolutely love candles and love making them, but I always forget about my own labor, and feel like I'm underpricing them. But I feel like if I calculate that in no one would want it. Also, I don't know if you've said this in another video, but I was wondering if you were planning on turning any of your other prints into diamond paintings, I think "hey guys" and "lac" would be amazing as diamond paintings!!

I saw a product advertised on TikTok that was a tape dispenser that had a stamp under the adhesive part to have “custom” tape! As you roll the dispenser across the package, the logo gets stamped on the underside. Unfortunately, it was plastic tape but perhaps in the future they’ll come out with a dispenser that allows paper tapes to be stamped! It was a lot cheaper than a dispenser that comes custom made, and was still super cute! I forgot to take a screenshot of the name and I can’t for the life of me remember, but your business immediately came to mind!

I think, as a Uk viewer and buyer, I would rather wait for there to be a work around with the Vat laws than you have to pay a fine and have potential beef with the UK government. You might be able to lower the price of the sketchbook a bit by decreasing the number of pages. Usually, sketchbooks with higher quality papers will have fewer number pages anyways. And some people like 20-30 sheet sketchbooks because they are less intimidating. Just a thought. Considering, the embroidery, hardcover and the fact that it's not mass produced but made by Baylee Jae, I'm sure you will be able to sell them all even if you have to up the price!

I'm American and I have worked in multiple jobs. I was only ever paid minimum wage once and it was my first job and to be honest, all I really did was sit at a desk and make made sure the customers were doing well (an extremely easy job for an extremely small company) I never was paid minimum wage in any other job. I've worked fast food, a warehouse, and a couple more places. It is really weird to me that the American minimum wage is even so low, however, I don't think it needs to be raised either. Usually, if you're being paid that low there is something illegal going on or it's a really small business.

That's why I could never be self-employed. I am disciplined enough to earn money as long as others bear the greatest responsibility and I have my regular working hours. But I could never be self-disciplined enough to do so much stuff and more stuff and ... to have to do even more stuff on my own and then always have to worry if I will earn enough money in the end,whether enough people will like my product next month, ect. I enjoy watching you and it all looks so easy and lari-fari, but in reality it takes sooo~ much work and investment. I bet few people would be upset if you raised prices so you could have more free time. You have built up a large following and selling below value is never good.

I'd love to have my own business and be self-employed but I don't think I have enough mental energy and self-discipline to be that involved with so much and keep up with everything ie. regulating a following, staying active on social media, managing multiple social media accounts, designing, creating products, product quality, shipping, advertising, taxes, copyright, customer service.. it's overwhelming to even think about it all, especially when you're on your own and never done it before. How do people do all that and have time for themselves??

I had to restrict shipping to the UK this year too. Thing is I *APPLIED* to collect and remit VAT, but something on the form went wrong and they got my business name wrong, but then never reached out to approve or deny my application so it's just been sitting in limbo for three months. About that VAT situation with UK. If anyone from government is reading this, I have an idea :D The best thing is of course do it as it was and as everyone else does - collect VAT at receiver country (UK) customs. Why UK thinks it's so special that every business in other countries needs to pay them VAT? It's almost like they need to registrate in UK as a VAT tax payer. The next best thing maybe would be that - the sellers can collect tax from the buyers, but pay them to their own government, and then their government can deal with UK. It would just be 1 additional line in already existing VAT tax report "collected tax for UK". But then again - UK needs to arrange this with every single country. Which is...stupid? Then really after some time the tax report could consist of 100 more lines like this - with most major countries in it. Why not add Russia, China, Australia too? :D I think that there is more to this, this whole thing does not make sense at all. I hope to hear what your accountant thinks :D

Also regarding the UK VAT dilemma, the thing that pisses me off the most is that we did something similar in Australia but we didn't screw all the small businesses with how we did it. So the way Australia did it was that if you make enough sales to Australians to go over the GST threshold ($75K AUD) you have to remit tax and pay it to our government. It was done this way to stop dodgy places setting up their storefronts outside of Australia and selling to Australians without collecting tax. This meant that small artists and small businesses that are international do not have to do ANYTHING unless they sell over $75K worth of products to Australia, and if they are selling that much to Australia alone as an international business they can afford to hire an accountant and pay our GST like the rest of us earning over $75K do. The way the UK has done it is ridiculous and makes no sense (hoping Europe has planned this better when they do it in July). It doesn't benefit small businesses in the UK because they now can't buy from a lot of places outside the UK, I honestly do not understand why they didn't do it the way we did it and make it so you only have to collect VAT if you are earning over the UK tax threshold. Instead they expect an artist who might make 5 sales a year to the UK to figure out how to register for VAT, get an EORI number, charge and remit the tax, and then figure out where to pay it. I have even contacted international tax specialists to try and get them to help me (I sold enough to the UK for this to be a significant cut to my earnings) and no one will get back to me. The furthest I've seen people get is registering for VAT and getting the number, but no one seems to be able to tell them where they pay the remitted tax. UK government has tiny brain and enjoys making everyone's lives harder.

Brexit has completely screwed up stuff over here, especially for Northern Ireland where I moved to...it’s...really weird. It’s made me not want to start an art business but, we’ll see 🥲

Why did you choose to charge in USD vs. CND? This is something I am struggling with in pricing my stuff.

Hello, just want to ask you for the shipping uk order, did you conciser to deliver DDP (delevery duty paid) so the delivery company will charge you directly for the customs taxes , you don’t need to do it by yourself the company shipping will?

Even in the UK we don't like our gov't We have just had the budget and as a disabled small business owner working when my health allows they don't care they will assume we are getting an income based on the minimum wage and then tax us accordingly whether we are actually taking home that or not, usually not. We are being thrown to the dogs over and over. Our gov't is lazy so they will try and get everyone else to do their work so expect to be doing more and more. The nurses have just been given a 1% pay rise but when broken down it will mean less taken home where they, the mp's can choose their own pay rises and they are not tight at all in doing so. Sorry I managed to rant a bit.

Wait, they ASSUME your income?! I can't believe they are getting away with that!

@@BayleeJae Yup its called the minimum income floor. Its killed off lots of small businesses and if your health compromised they still expect you to do the same as those who aren't. Luckily in a way we are now thanking Covid because whilst its tough in lots of other ways that has put the MIF on hold but that won't be for long so we are trying to make the most of it because our chancellor of the exchequer has decided that we must pay big time when it stops so our tax rate will increase and our benefits will drop. Oh Happy Days eh.

@@BayleeJae Thats Soley for Benefits and Self Employed people, if you're on benefits and are registered as self employed and your business is over a year old you get hit with something called a 'minimum income floor' which I believe is worked out at X amount of hours on our national minimum wage, i think its either 16 hours or whatever they class as full time ( our benefits and working at the same time is worked out if you get x amount of benefits and x amount of wages 63p of every £ gets deducted for your benefits so the minimum income floor is just a basic amount they expect you to make a month and it gets deducted from your total benefits, it does suck if you don't make that amount one month doesn'tespecially disabled people but the gist we get from the government is they'd rather everyone be a PAYE employee rather then self employed

In regards to the fan art question, will they go as far as demonetizing/striking a fan art video.. or is it just strictly the selling of the art? For example, could DreamWorks have copy right claimed your Shrek as a Hot Guy video?
