@CasmoTV Old school guy here training for high intensity conflicts - for hover fire the technique is to start from a stationary hover and pitch the nose up to get the aircraft to move back. Once you get the aircraft moving back you slowly drop the nose to the target then fire. If done properly the recoil of the gun will help counteract the forward movement. For more skill you start to unmask while moving rearward and then just before you get above the trees you lower the nose and pull the trigger as the target is exposed.

Nice. Good info. Yeah we didn’t do too much of that in the early 2000s. At best we did some MPSM shots from a hover.

@@CasmoTV I taught there 03-06 and yep. Of course trying to get people to understand that it was an AQC to get people to learn the 58D and not an RL1 course was another challenge as people rotated through. I think we did the best we could for being the neglected red headed stepchildren of Army aviation. Hell I remember when AH guys “dreamed about having our sight.” Funny thing was the TISU was as capable as the MTADS but required the LWLCD monitors and two card signal processor. Beautiful picture it was but guess what the Army didn’t want to buy? You and this module have pushed me into finally getting DCS

As an old 14B (Stinger/Linebacker PL) wanted to drop a note to thank you for your gun runs, specifically not flying over your target (as I’m writing this you then do it, but called yourself out). Drives me nuts when GS does it on his channel. Cheers.

The grease pencil mark on the windscreen is the “ABRM”. Aerial Ballistic Reference Mark. I always thought it was weird that they had holographic gun sights all the way back in WWII and now in the GWOT we were using a dang grease pencil mark on the windscreen. Classic example of life in 58D😅

We had that happen, Bagram 2011, TF Phoenix. A then NCO soon to be SPC was getting the TI to sign off on the 50 after he PMCS'd the 50. Well at somepoint instead of the 50 dry firing like they wanted to, a hrydra rocket launched out the other side of the aircraft and smacked the T barrier in front of the aircraft, since we parked them in stalls. We called him Rocket Man or Elton John for the rest of the deployment.

I'm changing my resume to read 15J 'Farp Kid'. I never knew you guys called us that but I totally get where it came from. From my perspective our training on the M296 was lacking. I was always embarrassed when it failed(in any number of ways). As I became more experienced and after some time with the civilian gun rep I learned that things like a buffer assembly that was 15 years old and many 10000s of rounds through it would almost always fail and that's all we pretty much had was all worn out parts but only he knew they were really unserviceable. If the rep gave us a new one, it was like the holy grail and we valued it. Looking back, if i was in charge we would have ordered all new buffers, springs etc and rebuilt the guns every gunnery with new parts, not just the best looking parts that we had. These skills were probably attrited by the armament MOS being brought together with avionics/electronics, and loss of people with experience to UAV etc. Anyways the M3P was great for us as well, slashing the workload of gun maintenance, very reliable, and ease of repair/maintenance in the field(the 2 pull pins you speak of).

@@Pekins_ They generally either use the military designation (the US military is surprisingly metric), like 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO, which in traditional (i.e. old) civilian terms would be referred to as .223 and .308, or the original naming schemes like 9x19mm Parabellum/Luger/NATO, which were never called by the inch size. For guns that are not in (current) military calibers it's AFAIK most common to use original marketing names, like .45 ACP etc. The one really common exception is the .50 BMG, because officially in military parlance that's called the 12.7x99mm NATO. But "fifty cal" rolls of the tongue a lot better than "twelve point seven mill", and .50 BMG was the civilian and military designation for like 20-30 years before they went metric, that it's understandable why it stuck. I don't find it particularly annoying after a while, if someone says "cal" and they're not an idiot (I've heard someone numpties say "9 cal"...) I hear that as "0.XYZ inches" and of course millimeters are millimeters regardless. And if someone says "five-five-six" I assume they're referring to a gun with a military origin for the design, rather than a purebred civilian hunting rifle, since most of those would specify ".223 Remington" as the caliber. The really annoying part of all this is how often people JUST say for example ".38 cal" or "9mm". There's .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .380 ACP, .38 ACP, .38 Super, .38 Smith & Wesson Special, .38 S&W, or 9x19mm Para, 9mm Glisenti, 9x18mm Ultra, 9x30mm Grom, 9mm Browning Long, 9x21mm, 9x21mm Gyurza, 9mm Action Express, 9x23mm Steyr, 9x23mm Largo, 9x25mm Mauser, 9x25mm Dillon, 9mm Winchester Magnum, 9x18 Makarov, etc. etc. And .38 inches and 9mm bullets are the same size to begin with! And the .357 Magnum is the same size bullet as the .38 Short/Long Colt! ARGH. =)

.50 Cal = 0.5 inches = 12.7mm (the .50 BMG is also known as the 12.7x99mm NATO). The AH-64 has a 30x113mmB cannon, not a machine gun. And the Tank Killer, if by that you mean the A-10, has a 30x173mm cannon, which has over TWICE the muzzle energy. Compared to the .50 BMG the 30x173mm cartridge has over 10 times the muzzle energy.
