I wish we could have like a national caboose weeks or something where all railways put cabooses on the ends of all their trains. They’re just such an iconic symbol of American railroading!
@josephschuster14945 ай бұрын
The railroads were compelled by union rules to supply one caboose to house the crew assigned to every train. They were disliked by the railroads, as they required the same maintenance/repairs that other revenue-generating freight cars needed, but the caboose brought in no revenue. Railroads rejoiced when they were finally allowed to leave cabooses sitting in the sidings, awaiting sale, donation, or scrapping. 🚂
@josephschuster14945 ай бұрын
Excellent topic! Yes, America’s railroads once had a cornucopia of cabooses and utilized them to the maximum, even using them beyond their rail worthiness for trackside crew shelters and equipment storage purposes. Both my S and O Gauge layouts each boast one train consisting of just over 20 cabooses each…a pretty impressive sight! 🚂

Back when all railroad rollingstock had journal boxes for bearings, the caboose allowed the rear brakemen to monitor it for overheating. They came out with roller bearings, but the caboose was still required by law until the late '80s or early '90s.

I can go much bigger which I’m really thinking I should. I use a lot of woodland scenic buildings. I use LionChief plus 2.0 because I have a cab 1l remote but can’t find a base 1 or base 2 so I’m just hoping they release the cab 3 soon I would like to buy some legacy trains.
