Pausing at 30 seconds... I'm surprised that it didn't start first pull what with being EFI and all. I don't think I've seen that with these Merhatsu engines before, but I guess everyone's doing hot starts. Thanks for the honesty.
@Nardage Жыл бұрын
The guy at the boat shop RNF marine told me to get an electric start because the old guys have a hard time starting it.
@Prototheria Жыл бұрын
@@Nardage That's as good a reason as any. My 75 year old dad recently had shoulder surgery and there's no way he'd be able to pull start one of these engines, even with the decompression feature. Personally, I'd always chose electric start if it's available. On these engines in particular, it only adds nine pounds, plus the cables and a lipo battery and you're talking an overall weight gain of around 13-14 lbs. Well worth the convenience if someone's able to swing the extra cost.
@RealFishin Жыл бұрын
I see the point on the electric start. The dealer did not have any electric start in stock and I wanted to save the weight since it is a small boat. I will say this engine is much easier to start compared to my previously owned 9.9 carb Yamaha. if cold starting the mercury it will take two pulls.
@Nardage Жыл бұрын
You gotta start it on the first pull when it's warmed up already. If you mess up on the first pull it'll take 5 lol. When it's cold like 2 pulls to start. My boat is a 1436 and I was going 27 mph with 2 guys and trolling motor n battery in the front.

Rec-90 also known as ethanol-free gas

I wouldn’t run ethanol in any small engines especially when they sit up for any length of time. I’ve rebuilt too many small engine carbs over the years due to ethanol in them…tillers, generators, lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws etc. even 150 merc carbs (sat for 2yrs). Fuel line had ethanol gas that crystallized in it. Not a good outcome. Everything I own has r-90 with Stabil in it.

Hello I just got the same motor for my 12 Plastic boat it 's made by KL Industries and it's rated for a 15 hp outboard, I had 2 stroke on it and that worked good , but the old motor wore out, And I picked up a 2021 15 hp Mercury that is a lot heavier than the old motor , did you have any problems with the difference in weight when you upgraded , Please advise !!!
@RealFishin3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new motor!! I have not experienced any issues with the extra weight! It’s not really noticeable on my boat as the difference is only 20 pounds or so and I am glad I bought the bigger engine. It’s smart that you did not exceed the hp ratings of the boat. How much heavier is the new engine vs your old two stroke? Can you reduce weight in another area? I see KL Industries makes the American 12 jon fishing boat that has a hp capacity of 6 hp and the pro120 which maxes out at 10 HP. Do you have either of these or a different model?

A little confused. I’ve been looking at this EFI unit to replace a Honda 15 4-stroke on a 14ft aluminum boat. It scoots along at 25mph at sea level now. I drop down to 10mph at 7000ft (Lake Tahoe) since it’s carbureted, hence my interest in EFI. I hate to lose more than 10mph at sea level so your result worries me. Why do you think the Mercury is so slow?
@RealFishin2 жыл бұрын
@cbdane I think one reason is the run was done with two big adults (225-235 pounds each) plus a lot of fishing gear. Also, the boat is a utility v bottomed boat which likely causes more drag vs a typical flat bottom jon boat. With one person, the boat moves along very fast. I will have to grab a speed test video of me running the boat by myself. Is your boat rated for a 20 HP or max of 15HP? I would go with the max HP allowed.

I get 23 mph on a 12 ft aluminum boat with a 15hp 2 stroke. Solo, but it definately gets there too easily and I weight 130. If I do get a more aggressive prop I can probably get 30mph. With 2 people, I get 21mph. With a 8hp 2 stroke, I get 19 with 2 people.
@johngordon9140 Жыл бұрын

@00powerstrokin2 жыл бұрын
How fast did it run with the 9.9? Was the jump to a 15 a big difference?
@RealFishin2 жыл бұрын
@Aaron Hemberger if you use the 9.9 with one person in the boat, she would run nice at about 15-18 MPH. With 2 adults- the speed was around 10 MPH with the trim tabs - without the tabs it would run a few MPH slower. a couple thoughts on the slower speed- I believe the utility vee needs more power to plane vs a true flat bottomed jon boat and we are two bigger adults that weight 220 to 250 pounds so requiring more power. The 15HP is noticeable improvement and I recommend the bigger engine. fuel consumption is still really good with the bigger engine.
