Ladies! HUGE congratulations on completing this. Brutal, and very dangerous effort, and I'm glad that you didn't need to be rescued, and didn't need to go to the ER in the park, or in Flagstaff afterward. That was gnarly. Canyon rule dictates that: If you blow up in the Canyon, you owe the Canyon a redemption run. So it looks like you'll be going back, and I honestly hope you do! If you do go back, use the South Kaibab Trail as your entry into the Canyon. It's 2 miles shorter, and because it's steeper than Bright Angel, it's faster into Phantom. There's no drinking water on it, but there's a water station just after you exit the Black Bridge, about 100m down the trail, on the left (it's where all the rafts park during the day). You'll see us taking this route into Phantom, and using that water station, in my Oct. 2021 Rim2River video. So the trick is; take the least amount of water, or no water, and save your legs, get to the bottom fast, and then fill up at that water station. Never a good idea to separate from each other during this trek. One of you could trip and fall, get injured, get bit by a rattler (they are pink and gray, and very tough to see), etc. and be in real trouble, and the other person would never know. I know you were carrying radios, but during a fall, stuff goes flying off to nowhere, and the person could be so injured that they can't use the radio. Stick together, settle into a very light cruise, chatting and laughing pace, and just enjoy the ride. You'll feel a lot better if you keep your body core temp low. So wet hair and shirt, before you think you need to (not when it's cold at night obviously), especially prior to, and during, the long climbs. Elevated body core temp brings on a wave of feeling really bad, making bad decisions, not drinking, not eating, and can be a real death sentence in the Canyon. It creeps up on you. To that end, wear a wide brim hat, to keep the sun off your face, head, and neck. You'll see us running in "Sunday Afternoons brand "Compass" hats. I know it doesn't look cool, but it's the right tool for the job in the Canyon. Same goes with the shirt. A white, or light colored, "Dri-Fit" fabric, long sleeve shirt, will keep the sun off, and you'll feel so much better. The sun at high altitude, especially in the desert, just microwaves you all day. That "sun stroke" that sets in, is as bad as the elevated body core temp. You can avoid blisters by wearing the smart wool, Injinji toe socks with ankles. Bring little bottles of 5 Hour Energy Drink as your backup plan, for BEFORE you start getting really wrecked. We use Liquid I.V. in various flavors, put a Vitamin B Complex 100 pill into our flask on the first fill up, along with 2 magnesium lysinate pills, broken in half (Doctors Best Magnesium from Ama z0n). We only use the Vit B once per day, but we're only doing R2R or Rim2River, we aren't doing R3's. On an R3, I'd probably do at least 2 Vit B pills. Keep your gear super light, and just enough electrolyte drink to get you to the next water station. That keeps the weight off your legs, and helps keep the pack from leveraging your torso side to side, which takes muscle activity to try and correct. This kind of thing adds up when crossing the Canyon, and just wears you out. Awesome video, and I appreciate that you showed the guts and the glory that it truly takes to run there! I've done 12 R2R's as cross-country runs, since 2015, and my daughter has done 6 with me. She did her first one on her 16th birthday, in 2015, a day after I turned 52. Love running there and I'm training for another Rim2River at the end of May, in 8 weeks!

Great job! 4 days before your epic R3, I did my first R2R at 66 years old and it was my first big challenge hike! After seeing all these cool R3 videos like yours I really want to give it a go :). Congratulations again!
