Took an adventure for training myself this week on unfamiliar terrain and found it a great way to forget about pace/splits and put focus into things like fuelling, navigation, heat management etc I think I'll be doing it more often as part of race prep

That's absolutely a big part of it, but running a big adventure (or a test race for that matter) enables you to put a lot of the things you've done in training previously together with your nutrition, gear etc.... to the test in more of a real-world way.

Recovery is part of the training. Eating is recovery. Curry is eating. Ergo curry is training. Quod erat demonstrandum!
