Exactly. He doesn't actually run, he trots. He only goes as fast as my pace, which isn't very fast compared to other runners.

Years ago I would rollerblade with one of my Dobie boys, Caleb. He would run on the crub grass while I stayed on the street. As we came upon a mailbox, Caleb would run next to me so not to tangle the leash, then back onto the grasss. The first time we rollerbladed together you could see the happiness in his eyes that I could keep up with him.

7 months is too early to run with your pup. They can end up with joint or bone issues. Normally you would want to wait until they are a 1.5 years or so.

I have bad knees, running isn't really an option. But we had a Lab when I got my Dobie. The old lab taught the fetch game. A Dobie loves long throws, so they can get up to speed. They can run, but they have the speed button. When in full sprint, their body looks exactly like a greyhound. They get that front to rear teeter tottering motion. A Dobie in full sprint will actually shock people. They have never really seen it.

Totally agree. It's amazing when you see them get low and fast. And you're right, especially with that big chest and long stride, absolutely looks similar to a greyhound!

Our Tori is so fast and she loves to run figure 8 laps in the yard. She does 8 - 10 lapps before she stops. She is an amazingly graceful runner. She reminds me of a gazelle. Even the neighbors enjoy watching her run.

Running with a Doberman in this way is too risky.. Doberman is a 35 kilo dog .. imagine being pulled by a Doberman.. too risky for back and spine issues

So helpful thank you. We just got a doverman pincher on valentines day she is 4 months now and she is SO smart and full of energy. Which is perfect for me because I love to run. Our last dog was a husky and she was a big runner and so easy to train. But this one has a lot of attitude. 😄

The biggest challenge to running with my doberman is keeping him by my side. I feel like all of our runs are training runs where I'm constantly having to remind him to get "With Me" by my side, which doesn't make the run enjoyable. :(

i have an issue, so i just adopted a Doberman whos about to turn 3 months who seems to be scared of humans. He does great with my other 2 dogs and plays well with them, but wont get near me, my husband or daughter. He will refuse to be anywhere near us that when I take him out to potty he wont come in and runs away from me when I am trying to put him back inside. What can I do to make him trust us?

Yeah Dobermans definitely need exercise but there are options depending on what you can or can't do. I did a video awhile back about some easy ways to get your Doberman exercise, maybe you'll find something useful in that video! Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpXQonudbLmUgsk

What kind of leash you using? What you need is the " snout leash". I forget the actual name of it. It goes around the nose and the neck. Control the head and control the body. If my Dobie took off sprinting, I could click the lock on the flex leash and it would yank her head down and make her flip. After that first flip, she never tried that again.

Haha, that can be dangerous if you're running at high speeds and he tries to do that! Definitely get him dialed in with the positioning portion before trying any serious running! Haha good luck!

The first slow run I went with my Bruce lasted 14 minutes! The weirdest thing about my Doberman is that he rarely drinks water and we live in the Philippines!!! On a slow 30 minute run, we cover maybe 1 km. LOL he so slow! He's more of a sprinter than an endurance runner, I guess.

Great video and some important points. Would reiterate the wait til 18 months (18-24 months) - I’ve read a lot of advice that waiting for growth plates to fuse is v important. The odd short run ok, but nothing regular or long. I’ve run with 2 dobies, many 1000s of km, up to a half marathon (distance, not race). Leo would stop sniff, poop, mark regularly but he could run for hours. He retired at 7 when he stopped enjoying it and will slope off now if he sees the hip harness! Kalli started running gradually at 18 months and at 28, she’s a machine. Convinced she’s part husky, soon as the harness comes out she’s insane. She’s more consistent, doesn’t stop, pulls like a freight train (i’m not complaining when we run) but doesn’t have the stamina Leo did, 5-10k max. I run at least a min a km faster with the dogs, smashed my 5k race pb on a regular weekend run with Kalli - it’s definitely cheating for Strava segments! Barkswell do a nice hip harness with pouches for poo bags etc. Treat yourself to some Nike vaporflys so you can keep up with your crazy mutt too!

Lauren and Apollo are very cute! I have been running (and participating in other mushing sports) with Dobermanns for almost 20 years. We compete in a sport called Canicross. The dog has to wear a special harness, and the handler needs proper gear (the special running belt that goes quite low on hips and legs) and a special bungee line. Non-stop Dogwear makes good ones. It is very fast, and the dog has to pull (dogs staying behind or next to the leg will be disqualified). You cannot win if the dog is not a heavy puller :D. In my personal opinion itś way more fun to go at full speed! So a good sport for those super fast and powerful Dobies. The terrain needs to be soft, it's not good to run on asphalt. Also, temperatures need to be taken into account. Because we train often (+ other dog sports) and to avoid injuries I take special care of my Dobermanns and we do dog fitness + physio + massage several times a week.
@jokah7929
@jokah7929 Жыл бұрын
This is really good advice, then it seems like canicross is something really different, where you need a way better hands free harness because this one would hurt your back real bad since you actually want your dog to pull, and boy are they strong dogs. Naturally, since the dog is gonna pull, you don't want him to pull from the neck, you have to buy them an appropriate harness too. I'll just add that if you ever want to try canicross, watch out for ankles, knees and back injury, start slow and teach them the right/left command before, since you have to be in control even if the dog is in front of you. I do some bikejoring with both my dobies too, amazing to do and always brings up a smile to people seeing them :)
