My two favorites are Stryd and HRM Pro, for inside/outside (including Zwift) workout precision. HRM Pro for same reasons ou exposed but also because that's the only Garmin HRM with all these metrics with double connection either Ant+ or bluetooth! Quite useful to have both instead of only ant+ in the HRM Run (the red one). I changed the battery and didn't get any issues. It goes to swimming pools and open water. That's the one to buy that can do everything for any sports. Stryd ist of course good because of power, but not only. It gives you an absolute proper distance covered metric which is definitely a must have if you run in big cities or forests, where the GPS from the watch is not giving a correct pace. The Stryd is always perfect. Of course you need to connect it properly, and add on garmin the data field to get the metrics included in your fit file (ie the activity details) but it's not that complicated and for those getting to the point of buying a Stryd it's something "known" to do. Another massive advantage of the stryd is the connection to Zwift! Everybody knows treadmills shows a fantasy speed which is not your outside running speed. So using s Stryd will ensure you run inside and outside at the same speed/pace! And in Zwift you have then a correct measure of the speed exactly like outside (you will be "slower" than people actually using the speed of the belt but at least no difference between inside/outside running for you personally). And Stryd connects both ant+ and bluetooth, so another big advantage here :) And about the video, it was really nice to learn about other tools I didn't know about so quite informative :)

With stryde how accurate does it seem for short distance and speed? I have a Garmin pod I'm looking to replace. I have an hrm but not with running dynamics.
@alfromtx2453 жыл бұрын
Stryd is awesome! There's plenty of data to nerd out over, if that's what you're into. But I use it more for dialing in my training intensity and for racing. Take a typical long run for example. I'll set my watch screen to show distance and lap average power. I hardly even look at my watch until the end of mile 2, but just try to settle into an easy effort. Then, wherever my lap average power is at that point (a warmed-up easy effort), I'll just maintain the same intensity for the rest of the run. That way, regardless of the terrain or wind, the intensity is just right (easy). Stryd was a lifesaver on my last marathon. It was a course with a lot of hills and a very windy day. This could have been a disaster. But by holding my power target, I was able to run the entire race without ever having to slow down. I finished strong, feeling like the tank was pretty much empty. So yes, Stryd definitely gets my vote!

Thanks for the video. I agree that Garmin's HRM straps work very well, but only until you have to change batteries. Even when replacing the little rubber rings and doing everything by the book, trying different battery brands et cetera, three (!) Garming HRM straps have died on me (one regular HRM, two HRM Run straps), so I switched to a Polar H10. I've heard similar stories from other runners, so it might be something to factor in if you're deciding on a heart-rate strap.

I don’t recommend the Garmin HRM Pro because the module and strap are a single piece. Once the electrodes from the strap deteriorate from sweat and swimming in open waters (I have the HRM Tri) you have to replace it all instead of buying a new strap like on the Polar H10. I really like the Garmin Running Pod though, it’s really small and gives the same metrics than the HRM Pro (minus heart rate). For me the perfect combination is the Polar H10 strap, in which you can replace the strap and keep the module, plus Garmin Running Pod.

I use the Garmin HRM-Pro. It's very helpful for my heart rate training as it is more accurate. The metrics it provides are great. Vertical oscillation and ratio, and GCT ratio have helped improve my running. If you just want metrics though then get the Pod. If you want an HRM too, then invest in the Pro rather than Pod and HRM (unless you specialise in swimming). Enjoyed hearing about all these other gadgets!!!

Have been using Garmin's original 1st generation HRM Run for years, the sensor module itself is still working great, but I've changed the actual strap 3 times. The problem with HR monitors is the strap itself is the weak link and I think Garmin are being a bit naughty in not allowing you to keep the module while changing the strap. In saying that the only information I personally find useful is obviously HR, I'm currently running to HR rather than pace, cadence as I notice it drop off as I get tired (but my watch does it too) and L/R balance as I use it as an indicator of a possible injury coming if I favour one side over the other. The one thing ye didn't mention was power, the HRM run after downloading an app to you watch (why do we need to do this Garmin) will give you a power reading and I find that interesting. So for me Anna's choice, the Pod, is the best value for money and will be included in a future letter to Santa after my HR finally gives up the ghost.
@tjubix1525 Жыл бұрын
How do you measure the power? What app do you need to install? Do you need a Stryd?
@regstoy Жыл бұрын
@@tjubix1525 there is native power on some of the newer watches, in saying that, I used the Garmin power app from the connect IQ store for my older 645, you need the newer HRM run straps, the dual strap doesn't do record these metrics. I use the power readings mainly for faster interval runs, other than that, it's more curiosity after a run, that I look at them.

The topics you're touching are interesting but I consistently find the approach a bit superficial. Just mentioning the most obvious here, I find Stryd to be severely undervalued and you didn't talk about its main points. Like reviewing a car's interior features but skip looking at its engine and transmission. Stryd has 2 main things (as far as I discovered in 4 years): 1. Power - essentially if you do any uneven terrain like trail, you can't pace by, well, pace, but you will need something else to make your intensity consistent that is responsive. That is pretty much power, HR is slow for that, not ideal especially if your terrain is not about big mountains but more undulated (that the word?). 2. Distance measurement. May not be 100% accurate but it's probably better than GPS and more importantly it's super consistent (as long as you're running - I found it less good walking steep sections). I basically used Stryd to do repeated 200m, or 400m efforts when I was doing reps for marathon training. If you know how GPS works you know instant pace is completely useless. But with Stryd in a couple of seconds of pace change you will see a pretty accurate pace so if you're training according to pace (I was using a Jack Daniel training plan so I had established paces to run my different trainings) you just need it. Of course if you do your reps on a track you don't, and that is always the best - track and a stopwatch - but for a lot of us that don't have a track nearby an accurate pace measurement is pretty much critical if you are aiming for a specific race time (e.g. if you're aiming for a 3:30 marathon you better know approximately in advance what half, 10k, 5k, or intervals you're supposed to be able to run). So consistent power and distance measurement are 2 super important aspects of Stryd, the rest are just nice additions (it measures / estimates a lot of the same data the Garmin straps do like the Run or Tri (or the new Pro which is almost exactly like the tri just new colour and more expensive.. sure it has BLT but if you use this you surely have a Garmin watch and use ANT+ anyway).

I found myself drowning in information last year and it began to affect my running in a negative way. I run for enjoyment and to help with fitness but I have no ambition to break records or win events. Note, I said events and not races. I don't race. I use a Garmin running chest strap (red) because I have found that using wrist-based hr was too erratic. There is lots of other data on the watch and the strap but I use the watch to record my distance and route and the chest strap to enable me to keep a more reliable check on hr. I do a low hr session weekly. I also have an alarm to help me stay below tempo rate on all of my other runs except for when I do intervals. Information anxiety is a real issue for some people but I appreciate that others simply cannot get enough.

One thing that is not mentioned about Stryd is that's a killer footpod to track distance and instant speed, especially on short intervals, and it can be calibrated on your running. Also, battery lasts way longer than I expected (I charge it maybe twice a month). No more activities with completely made up data because GPS got lost. I'd buy it again if it were to break down, although I have to admit it's a bit overkill for the level of runner I am.

As an example vertical oscillation would show you if you move up and down too much, meaning you form whole running is not optimal. With a name 'footpod' that's not where you'd think it goes! Lol. Have been tempted by Stryd a few times, but giving control to a device of fast I should run, I dunno... Found the chest strap I had before I got wrist based heart rate watches chafed a bit in longer runs, tended to move out of place too, maybe newer straps are better. The Garmin footpod looks reasonably priced and all, doesn't seem like it would fall off or anything? Doesn't chafe hopefully? Strava seems a way to escape a particular eco system, might it be an option to cross to others while keeping your current stuff too?

@ludovicjost49113 жыл бұрын
Kenyan runners if you mean the pros indeed they definitely don't use that themselves even though you can see many checking their watch for pace and time... For non pros having lot less time to train is still a good value added, because could help you improve faster in the very short amount of time between normal every day job and real life things. Just looking at better precision with a Stryd giving you the correct pace where the GPS loses signal, can be already a good thing to have an idea of how you run... 😊

@@PlutoDwarf-j9f I agree. Four months into heart rate training and I consider it the best thing I have ever discovered in my training! I did a half-marathon a few days ago and just by glancing at my heart rate every now and then I could tell the level of effort. I was hardly bothered by the pace. And based on the data from training I knew exactly where I needed to be in order to finish the race comfortably.

With the HRM Pro, you have to to use another device to initiate the activity. I start a run with my phone and leave it and the house.
