Really neat to see your video. I done the almost identical trip in 2009 - 2010 so it was nice to see familiar places. LOL even the diving in Dahab. I headed north from Petra through Syria just before it blew to bits. Cheers!!
@MaxUtley5 жыл бұрын
miles g I did a reccee into Syria and it was too late. Went back to Dahab via Israel and after a few months crossed to Turkey from Alexandria. We crossed Sinai several times and in hindsight were lucky as the beginnings of ISIS started to form in the north ... we hid in a Wadi on a couple of occasions as. Took refuge in a military base after getting too close to Jihadi strongholds. Such as shame ....

Yep...that is the big bike sand course I did at beginning video in South Africa. Lots of KTM 990s and BMW GS 1150/1200 . I used Fannys KLR which is one of my favourite bikes. The course was run over a long weekend by the guys at CountryTrax. Sand is the most feared riding surface on a fully loaded big motorbike ...but can be tamed with good instruction and a bit of confidence.

The China section was not on KTMs as it was difficult to get them into China legally and CF Moto gave us two TR650s to ride across the huge country, including Tibet and Qinghai. We returned bike after China, continued on KTMs and the TRs are CF Motos museum in Hangzhou having performed superbly. Will be doing Xinjiang on the new Honda 1000 cc Africa Twin in 2016. Congrats for the video, I was reading your blog and you never talk about security, specially north Dahab, that region is high risk in every security assessment. Did you travelled there or you had good sources to keep you safe. Keep on going... don't stop! ;)
@MaxUtley9 жыл бұрын
We did end up in a dodgy part of north Sinai as we had to cross it one evening and planned to camp in the cover of a wadi . We were spotted by some dodgy guys in a Toyota pickup and so we quickly packed up and carried on to a small town well after dark ( not far as it happens to where the Russian airliner crashed) and we camped in an abandoned hotel. The next day we got up early and blasted across the rest of northern Sinai to Eliat and then down the coastal road to Dahab. Sixth sense I guess. On the border with Syria and Jordan I spent time with Bedouin tribes and back then predicted the emergence of ISIS because I was told of about these crazies and their warped ideology. In fact I wrote to the UK government and gave a "better the devil you know" assessment of the situation that has been proved 4 years later to be the correct as it happens.. Russians got it right. But nobody responded to me. Could have saved countless lives if they had listened.

I received negative comments about my music choice, especially from Americans, but this is the sort of sound track I had in my head as we rode along through amazing places. Fanny and I spent 2 years riding on this expedition and this is just 15 mins of rather amateur editing of random filming whilst on the hoof. I wish I had done a better job of it, but there you are.

Well, anyone who complained about the music is clearly an idiot!! I thought it was excellent. The music did really add to the footage. (And, by the way, I am American. LOL!!)

@MaxUtley6 жыл бұрын
Standard Pirelli MT90 scorpions on front and rear and then from Nairobi across the sand and deserts to Egypt we put a Pirelli MT21 rallycross tyre on front and carried spare on back of bike which we replaced back again in Dahab and on to Rome where we got a fresh set of MT90. Used this combo because we need long lasting on back, but need front to be more grippy in the sand .... bigbiketrip.net/equipment/

Great trip! How much did it end up costing you?
@MaxUtley8 жыл бұрын
It was not as much as we expected. The petrol for two big 1000cc bikes was the biggest cost. We sold the bikes 3 years later for about 75% what we paid. We still have all the camping gear. In Asia we got sponsorship that paid for everything.... of course only after they noticed us after Europe and Africa. I guess total was about 8-9000 quid which is less than we'd spend if we lived in a house for 2 years actually, although we had no income of course. carne de passages needed a deposit that I actually made 6% on as I used a South African bank.

Three pieces of music .... I think names in description. The first piece has blocked my video due to royalty claim although I sourced it from a royalty free site. In any case none of my videos are monatorised and the music source gets any advertising money. You would think artists nowadays would welcome their music being used so they can get an income and promote their music. Anyway....

Did the bikes ever breakdown during your trip? Do you think the BMW 310 GS would have been capable of completing the same trip?
@MaxUtley6 жыл бұрын
Quite sure you can go round the world on anything ... Africa been crossed on R1s, scooters, bicycles, all sorts of vehicles---my only advise is look after fuel filter. We had very little issues, all Part and parcel of an awesome adventure. My other half, Fanny was very inexperienced with .only a few weeks riding experience. She did it. If budget is tight a KLR is a great choice. Saw many cheap F650 GS on the road. You are riding your machine and living with it for months on end so I guess ride something you like and enjoy.

Was asked how this is filmed. Admittedly, very amateur with a regular Panasonic camera on video mode and nearly all footage was filmed with camera held in my left hand as I rode along. A bit with a GoPro but I found it difficult to use and battery life was very poor. I tried mounting the camera on helmet and bike but it shakes about so much that it was easier just to hold camera. I pretty much rode to Shanghai with one hand, even in sand.
