Rupert Neve Super Silk (MBT) VS Silk (MBP) Review

In this video I review which is better. The Rupert Neve Master Bus Transformer super silk or the Master Bus Processor standard silk. Is there actually a difference between the two or is super silk just the name for it now you can use both silk blue and silk red.

As it's a new product there's very few reviews that are looking at it against other Neve products. I needed to do these tests myself as I needed to know if I'm making the right choice to switch the MBP for the MBT. So as much as it's beneficial to people who want to buy the MBT it's also highly beneficial for me too.

I purchased the MBP yesterday! The reason is that after demoing many pieces of equipment, the sound that went through the SFE section and the MBP circuit sounded truly unique. Super Silk and EQ of MBT were very intriguing, but I could only afford one due to financial reasons, so I chose the MBP from an overall perspective! I always look forward to your videos! Thank you!

The MBP sfe is 100% a unique tool. I am hoping Neve release a super silk box. That would be worth adding to the MBP.

@user-os6on3if7f I don't think they'll release it as it'll affect the sales of the MBP and MBT. We buy these units for those silk textures. For me it's not about the compressors.

How were the MBPs set up. Insee there are two. Were they both in parallel to compare a blended red/blue or were you alternating between them? Thanks again for these demos. Purely on silk on the silk front i’ll have to admit I did not hear enough to make me jump in. Then again I have more silk than i can shake a stick at already.

The chain went into one MBP then into the second MBP.

So is it fair to assume that on the 2x MBP test, the difference could have also been on part due to the order of the chain was applied and that is was serial rather than parallel? Nit picking i know but would it be possible to get a closer match if the MBPs were in parallel and blended? (If this is how the MBT silk circuit also works?). Not being critical of the test so mush as curious as the owner of two MBPs whether i could get even closer to the MBT super silk without buying one. BTW - do you plan to keep both units yourself?

@infojunkie4989 I think it's a fairer test to bypass all but the silk on each unit and run one into the other. There are probably sight differences compared to if you have them both in one unit. There's a video coming answering this question.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio i agree all else bypassed to make kr fair. But feed both MBPs in parallel and then blend in somehow with something entirely transparent. It would be a very niche case as nobody sane would use two MBPs to achieve what an MBT can do in one box ha ha.

Good stuff! If you only had the money to buy EITHER the MBT or the HG-2 which would you buy? Which is more needed / useful?

I'd say the MBT. I love the HG-2 but it does one thing. But it does it well. The MBT does a good amount of stuff well. The super silk can be compared to the hg2 in some ways.

I run the 5060 (or sometimes the 5059) and use the MTC into the MBP on the master insert of the 5060. For me, I love what both the MTC and the MBP do for the sound, and miss either one when I bypass one or the other, or both. I think RND knew what they were doing and made sure their new product, when paired with the older MBP, would enhance it and not replace it. They've also stated the same and I have to agree.

I am really enjoying your videos! I was wondering about these 2 how they would sound. Basis the last 2 examples I tend to say that the MBT sounds a bit more tight and full at the same time. Btw, currently enjoying the Fusion a lot and I don't regret at all (your videos were part of my decision making, so thank you for that)

I'd still recommend the Fusion for the fact you get the mid side insert and it gives you a little bit of everything. The MBT is similar but twice the price and you don't get the mid side insert. I'd say you made the right choice but as your mastering chain grows you may find the Fusion gets pushed out in favour of dedicated saturation, EQ, HF compressor and widener. Until that happens you have a great box. I talk from a mastering perspective. The Fusion has a lot of life for tracking and mixing.

I want to add analog gear to my mix bus. Which will cover most genre? SSL Fusion with SSL bus plus, or neve mbt with Wes NG? Or any other combinations?

This is great! I love my MBP. Have you heard about the SPL Big 500? Would you recommend it for mastering, to enhance the stereo field? It also has the Air Bass taken from the Iron, I believe.

Its a great unit for 500 series. I'm not against 500 series in mastering. I just prefer 19" rack version

@@AudioAnimalsStudio great! I believe the SPL Big only comes in 500 series. Would it do the job for stereo field enhancing? I’m putting together a 500 series mastering chain, a mobile setup. I have the Nvelope, an EQ, a G-Bus comp and looking to get something like the MBP for stereo field enhancing, looking at that SPL Big. And for saturation, I’ve narrowed down to the Elyisia Karacter and the Zulu, any thoughts? Appreciate it.

@eduardojimenezlostaunau5832 yes it'll be great for 500 series stereo width. They do the SPL Gemini in 19" rack format which is basically a big with mid side processor built in. 500 series saturation the Neve 542s are good for this. Elysia is also good.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio got you. Maybe I could pair the Big with a Bison for M/S. For the money, I think the Karacter may offer better value than the 542s, although I know they sound great. But I think I will get the Karacter for saturation, despite the differences, kinda like your HG-2.

Tomorrow you have the MBT vs MBP video going live at 5pm. What exactly do you want to see? I can shoot another video for a specific purpose. I may start doing some videos where I tackle specific problems using specific equipment. Such as lacking the low end thump of a kick drum? Increase silk blue like this to add weight and then add silk red to highlight the click of the kick. I think they'll be interesting.

I have a pair of 542s where I usually run red and on my MBP portico ii I run blue. MBT would be a reach for me I think. Extra 2% I think....If I was replacing the 542s or the MBP Edit: On the last example, the snare does come alive on the MBT sheesh!

MBT silk is indeed a bit smoother and more "pleasing" sounding.
