@@4autodetail718😂 so true. My dad let my aunt borrow his s580 for a long distance trip and when they came back after 4 days she took the car to a self wash and used the broom mop and micro swirled the shit out of the paint. My dad was livid and for an old man I never see him mad but he was cursing 🤬. Even though he had a kamikaze ism 3.0 coat on it it still got light swirls throughout every painted surface my aunt mopped. Dad ended up paying 1200 out of his own pocket because my aunt refused to cover the paint correction and thought he was overreacting. Moral of the story don’t trust stupid people with your vehicle.

Matt, there’s little information re: proper protection of panel edges and sharp/hard panel lines from burn-through using tape, pad selection, tool pressure, etc. I’ve noticed that some detailers essentially ignore panel edges and run the polisher across panel gaps without concern. Personally I like to tape off panel lines without encroaching too far on the panel being polished. Do you have any information you might share on this topic? I was hoping that this was going to touched on in this video. Thanks

Excellent video. Particularly interesting where the difference can be seen between 1500/3000 and 3000 alone. For compounding out the sanding scratches, I would reach straight for the Mille. I believe it works quicker than the LHR15 used here; more power, less heat, easy to get a consistent movement, smaller orbit getting right to the edges of the panel.

Zach Hicks used to do full cars by hand to get the nubs and orange peal out, on thousands of cars with fresh paint and old paint! Fresh paint is so much softer and easier to deal with! It will knock down faster and melt like butter when polishing, plus you knew how much clear you were dealing with. Now you have meters that tell you how much clear is actually on the car and basically telling you how to approach it. If this car was maintained, meaning that it has been buffed and polished over the years they probably would have hand wet sanded.

If one day I have the ‘balls’ to sand I would definitely go for the system with the foam interface we got to see here.I think it’s more safe to do than handsanding. This is a very well done video and I know the clear coat had to be knocked down in order to remove the scratches and achieve this great finish. I have a brand new car that has mild orange peel that is driving me crazy, and I want to flatten the clear coat as little as possible to improve the look. My question is, since I keep cars for more than 15 years, what will this do to the life of the paint job as far as UV protection etc. ? Will the clear coat start to peel sooner than if left alone and if so, how much sooner? Is the clear coat life in a direct ratio of how much clear coat is removed and what percent of clear coat is typically removed during a mild flattening? I heard clear coat is between 50 and 70 microns. What is the depth of a mild scratch or mild orange peel valley ?

nobody here thought with brain, so here's why. Panel had paint damage in terms of not so deep scratches, and tons of swirls (those are easily removed). He just knocked off high spots with sanding to get rid of orange peel, then componud + polish. That didn't took too much clear coat indeed. If he had really deep scratches then he will remove much more clear coat over scratch itself + surrounding area to level out.

Hey Matt, I’ve been following your channel for a while. These videos are so informative, I thank you !! Just an idea. But I was thinking it would be awesome if you took this info home and did a project where you bought a few new-ish painted panels and tested how many times a person on average could compound and polish until they burned through the clear. Having one of those depth gauges with be awesome too see the progress of getting through clear. I think this would be an awesome test. You can also test that sanding technique shown in this video ?

Exactly my thought, this would be great to see, but using micron measurements would be better
@peterrolex23496 жыл бұрын
OK it looks much better, but how many Microns did that process take off, and what % of the clear coat and UV protection is now gone? Maybe it is just the lighting, but somehow the corrected area looked a bit more grey, as opposed to the untouched area that looked a deeper black.
@semiephemeral96 жыл бұрын
Rewatching this. Matt, next time you talk to Jason would you ask him why he gauges in mils and not micron's if you wouldn't mind. By my math a difference of .1 mils should be 2.5 microns of paint. I bet you'd see bigger variances between sections gauging in microns. How much? I don't know but.....

P1500 is too rough to jump up all the way to P3000, that's why you're having alot of effort removing those sanding scratches, also considering Nissan has a softer type off clear coat?. + You also need to remove the polish residue (IPA or something simular), now the scratches are filled and covered with residue, only this way you can have an correct inspection of your work. you should've went over the P1500 with P2000-2500 first to remove the P1500 scratches. Would save some compounding too wich makes you take off less clear cut + less risk burning through the clear coat. And yes i'm no youtube expert but a real life experienced bodyshop worker.

I have a demo rupes skorpion 3 non vacuum model that I’m testing at work. I noticed the speed dial needs to be like 3/4 of the way up before the sander will even move. Is that normal or is this one defective or need breaking in? Also would it be ok to use the 6mm for a do it all prep and finishing sander? By that I mean for leveling mud, primer, and the final clearcoat finishing? I’m mostly going to be using this sander for the finishing but if I can get away with using the 6 for both then I may start with a 6 and get a 3 down the road. If not then I will just start with a 3 now and get the 6 and maybe even a 9 down the road.

I like how he says there’s still some minor hazing but would be considered “wax ready”. Overall his information is good, but if there is haziness still on the panel it is not wax ready. Wax just hides it and when the wax wears off it shows again. Just buff it til it’s gone then you don’t have to worry about it anymore! Also 1500 is too aggressive for the light scratching this car had, and in my experience 3000 clogs too easily and doesn’t really do much. 2000 would have been better for this vehicle, or simply hitting it with a rotary buffer and compound first, then going back over it with the random orbit

AWESOME AWESOME video! Learned a lot! This guy is great! Real pro! I just have one question I didn’t quite understand when he said he ‘polishes with water’ anyone here have an idea as to what he meant? Does it mean he sprays the surface with water and polish it without drying out the water? I don’t get that 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️

Adding water after blowing out rhe pad can reactivate and spread out the compound also reduces friction and heat

would have to charge 800 bucks to do the whole car their way, or you could just sand with DA and 1500 grit, then orbital with a wool cutting pad with medium grit, then light grit with foam pad, after that polish with random orbital to get swirl marks out. it would look like a black mirror!
