Hunt beating up the reporter didn't happen. It's part of hollywood license to illustrate the respect the two men had for each other. The reporter asking those questions did happen, and the other comments below are true about Lauda being harassed by that same reporter after he had stopped the press conference. There is a great interview with Lauda done by Graham Bensinger, a clip of this interview is here on you tube where Lauda says he told that reporter if he didn't stop he would kick him in the balls as hard as he could. Lauda said the film was 80% accurate to life, but he understood they needed to use some hollywood license to better show the mentality of two drivers who were fierce competitors but had the utmost respect and admiration for each other. As Lauda says at the end of the film. "In formula one there were a few men I liked, even fewer I respected. Hunt remains the only person I envy."

It was also because James felt responsible. Niki wanted the race to be cancelled due to the added risk of rain on an already dangerous track. Although James just mainly saw it as a tactic to have one less race where anyone could catch up to Niki which appealed to the majority of the racers in the room and when it came down to a vote the race, as we all know, went ahead. As well as your point I think James’ conscience took over and he couldn’t let that comment go

What really happened is after that reporter told Niki in the press conference that he was serious, he did storm out of there but in actuality, the reporter went after him and continued harassing Niki with the same questions. He finally had enough so he pinned the reporter to the wall and said quote on quote, "listen, if you don't stop now being unpolite and rude, I'm gonna kick you in your balls you will not believe". The reporter finally left after that
