Yeah everyone says this but, audience novelty aside, this is NOT their best performance (you can see Geddy's face when he flubs a note). I wish everyone would stop saying this is such a great performance just because of the crowd

@@SA-cn4jc LOL where in fact did I diss Rush? I said that this wasn't their best performance. I'd refer anyone to the YYZ off Different Stages as a far superior performance (or the live version off the Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary album). Nowhere was I criticising Rush as a band. That was obvious and you missed it, which makes you sound like a feeble little fanboy more than anything else.

Ah, the chickens. In the early days, both Geddy and Alex had the mandatory stack of amps behind them, either side of Neil's drum kit. But eventually, Geddy decided to run his bass directly through the PA system. So no stack of amps on Geddy's side of the stage. And this look unbalanced. So, as a joke, they first added clothes dryers, the kind you find at a laundromat. this also gave the a place to put t-shirts that Geddy and Alex could throw into the audience. As time went on, the stuff behind Geddy changed. Vending machines, popcorn machines, and rotisserie chicken ovens. There are other live shows where a guy in a chicken suit came out to baste the chickens in the rotisseries. On this tour, when they had a 'machine' theme, the rubber chickens were being thrown into a vat. Rush really enjoyed a good joke. You should watch their acceptance speeches when the were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after many years of being ignored. Alex's speech is hilarious, although Geddy and Neil pretend to club him with their trophies they just received.

When you said you needed more bass, I knew you'd like this one. I feel that after this song, you realize that their live versions are the way to go. They are, bar none, the tightest rock band I've seen live. And I've seen some really great groups like Pink Floyd, Yes, and Genesis, all prog rock groups themselves, with their own sound and odd time signature songs too, but great, great acts. As tight as their sound was, I don't think they were quite as in-sync as Rush. You play music, so you know what I'm talking about. It's not when a group is playing notes together that sets great musicians apart, it's when they all rest together, and you have that perfect moment with the absence of sound (ghost notes, I believe some call them), to me that defines truly tight musicians. I don't think I've seen anyone else that quite replicates that as well live as these guys do. They are just machines, their musicianship is so good. So, you've not heard a song with words. I will offer you this one, from 1981, so a classic. Xanadu, Live from Exit Stage Left - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5TWopeld9iNlac

I love how Geddy broke Church Boy's mind at the end of the song. Rush are musicians' musicians. Three virtuosos with a synergy universally recognized by others, yet with a humbleness and dedication to the music so appreciated by their fans. We are so lucky they were able to stay together for so long and generate so much good music. I am glad they are still making fans of new listeners. And I thank them every time I hear them.

Great reaction Church Boy!! I've been waiting on seeing this from you - pretty much guaranteed that you'd dig this one - as bass is what you seek!! It's long been one of my favourite Rush pieces, esp. instrumentals, for a LONG time! I remember when I got this album in 1993 - I think I repeated this song several times - jaw on the floor, just in awe!! This was an amazing version to react to (particularly that end!). I've seen this one live a few times, and it's always a treat! Alex's soaring guitar lines, Geddy's basslines & of course, Neil's steady, intricate grooves! Perfection!! Related? Only that they're 3 good ole Canadian boys - 2 from Willowdale area of Toronto (Geddy & Alex), one from the close city of St. Catharines (Neil - RIP). Where they ARE related is in their love of progressive, hard rocking music - where they think/act as one mind! Keep up the Rush journey! Cheers.

One thing RUSH does is perfection. So much so that when MTV approached them to go unplugged, they declined the invitation. So whether they are live or not isn’t an issue. Thanks for sharing the stories of your brother. That lesson he taught you was one of these guys definitely knew. They are all masters on their respective instruments, but every note they play supports the song. There are no egos among these guys, no competition for the spotlight, and they all get a chance to shine. I remember an interview with another musician (which I could remember who) saying Alex would be the standout musician in any other band, but being in Rush he is the most underrated guitarist because “he serves the song, he doesn’t step all over it.” Cheers!

So many good songs to recommend to you from Rush. It does my heart good to see a musician appreciate music I fell in love with 45 years ago. The full 2112 with all its parts tells a story reminiscent of opera, but rock and roll flavored. It's hard say which is more important to that story, the lyrics, or the music, but in my mind, one is diminished by the exclusion of the other. There is a video set to it that's animated which enhances that story.

Thanks for your story! As a seasoned singer/drummer/ and part-time bullshit guitarist, I have found over the years that the capacity to listen has taught me way more about musicianship than the actual playing. Playing tbe instrument, especially as a drummer, has always felt as though there is an irresistable force compelling me and driving me forward at times, or gently entangling me at others. It is not just about becoming one with the instrument, it is about you youself becoming an instrument of the music. The best group I have ever been a part of was a trio and we were friends since our late teens and became very close. By the third year of playing together, we were able to crank out 40 min long improvisations, filled with dynamic changes, time signature shifts, thematic recapitulations, it was ALL there. We became essentially telepathic when we played, and decided tbat we would press record as soon as we sat down and plugged in because it never failed, the first thing we played was always golden and trying to replicate it later was never quite tbe same. I have hours and hours of tbese recordings that sound like finished epic pieces of music. That was the only band I have ever played with that had tbat chemistry. Three guys... Who were friends since their teens... Who played original music together for years... Coincidence? Or is this actually the best formula for that 'next level' phenomenon that Rush have achieved? I am inclined to believe so.

What a great reaction! Hopefully Geddy's solo brings you more happiness than La Villa. lol They are the perfect balance between "serving the song" and serving their own ambitions as players to challenge themselves and become better musicians. Re: studio vs live - the studio versions are generally more recommended for a 1st time listening bc a lot of the nuances of the song get lost in the live versions (crowd noise, etc). Studio version to fully hear and appreciate the composition and the nuances of their musicianship as individuals and as a group. And the lyrics. Live versions for the energy, added improv moments (like Geddy's solo) and their incredibly TIGHT musicianship as a group. It was actually a joy to watch them mess up. NOT bc it made them human, but bc watching them was superhuman. I hope you continue to explore them. They will never cease to surprise you and be a source of inspiration.

Ged picked up the Flamenco plucking from Les Claypool … it changed his approach to the instrument just as Alex came back from Victor refreshed and more aggressive and Neil had displayed his new found timing and chops after Gruber. You will also notice the floating thumb! The latter years of Rush was the MOST proficient version of the band as the individuals had transcended their own virtuosity. The collective experience was just beyond comprehension. So appreciate your honesty and integrity to the music! Blessings and admiration!!!

Geddy plays his bass almost like a Spanish guitar. If you watch close he will strum through strings in both directions. Almost like he's picking but using his fingers as the picks. When he is playing a simple line he plays like most bass players. But when he runs a fast riff he will often strum through the strings with his fingers. Incredible.

Watching and hearing this live video reminds me of their in concert, cavernous, open, sound. This is the closest sound of the live experience that I’ve heard so far. It really captures that actual live sound of the band if that makes any sense. I guess it’s the live sound engineering and the big hall/arena, echo type sound that I’m used to that this captures so well. Especially with a super clean, live band like RUSH. You can really hear the venue acoustics. Now, just do it extremely LOUDLY. Some of the very best concerts.

Rush live are incomparable honestly, the way they make their studio versions, by their own admissions, they literally just come in with ideas, sometimes they'll collaborate in pairs or altogether, but basically they get a "great mix" done, and on some songs in particular, the studio versions are epic... but some, when you hear it live (even a short time later) it's clear they left something on the table due to recording pressures or whatever, and they really find the groove and the missing bits that they then add in live. La Villa Strangiato (LVS) is one of those (I'll have to watch your vid on that one next, this was the first I ran across from you, I see a couple others in the suggestions now)... the album recording was incredible, one thing to note, if you watch the "official video" version of LVS, that is NOT the studio recording, that's a "played live for video" version, which actually has a slightly different vibe than the original studio version (good, but different)... the album version is a bit cleaner yet also darker (especially with headphones at night), you can almost get the creeps listening to it.... Fast forward to the version they play in concert over the years (In particular the "A SHow of Hands" concert version) and it's literally faster, more notes, more intricacy, and yet also more flowing and powerful... and they do all that LIVE. A Rush concert is (was, sadly) an epic experience "Precision Thunder" was how our Dallas newspaper wrote up one of their concerts here back around 1990 (Presto tour)... the studio releases are literally just the starting point, then they make it better on the road. Also, sometimes they just get goofy, like the reggae version (first 2 verses) of "Working Man" that they played on one of their later tours (their original "big break" song that was a hard rocker originally). Anyhow, so the BEST thing to do is both, hear the studio, then the live. THe crazy thing is the live versions are easily "perfectly matched" to the studio releases most of the time, just with "more" somehow in them, but if you memorized the album versions, you could sing right along, and hum right along with any part of it and it'd match the live version, just instead of 1/8th note high-hats on the studio drums, there now are triplets mixed in, the bass has a few extra notes where there weren't before, yet the original notes are all there, and the guitar, well, Alex finds ways to make it make sounds it never did on the album but perfectly (in most cases, LOL) in sync with the original melody (I'd say he makes more mistakes (still very rare though) than the other 2, but he's also a bit more free-wheeling which certainly keeps it interesting! LOL).

This band consists of the most humble of musicians, and they like being goofs and having laughs! To that end, they always like to inject little bits of comedy throughout their shows - the chef loading chickens, a gorrilla coming on to steal popcorn, cartoon videos, both created by their South Park creator buddies and others - and using the fact that Geddy switched from onstage amps to sending his signal through the PA, and wanted to balance the stage since Alex still used his stacks, so they used popcorn makers, chicken rotisseries, and even washing machines!!! World Class musicians, and world class goof offs!
@scottlogsdon56074 ай бұрын
Geddy tells the story that when he stopped using his amps on stage he had a big open space behind him so they left it open to the stage crew to find something to go there. Since the entire band has such a deep sense of humor the crew went with washers, dryers, and food machines. They then included the crew in the show by taking care of the items on stage switching food, doing the laundry, rotating chicken, even offering chicken to Neal in one video making him laugh which you don't often see because he is so intense. The Barbies in front of Alex is his favorite fans and he has a thing for dinosaurs so the crew finds dinosaurs and puts them on his stacks just to maintain the bands deep rooted humor that keeps them such close friends before being an amazing band. As far as school, Alex and Neil have a strong background of jazz lessons. That being said you can hear a lot of jazz in their songs.

Another song from Rush that you may like is Limelight, where Geddy's bassline helps Alex to shine in one of his best solos ever; my favourite live version is from the Exit Stage Left video, but I recommend starting with the studio version so you can understand Neil's lyrics, which are an important component here. Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

I think what you’re taking about with Rush is about serving the song. They’re all indeed master players and one with their instruments. As dazzling as their technical prowess may be, they generally tried to make it about the song and not themselves. There are exceptions to that, and they’re usually intentional and funny. Take La Villa Strangiato, for example. It is subtitled, “An exercise in self indulgence.” Neil Peart once said that when it came to composing drum parts, he had a teacher that said to use the K.I.S.S. model - Keep It Simple, Stupid. Neil chose to make up his own model - M.U.S.I.C - Make Up Something Interesting & Complimentary. Great band and great people.

would have to say the live version but also check out the studio version just to be able to compare the recreation of the song.
