Rush never had a period of "bad" music. All their periods has great, excellent music. They just had different flavors, that's all.

I agree. This era was the first I heard and lived before diving into the way back machine of AFTK / Hemispheres and etc. All eras are great and worthwhile. I even love Presto, so underrated.

Bingo. One of the greatest things about Rush is how they did NOT make "Moving Pictures 2.0". I mean, as great as that album was/is, they could have easily just continued by making another similar album, and so on, and it would have been tough to have faulted them if they had. Instead, they pushed onward and gave us Signals, which then led to GUP, which then led to PW, which then led to HYF, and so on... so much greatness, so much originality, so much variety. One of the funniest/dumbest things I've heard non-Rush fans say is, "all Rush songs sound the same". Yeah, umm, LOL, it's not like they're AC/DC, bwaaaaaaahahahahaha!!

Geddy wanted to simplify his keyboards by 1985 on stage. It ended up getting even more out of control by this tour. Eventually he wanted to play what he loved most - the bass. This era gets a lot of hate but I still love all of those songs from this era. Just a totally different sound and feel to any other of Rush. It also takes me back to a long time ago when I was a lot younger.

I’m a long time stubborn Rush fan and Hold Your Fire is my favorite album followed by Signals. Just adore those two.

I read that in an interview . That he wanted to play more bass on power windows. More aggressively. I think he accomplished that. The keys got out of control though. Not him playing the keys, rather all the pre recorded keys you hear. Totally took over some of those songs from power windows. I do think the sound production was far better than previous albums. Peter Collins really made their sound more spacial. Take a listen to the power window remaster with good headphones.

Rush, as good as they were, were always followers and never innovators. They did prog after yes and others were already doing it. They did 80s synth stuff after so many others already were. Went back to hard rock after nirvana, pearl jam and soundgarden were doing it. They went heavy synth just bc it was popular at the time but older 70s rush fans wanted them to stay in the 70s. For me who didnt become a fan until around 85 when i was 10 years old it was easy for me to like each era. But even i can tell they went too far with the synths and alex’s awesome playing really got pushed to the backburner.

@@secretjourney4815 Wasn't power windows the album where they hired a professional keyboard player for certain parts in the studio too? Whatever they did to produce it, I'm glad they did it the way they did it, because I love the album. He really challenged himself having to pull that off live though, for the entire signals through hold your fire era. He pulled it off pretty reasonably well, that's for sure.

2-11-2021 I am stopping bye here in the middle of practicing my drums playing thru some playlists and lo and behold I had to stop and comment... cant everybody see how incredibly difficult this is written. geddy's keyboard "guitar riffs" and alex's guitar "keyboard phrasing" then going back and forth being covered by guitar then the bass and key pedals...onto the ripping lead guitar then back to keys and etc... ...so so difficult to pull off , and to write in such a way shows just how talented and challenging they were to each other to go out on the road and try to perform this hundreds of times. the pedal work they each perform gets so frequently overlooked with rush but here you have bass pedals while playing keyboard and key pedals while playing bass.. alex has the guitar rhythm pedals with keyboard midi then switches to lead with whammy while hitting pedal keys.. .. friggin a maze of intertwined start to finish performance based writing of instrumentation mastery.... my goodness they still don't get the credit they have so richly earned... no reward for resistance... no assistance.. no applause.. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏RIPNEP

They were one of the most perfect rock groups having no ego and getting along for 40 years. WOW. I love Rush and always will. I can remember having some problems in my life back in the 80's and listening to them on my couch in earphones. They didn't fix my problems, but they sure did make it better! In my earphones and with my eyes closed I was always trying to figure out who was making what sound. Three people making so much music it was just unreal. RIP Neil.

wow, the beginning is not very tight maybe thats why it was cut from the live album and vhs, but this is 1988 technology pushed to the limit, some sampled sequences over there, real time piano on other sections, than finishing with midi pedal sampled sequences......and a great song that had to be played live, hold your fire is just a brilliant masterpiece..... oh and rest in peace mr peter collins, the great producer of that magnificient record

Alright, first let me say that I'm a HUGE RUSH fan. And I know I'll probably get raked over the coals for this,, but this was one of my least favorite RUSH albums. I really liked Lock and Key but this album was OVER SATURATED with keyboards. Yeah, I know, it was that era. But still, I felt it was over done. So when Presto came along I was so glad to see the keyboards cut in half and Alex and his guitar brought back up front where they belong.
