I was 14 years old when this came out. I remember my dearly departed mother buying this for me as I gazed at the cover artwork in K-Mart as they used to have a record section back in those days. I took this work of art home and upon the needle touching down I was mesmerized at the technical proficiency of these three incredible artists! As my dear Canadian mother would say, they are from Canada, of course they are good! I miss her every day! I miss Rush and I miss Neil. They are gone, but the memories can never be erased!

I’ll never forget the first time I saw them. Being a bass player I was planning on watching Geddy the whole time. I ended up watching Neil for the entire 2 hours, literally could not look away. I owned every album to that point and had seen every music video and live VHS they had released; so I figured I had a good grasp on what seeing Rush in person was like. Wrong. Seeing how aggressive he could be at times, seeing those drums moving as he hit them, seeing the cymbals flail about, hearing the drums echo around the amphitheater, not to mention he was also pretty big guy….it was insane. The drum solo was everything I had imagined but what floored me the most was watching him play Animate…can’t really explain why, it was just on another level.

For sure, it might be Rush's greatest song. It's the right blend of all the styles- progressive rock, New Wave. Tight songwriting, tight production, interesting lyrics. Lifeson in particular shines here, his chord progressions. Neil's drumming too is vaguely post-punkey as well? it's just got it all. A complete Rush track.

for so many years we Rush fans had only bootlegs to listen to live Natural Science then suddenly decades later we find all this stuff in the vault
@JohnMorris-ge6hq4 жыл бұрын
True man! We had no proper 1980 live stereo mix of NATURAL SCIENCE but we did have the live version from the 1998 Stages 3 CD set. And the live version from the Snakes And Arrow tour. And I think the newer live versions are better played and sang, which is not the case for LIMELIGHT, SPIRIT OF RADIO or XANADU. But YES, it is nice to have a 1980 live stereo version after 40 fucking years! But these were always around. They were not "lost tapes" LOL LOL. Rush had several shows from the Permanent Waves Tour recorded to 2 inch 24 track. AND many shows from the Moving Pictures tour as well. So for the 40th Anniversary release of Moving Pictures expect a nice 1981 live version of THE CAMERA EYE and VITAL SIGNS. The 1981 live version of VITAL SIGNS was released on a U.K. 12 inch 45. Working in my Uncle's studio for over 18 years. Trust me, these things aren't tossed away. They are marked and shelved. Rush could have released a triple live album back in 1981. For example: SIDE 5 - NATRUAL SCIENCE CYGNUS X-1 - Under 19 minutes. SIDE 6 - CYGNUS X-1 BOOK-2 LIMELIGHT - Around 19 minutes. Under 20 minutes which makes it really easy to cut. Anymore than 22 minutes and it gets harder. Good sounding 25 minute sides have been cut but only the best can do it . At this length you have to start compromising on bass and the top end. And the noise level goes up and the volume of the record goes down.

Best live rendition of this song I’ve ever heard. The rhythm and tempo remains consistent with the studio version from start to finish. In the more recent live renditions, the tempo of Part III (Permanent Waves) is always slowed down a couple beats. I’ve always wondered why Neil was slowing down tempo in Part III when he’s such a perfectionist at his craft. Did he feel a slower tempo was better suited for the song in his later years, or was he just getting older and not so keen on keeping that tempo through the whole song? Thoughts???
@Mr.CliffysWorld4 жыл бұрын
I think he was just in too much pain to do it night after night . Sorry . Man that is such a shame , but if he knew when he wrote 'The Garden' (as many believe) then that was released 2012 so probably written in 2011 almost 9 years is a lifetime with that aggressive type of a cancer . Imagine the first 4 to 5 years, trying to stay positive , trying to keep that "keep fighting, never give up" mentality . Then a couple of years of on the fence, then doubt starts to turn to dread as 5 years go by and your scans show little improvement ... Finally, when the outcome is plain, acceptance . That man went through the wringer the last decade of his life !!!! Makes me feel guilty to be a survivor, Gods Speed , Rest in Peace my friend . You are fondly remembered , greatly missed & much loved . Things will never be the same. I hope the powers that be help guide Geddy & Alex through the pain and tremendous sense of loss they must be feeling . Now you can finally give a few lessons to John Bonham . I've always want to hear Neil play ,Led Zeps ,"Good Times , Bad Times" . I would have gave almost anything to hear that !! A sincere goodbye to the man who wrote the soundtrack of my life. 45-ish years you put words to feelings I couldn't find a way to express . Been a long trip , and no matter what memory comes to mind , high school, college, my friends, my band mates, my girlfriends , my daughter. One thing is certain... It is inevitably always RUSH playing in the background. ✌
