I hear this song, & I go right back to 1/7/2020, when we lost Mr. Pert; my unofficial drum teacher (who never knew he was)---many broken heads on the Gretch kit, dent's on the zildjians, and pissed off neighbors while hopelessly trying to even come close to him...RIP Professor Peart

Been playing guitar since the 1980's. However, drums were always my favorite instrument, largely thanks to the greats that played the instrument (obviously Peart being one of them). The day the Professor died, I ordered an electronic kit. His passing, unfortunate as it was, motivated me to pick up my favorite instrument at the tender age of 58. Thank you, Mr. Peart, for the wonderful music and bringing more joy into my life through my new instrument.

Probably because he blends into what is going on so well. He has no ego or need to stand out. He fills in the role of guitar. He does it with 10x more notes than any other guitarist. But every single solo he gets, long or short, he proves how good he is. Complicated rhythms or fingerings. Fast or slow, powerful and badass or haunting and soleful. His dynamics are unmatched. Most guitarists don't even use dynamics. It's all just one volume. Alex is every bit as good as Neil or Geddy. He just blends so well it doesn't stand out. He plays pedals and sings as well. He's multitasking with the other two. Plus he's the onstage goofball of the group. He plays like he's just chilling at home while he's literally melting a guitar. Always completely relaxed and at ease. He'll even chat with Geddy and they'll laugh in the middle of utter shreds. His talent is amazing.

This whole concert was incredible, Rush at the peak of their powers. 😊 Neil came up with the lyrics after reading a story in Road&Track called A Nice Morning Drive, written by Richard Foster about a future where cars like this are banned. Year's later Foster who was a fan of the band noticed that Neil had credited him in the liner notes as the inspiration to the song, he reached out to him by E-mail and they began a correspondence. While talking they discovered they had a shared interest in motorcycles and in fact rode the same model 1100GS BMW which ultimately ended up with Neil inviting Richard on a ride through the Appalachians to Rush's next concert at the time, in Philadelphia, as a guest of the band. 😊

Neil was an avid car collector. His love for cars & motorcycles, along with music, was part of who he was, and a "Red Barchetta" might have been one he dreamed about owning. In the animated version of "The Spirit of Radio", Neil was even shown driving one. As always, RIP to "The Professor".
@sergiosbloch74087 ай бұрын
Neil didn't have a Red Barchetta - the car is a 1950's Ferrari 166 MM and as a collector car was even out of Neil's reach to aquire one. He did have an amazing collection of cars, but he had confirmed in more than one interview that he didn't own a Ferrari. The car in the story that inspired this song was a green MG - which Neil had owned one at one point also.

The feeling of needing to cry at the mastery happening in front of me, but it being stuck in my throat because I didn't want to miss anything. Rush isn't the only band I have seen more than twice. But they're the only band I saw 14 times. And the 'No, no, please don't be done!' feeling happens every time even after the band's standard 3 hour performance. Every...damn...time! ❤️

In my opinion this is one of their best songs. Not only is it a story song... it is a scifi song that tells a story that could easily be a short film. It follows poetic meter but is prose, EXTREMELY difficult to do in song form. Not only is the story very thematic but the overall structure of the song matches it. The opening builds slowly up as his adrenaline rises. Hopping the train, jumping off outside the border. Getting in the illegal car and racing off. The music kicks in with Alex providing the revving engine on the guitar. And now the music is a high speed, dense, fill on adrenaline fueled assault on the senses. The lyrics are fun. The thrill, the artistry of a beautiful car. The police arrive and he gets away. And as the music calms, it still has echoes of the music from the chase... reliving the day's adventure as he sits and drinks with his uncle. This song is a masterclass in structure and storytelling bith with words and the music and RUSH are utter masters of this. Glad you've gotten in to Geddy's voice. People either love it or they hate Rush because of it lol. But it somehow fits so perfectly. It would be as good if his voice were more typical. As he got older he couldn't do the higher registers any more so he would drop down more. Works just as well. He saved a high note for very special moments.

That ending after he says "at the fireside", I could listen to that all day. It's just a beautiful piece of music that showcases three interactive musical geniuses. Rush has been my favorite band since 1981 when they came out with this album and video. I even played this video in my high school History class of all things. I had an advanced English teacher who voiced his appreciation of Neil Peart's lyrics. Much of Peart's writings are inspired by literary works. My dad is a musician and when I showed him some of the songs, he said "they're slightly advanced." One thing is for sure, this music is not improvised. They talked about it long before they started hashing out their parts. The "Dinner with Rush" video shows how they start the concept.

The previous four songs in reverse order: The Spirit of Radio, Xanadu, The Trees and YYZ w/ his drum solo = Neil's endurance is off the charts; he's sweating & exhausted, and plays on. He still has Closer to the Heart, Tom Sawyer, Vital Signs, Natural Science, a medley including By Tor & the Snow Dog, and the encore of La Villa Strangiatto.
