I grew up in those exact same suburbs 50+ years ago. Couldn't wait to escape. This song always brings me to tears. At 18, I finally left those suburbs and went on to travel the entire world extensively. This song "Subdivisions' still hits me like a ton of bricks. It literally gave me the confidence I was lacking to venture forth, and transcend my tiny little world perspective. A great song that is heard within the right moment, has the power to change a life completely.

I saw the Signals Tour concert in 1983 Las Cruces Pan AM center and it was such an amazing show! I love this era of Rush- I was 18 also and moved away shortly afterward. I love every tack on this Album, "Losing It" is such a deep track and also speaks about being a artist and aging- losing the inspiration and energy of youth. Art assisting with change is a very good thing

This song is called subdivisions, Neil being the clever lyricist and a good player on words in drumming there is the concept of subdivisions, subdivisions are created by further dividing the quarter note pulse. In 4/4 time, if all four quarter notes are divided by two we now have eight notes per bar, and sixteen et al… Now go back and listen to some of the rhythmic breakdowns… Awesome, RIP Neil Peart and long live the mighty Rush! 👊🏻
@michaelkeller62234 ай бұрын
I think one of the messages that a lot of people don’t perceive with an initial listen, is when Neil talks about the cyclical nature of how kids want to move out of the suburbs into the city with the excitement of the neon lights, get caught in ticking traps with their jobs and then start to long for the peace and serenity of the suburbs as they age starting the cycle over again. It almost sub divides stages in your life, which would be a third definition of subdivisions on top of a description of the suburbs, and the way that people are subdivided into groups and clicks in high school brilliant!😅
@jimsteele40174 ай бұрын
The whole album is about the cycle. Kid is born in the Subdivisions. The Analog Kid grows up on the edge of his civilization, and dreams about the big city. He meets people and has some Chemistry (or not) with them. Eventually he matures into the city. The Digital Man learns that words can be a Weapon...becoming somewhat of a New World Man in the process. But eventually, time takes over and he's Losing It. Thus begins the Countdown to leaving this world....
@williamgrice47904 ай бұрын
Crazy that the lyrics talk about growing up, being cast out if you aren't "cool", moving to the big city, finding your place in society, then realizing you want the quiet life again and where do you go? back to the subdivided places that you grew up in. Full circle. Neil was so ahead of everyone in thinking and lyrical poetry. And to have Geddy be able to phrase the lyrics to be able to sing them, even more masterful. Alex just gets to be Alex and play music with a few "quirks" thrown in.

Geddy's vocal is its absolute best in the 80's !!!! Not screechy nor forced and over reaching like the 2000's where he kinda sounds like grandpa Simpson. That is the reason why I start my girlfriends on the 80's stuff.... More digestible for newcomers !!!!!🤣🤣🤣

That is so true also to me! 😅 I reckon his voice sounds best on 'Grace Under Pressure' and 'Power Windows', which also had been my very first Rush impression, getting me hooked on them right away (in '89) 😊 It was quite a drastic difference to me to listen to 'All The World's A Stage' after those two albums plus 'Signals' and 'Moving Pictures'! Especially because of Geddy's much higher-pitched voice, and it took me a while to get used to. And while I do appreciate ANY Rush, their 70's releases before 'Permanent Waves' are not getting played as often as the ones from thereon 😅

Back in the eighties, Rush fans weren't necessarily considered the coolest kids on the block. Not the way we are now 😂. Seriously though, I was a junior in high school when this song came out. It so perfectly describes what it was like for us, growing up in those times, and the burden of trying to find a place where you fit in. Someplace where you were accepted. With songs like this, Rush let us know that we mattered. That's where the intense, lifelong love and loyalty for them stems from.

Geddy had started to sing in a lower register when they recorded shorter more radio friendly music. He explained that initially he felt the need to try and cut through the loudness of the music so he made use of his upper register vocals. At the end of the day he has a very strong voice and great tone so even though his higher register prevented some from tuning Rush out once he lowered his register more listeners came back around to his voice.

Okay, Red. San Diego's resident Rushoholic here. You mentioned how Subdivisions is an older song/video. It opens the 9th Rush studio album SIGNALS released in September, 1982. So, this official video as well as the song are about 42 years old. SIGNALS was the last Rush album coproduced with Terry Brown. He helped Rush on their 2 concert albums as well as the other 8 studio albums to this point. Brown is sometimes called the 4th member of Rush. The sound starts to shift during the following 10 years with increased emphasis on keyboards. It's clear from the start of Subdivisions where things moved toward. Geddy brings out the square wave synthesizer as a kind of rhythm instrument. Geddy solos on the keys before Alex follows on his solo. Both of these are clinics in placement of note bending. You see it with Geddy's left hand turning the dial on the far left side. Alex's solo shows a lot of nuanced string bending with his left hand and a lot of unlocking and relocking of the tremolo (sometimes called a whammy bar) with his right. He's also tapping the strings. Did I hear you call them babies? Neil was 30 or so in this. By the way, Alex turns 71 this Tuesday, 8/27. You stay classy, Red..

I think this peerless, gleaming gem is a perfect song/video, both musically & lyrically, and is easily one of my all time favorite songs from anyone(.) For me, with any of my favorite progressive/metal music artists, and especially, RUSH, it’s best to first hear the original album versions of their songs as they intended from the beginning at the time, and then be prepared to just get blown away by how they actually pull it all off in their live performances! To me, Lee, Lifeson, & Peart are/were the consummate musical geniuses & virtuosos & professionals in their craft! As someone that was being “subdivided” in “high school halls” & in “basement bars” during this time period in my life this song spoke to me like nothing else I had heard or felt before, and it still tears-up this crusty, old, curmudgeon! Thank you “Red” for sharing your RUSH experience with us & keep them coming! 🤘🏼❤️🔥

I 100% agree with Geddy's voice comment. Any live performance you'll watch after 2000 you'll notice Geddy struggling to sing older songs. For so long he pushed his voice to the max and sometimes out of his range, imagine how many shows he must have done. It pains me to see him struggle, I hate the more recent live footage for that. Geddy's voice is a big part of the _acquired taste_ I often mention.

He was great in the time machine tour. By 2014, he sounded different. IDK if it was struggling or trying a new approach. If it's the latter, it didn't work for me. After the end, Alex talked about how he and Geddy wanted to keep going and that Ged still felt good about his voice.

I have come to the conclusion that some of Neil peart's most inspired drumming is on this album. Yes it's a transitional period for the band and they were finding their sound among all the influx of synthesizers and whatnot and a lot of the material is not as overtly showy as the super Progressive stuff from the late 70s..... however the refinement and the Precision that Neil put into these drum Parts is truly astonishing

Thanks for reacting to the music video that made me a Rush fan just a few months ago! I suppose I like this version best for that reason but also the energy you described. As for Geddy's voice, I still enjoyed it in later years, and I absolutely love live performances and 99 percent of the time, prefer watching reactions to live performances. The only two songs by Rush that I prefer the music video/audio are: 'Subdivisions' and 'The Camera Eye', just because Geddy's vocals are so compelling in the original recordings. That said, I feel like Geddy had a fairly long period of good to great vocals: From around 1981-82 all the way to at least 2000 (with the release of his solo album that year). To me, the '80s vocals are the best overall, including live performances. I can't remember if you reacted to 'Mission' yet, but I suggest checking out the live version from 1988 in Birmingham. Everything about it is perfect, in my opinion.

Parents and teachers telling us what we should do, be, or think in our lives...while we just wanted to enjoy our youth. People noted on the Signals album that Geddy changed his singing tone considerably from previous albums (you sort of start to hear it on Moving Pictures, but even between the two albums the difference is pronounced). I don't know if I have A favourite Rush song but this one is close, because Rush were contemporaries and I grew up in the same subdivision as Alex and Geddy did (different high schools though). Such a great song. 🔥 I didn't discover them until the late eighties and I must admit it took me a while to get used to his voice

Same here! I'd read _about_ them already in '84 but heard their actual music for the first time only in '89 - but then got hooked to them instantly, too! 😄 (via a friend lending me his 'Grace Under Pressure' LP to check out 😊)

@@mightyV444 Nice. Borrowing friends albums and tapes or taping albums for each other to check out was such a great part of that time wasn't it. A Show of Hands was the one I got. Remember those CD club magazines where you used to join and would get one magazine sent to you each month and had to order at least one CD from it. I'd heard the name Rush but never heard any of their songs. So I took a chance on them. Time Stands Still, this one, Red Sector A and Closer To The Heart were my immediate favourites. I discovered a few bands from other countries that way in the eighties. Midnight Oil was another.

@@mattmid7012 - Very cool! 😀👍 And 'A Show Of Hands' is a great introduction to Rush, too! 😍 My Sister brought the VHS version home one night from the video store she was working for then ('89), which she had to repeat for me many times, until the tape was pretty worn out in the end 😅 Another one of my friends had been subscribed to a mail-order record store as you described, only that it was still all vinyl at that time; He received several dubious pressings, like a Colombian one of The Police's 'Zenyatta Mondatta' with a couple of songs missing 😅 Oh yes! Midnight Oil are great also! 😍👍 Their '85 'Oils On Water' concert is one of my favourite live shows on YT! 😊

@@mightyV444 Haha, that was very handy! Bet the store wondered why the tape didn't last long 😂 Dodgy Colombian bootlegs. 😂 That 'Oils on the Water' concert is just fantastic. Have you seen the Stand In Line reaction on here? It was my request. 😁

@@mattmid7012 - I just checked, and it turns out I had actually watched her 'Stand In Line' video at the time, 10 months or so ago, and I'd also left comments - but I'd forgotten all about that meanwhile! 😳 I must be getting old! 😅 Great to watch it again, though! 😉👍 Would be cool if she listened to some _more_ of Midnight Oil's stuff some time! She obviously had genuinely enjoyed her first taste of that great band! 😊

I feel about this song because I was considered myself as an outcast in high school thru all my 4 years there. I didn't fit in all the cliques of my classmates. So, I went to work after school to be busy. But don't get me wrong, I am friends with some of them. Many years later at class reunions, I don't feel as an outcast anymore! I believe if I am correct that Neil Peart was an outcast (introvert) during his time at school because I read that he keeps to himself prior and after each concert. Neil travels alone on the road. I know that Neil is close to his bandmates even though he is a loner. Neil wrote this song about his experiences.

I believe that in order to truly appreciate this song, you would have to listen to the entire album all the way through. There is a theme or multiple themes that connect them. The depth of the writing on this album is beyond compare.

Not surprising that some people are attached to the original studio version of Subdivisions; after all, the whole song is about nostalgia. Love how when the lyrics talk about "get caught in ticking traps", Neil's drums mimic seconds ticking away. Consciously or otherwise, this song is autobiographical for me. My teenage/early adult years were all about getting out of the suburb I lived in. Now that I'm nearly 60, I've moved back to within a km of the house where I first saw this video on MuchMusic.

Interesting take on Geddy's voice changing. Those of us that got turned on to Rush from back at the in the beginning were tuned in to Geddy's voice.

If this doesn't bring you back to High School nothing will. Unless you went to a very small school. RIP Neil😇

Yes you have to listen to the album song first.....before loving the different eras of live versions. But the thing about singers their instrument ages so much quicker (eg Steve Perry) and can be lost ....than the dexterity of guitar and drummers may last much longer. So Geddys voice did get lower as he had to adjust the tones in their songs.. like all aging singers
