One of my favorite guitar solos. Alex can say so much with so little.

I agree! But it definitely isn't "little", his solos are always filled with tons of stuff you might not even notice! They're full and big

@@maximilianodelrio Your absolutely correct. I'm just pointing to the fact that he's so good he can make an awesome solo without it being littered with notes. He has a certain angst and intelligence to his compositions. My favorite guitarist since '88.

When I was in college, and lived in a dorm, down the hall from my room there was kid who, every morning, and i MEAN EVERY MORNING, as soon as quiet hours was over would blast MLK's "I have a dream" speech. I get it. Its a great speech from a great man and very inspirational but after a month of this, EVERY MORNING we all had about enough of it. So one morning, I got ready, door open, volume turned up, and Big Money on pause. As soon has his started that speech, I hit the play button and out came that massive opening power chord to The Big Money and I blew that speech away!!

1985.... the album dropped right in the middle of the decade. It is probably one of my favorite albums of all times, the ones just before and just after this are equally impressive as well. They absolutely NAIL the sound better than any of the "popular" bands back then did!

This song is extra good live on A Show of Hands album and video. Rush aimed to combine the strongest aspects of the previous two albums and totally realized them for Power Windows, one of the finest recordings they ever made. Don't overlook "Middletown Dreams" and "Mystic Rhythms" on the second half because they are awesome!

When I saw them in 1996, they had speakers hanging from the ceiling in the rear of the stadium - essentially 4-channel house PA. In the intro of this song Alex’s big guitar chords came in the front and Geddy’s keyboards responded from the rear. Different parts of Neil’s kit were sent to the rear speakers too, especially some of the electronic triggers. The sound just whirled around you. Mind-blown, best live band I’ve ever seen. Cheers!

As too-cool teen younguns' my friends and I weren't sure what to make of Power Windows at first, after their previous heavier rock sound. In retrospect we quickly realized it's a fantastic album that merges their heavy sound with the 80's new wave (especially the Police) so well. That instrumental section is one of their best 🙂

The song describes it more as a mixed curse. Good things have happened from the movers and shakers with the big bucks... but many horrible things have happened because of them as well. True, money has no soul - it's a tool, sable for good and I'll. When it is used without conscience, though (think "Nothing personal, it's just business."), that is when the problems crop up.

At the time, Rush saw the massive creative and popular success that Yes, Genesis, and The Police had in reinventing their sound for the 80s with synthesizers, and decided they wanted some of that too. I believe Power Windows was Rush's attempt at their own 90125.

Rush is always amazing. Geddy driving that amazing bass line behind Alex's guitar and Neils drumming like a madman. To answer your question about their music not being in 80's movies; Rush was not widely accepted back then. There were some people like me that were Rush fanatics, and then there were Van Halen fans. Rush had their dedicated fans, and they were all over the radio, but they were widely panned by the critics, which I never understood. I suppose they truly were ahead of their time. Which makes me sad, although I know the boys didn't care. They just loved playing music.

I call this era "New Wave" Rush in the mid-80's. I listened to Rush from their rock phase to this album and beyond. Geddy said "New Wave" Rush started with Signals album when Alex got his "Duran Duran" haircut and his skinny tie. Also, Neil cut his hair short and sported a "rat tail". You can see all of this in the official music video for this song. Not hatin', just pointing the humor of their style change.

The thing about air drumming along with Neil Peart is that it requires both a knowledge if how to actually play them and a knowledge of the music because of the multiple time and meter changes. He, as Taylor Hawkins said at their R&RHOF induction, brought the drums up front and made them a lead instrument "where they fuckin' belong". I've been an in depth student of all things Rush since about 1981 just about 4 years before this album. Take the time and learn the albums in order and you can hear them learn and improve and you can also hear the different producers across their span. In 5000 years, all humans will know of this eras music is the song LA Villa Strangiato, because it is perfect in it's original form. 9+ minute instrumental tour de force and a goddamned masterpiece of our species. Music cannot get better.

First of all, the song was written in 1985. Cannot get more in the 1980s than that. And the reason it and many other RUSH songs were not in 1980's movies is because RUSH was NEVER a mainstream band, and they were NEVER understood by mainstream listeners and Movie goers are typically Mainstream people... so they expect that pop-mainstream-music in movies. RUSH would NEVER fit in. Only 30 years later when the movie "I love you Man" came out, a time when RUSH's popularity grew into the Mainstream did you see RUSH in movies.

The reason Rush music wasn't used in movies until basically the 2010s is because they were frowned upon by the mainstream music industry up until the last decade or so. All of the mainstream establishment and publications wrote them off as pretentious and nerdy. Jealous much? 😂
