I find it interesting that so many younger reactors find Geddy's voice pleasant and agreeable. I can remember late 70s and early 80s when a lot of my friends loved the*music* of Rush but really drew the line at Geddy's *voice* and just couldn't get past it. I can kind of see that in the first 2-3 albums but throughout the second half of the 70s, he really grew into his voice and by Moving Pictures, I thought it was just fine.
@DeaconBlues117 Жыл бұрын
It's the clarity of the voice for me - high or low, you could always tell exactly what he was singing, which was important when dealing with lyrics as dense as Neil's.

I once worked at a liquor store in Indy. A guy came in to buy bottles for the party after the Rush show at Deer Creek that night. After he chose six bottles of wine and scotch ($1600) for Neil and Geddy, he gave me six free tickets. I got permission to leave work and caught the 2nd set. If the crush of people down front hadn't been so bad, we would have been able to sit in the awesome row 6 center seats the tickets were for. Before I left work, I waited on someone and told them this story. He said his best friend was a super fan who couldn't afford tix. I gave him two, and he booked out the door at the speed of light. The show had already started.

I'm glad you mentioned the time changes as few notice them in this song compared to others. Neil Peart (drummer, lyrisist) is conciddered one of the top 2 drummers of all time by many drummers (look up his 9 min drum solo Live in Germany) to see why. Then the greatnes that is Geddy Lee (lead singer, bassist, keybordist), I'm sure he is or should be consifered one of the best bass players of all time. Then there is his amazing voice. Alex Lifeson (guitarist) could be the lead guitar player for any band. All 3 members easly rate to be in the top 10 ever in their talents if not higher. To see more time changes and versatility seach out the "official animated" version of the song on youtube of their song "Spirit of the radio".

Yeah Neil Peart aka "The Professor" RIP, check out a 2004 drum solo from Germany and you'll see why he's your favorite drummers favorite drummer, there is no equal and he wrote the lyrics to most of their songs, like this one, Alex Lifeson is a great guitarist and Geddy Lee is just so unique and he plays bass and keyboards, sometimes both at once via a special foot pedal, you'll get plenty of suggestions what to listen to but a short list would be "Limelight" "Subdivisions" "Free Will" "Closer to the Heart" "2112" (Overture) and maybe the greatest song ever "The Spirit of Radio"

As great as the musicians of Rush were technically, it bears repeating that they only recorded their own music; they composed it, making sure that each of their instruments were featured, and that it all fit. There were other bands with tremendous musicians who were technically gifted (Emerson Lake & Palmer leaps immediately to mind) and whose music, though good and technically challenging, was not nearly so well integrated and cohesive as that of Rush. And you can say that even though Rush threw in more meter changes than almost any other band (save perhaps early Genesis and Yes), leaping from 4/4, to 7/4, to 6/8, to 5/4, and back. Sure, they were virtuoso musicians, but what great composers they were!

Best Live Performance OF ALL TIME RUSH - Xanadu - Live In Montreal 1981 (2021 HD Remaster 60fps) Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, foot pedal synthesizer, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells. Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJPcm32hg8ShjLs

Check out Neil Peart's drum solo "Live in Frankfurt", I read recently where Neil didn't like them recording it that night as he claimed to "be off a little", Neil had a self imposed level of playing that he insisted on for the fans and retired on top of his game.
