Fun facts: YYZ is the call letters for the Toronto Airport (YYZ). And, the intro to the song is "YYZ" in Morse Code.

Alex is my all time favorite guitarist. I gave up playing guitar and realized that I was skilled elsewhere at a Permanent waves concert at the Forum in Los Angeles. From the 3rd row floor standing on my chair I was treated to the show of a Lifeson. Alex has been underrated. I'm so blessed to have witnessed his dedication and disciple to his craft at many venues and enjoy his recordings daily . I always get a Rush when Rush is played on the Radio....knowing how many followers are listening and replaying live concert scenes in thier memories . ..THE ENERGY IS CONTAGIOUS.

Came here after listening to Geddy's Bass Track. Still can't believe how awesome this song is. I've been listening to it since 1981, so were talking 36 years, but I still love to hear it. Now time to search for Neil's isolated drum track. By the way, the person who gave this a dislike doesn't have any hands.

While I think the reason Alex is kind of overlooked by the casual listener is because some of his parts aren't quite as "busy" as Neil or Geddy, but I think that is EXACTLY why Rush worked the way it did. Alex was the constant that played his role in Rush PERFECTLY and let Geddy's ideas flow around his parts. Hes the absolute core of what gives Rush its beautifully melodic feel while letting the others' ideas absoluely shine. And oh, his absolutely ingenius solos that are simply ethereal. Just absolutely a sadly overlooked member by the casual listener. And that's not to say that his parts aren't complicated by any means, cause some of them are incredibly difficult, but just listen to Geddy's part vs Alex's in the call and response solos between Geddy and Neil. When Alex is playing, he keeps the listener aware of where they are in the song, while Geddy plays several different rhythmic patterns in the background, creating like I said, this beautiful yet complicated and interesting feel to the whole band. We will tragically never get another band quite like Rush, but I hope that future musicians could somehow find a way to somewhat capture their otherworldly formula and make it their own 🥰

Exactly right. Someone had to hold it down and allow the others to shine. Alex had to really serve the whole in order to keep things together. Outstanding musician and guitarist.

Songwriting credits are a weird fickle thing. This song is credited to Lee/Peart, but the guitar parts that only Lifeson could have done--those alone should have earned a songwriting credit. Geddy talks about this in his book, basically saying like even if theoretically all Gilmour contributed to Comfortably Numb was the solo, that alone is so integral to the song it deserves an author's credit, but it doesn't work that way.

It actually is sloppy, but I think it sounds better like this. Wouldn't have the same effect if it was perfectly clean.
@whipchorus37264 жыл бұрын
I wonder if going into that initial main riff at 00:47 was supposed to be intentionally sloppy; almost (00:47 through 1:15) uniformly so? It’s noticeably “tidier” when they go back into it later on.
@maximilianodelrio3 жыл бұрын
@@whipchorus3726 i think its meant to be like that, that part is pretty fast and it probably wouldn’t sound as good if it were tighter. Also Alex’s style when he plays fast tends to be more sloppy/chaotic such as in Freewill, but it works perfectly
